Terrible book. I purchased this for entertaining ideas. Instead it's simply an advertisement for their properties. The title should be changed. It doesn't describe the art of entertaining at all. Sorry I purchased this book.

I am a flower designer and this book refers to flowers as an important feature, which is not. Very disappointed in this way.

$300 less than buying this textbook at the campus bookstore. (Priced $300-360) The cover is exactly as pictured, white cover, yellow text bubble, med students on the front. It made me nervous considering the lab manuals, etc, I've seen, have a blue cover but it is exactly as needed for class. This is an international version of Hole's Anatomy and Physiology 14th Edition, it's just paperback. Access code and lab book are separate.

I got this for my Anatomy Physiology class and it saved me about $150. The rental price was more than what I paid to own it. The text and the diagrams were exactly the same as the instructor was using for every single lecture. I only had one dependency the entire semester on one of the "Clinical Application" sections, but it was insignificant as the instructor knew some of the 210 students in the class were using older versions of the text anyway and didn't care because 99.9% of the material was exactly the same. If you are a Pre-med, nursing, dental, what ever... do yourself a favor and this is the textbook you are required for class, get it. Don't be scared. It's the same book with a different cover. In fact, it's a softcover, so it weighs less than the hardcover version.

The book is great. It is a nicely organized and written introduction to anatomy and physiology. It is very informative, which also makes it very useful for a review if you had already taken A&P course but it’s been while.There are also tools that come with the book to help with studying such as LearnSmart or Connect that are very good for practice. They include quizzes, crossword puzzles, animation videos etc. However access to those can be a bit expensive depending on which membership you choose. The price range is between $50-100 (That’s in addition to the cost of the book).You can also purchase SmartLearn or Connect separately by itself which comes with the electronic version of the book too.

This is a great anatomy book that I bought to use for a required anatomy and physiology class for nursing school. It is very informative and I received an A in the class I took so it must've helped. I'm still continuing on with my nursing education and I've used this book for other classes and for clinical homework. The only thing I didn't like about this particular edition I bought is that it wasn't bound - looseleaf with three hole punch so I had to put it into a binder for safe keeping. Im wishing I would've gotten the hard bound book, they're a little more expensive but well worth it if you plan on using this book for awhile. Some of the pages have ripped.

There was a little wear on the book and some of the pages were creased, wrinkled, and a few pages were slightly torn at the bottom, but it does not effect the ability to read the material in the book in anyway. Over all I'm satisfied with this product and would purchase from this seller again.

I have found this text book to be very informative. The information is easy to read and comprehend and is aided by many pictures, diagrams and tables. Every chapter is well organized and broken down into sub-sections. The end of each chapter has a well thought out chapter summary that makes for a great review of the material. The drawings are detailed and nicely labeled and it also provides real life cadaver photos so it's not just full of the cartoon-ish diagrams. Also, the publisher's web site has videos, flash cards, memory games, practice quizzes etc.I ordered this used from an Amazon seller and was very happy with the quick shipping, low cost and good product description.

The paperback international version is identical to the US hardback version. I was worried it wouldn't be quite the same, but it was! And it saved me a ton of money. Other students in class are envious. Never buy textbooks from the college bookstore if you can help it!

This book flows nicely. It gets straight to the point without being overly wordy. Anatomy is not the easiest subject for me, but this book does a good job of explaining the human body and it's functions very clearly and concisely. The diagrams are plentiful and clearly show all viscera, muscles and bones. These authors make use of drawings and cadavers. You really begin to understand the workings of the body systems and exact locations of all bones, muscles and cavities from posterior, anterior, lateral, and ipsilateral views....absolutely every angle and region is covered. A good amount of pathology is included within this book.

Cheryl Kolander is the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the College of Education and Human Development, University of Louisville. She directs the Center for Health Promotion and Prevention Science Research, a center for collaborative studies and advocacy related to prevention science. She is a member of the performance team for UofL collegiate athletics, serves on the advisory board for Get Healthy Now and chairs the curriculum committee for Fit4Me, an after school program for at risk girls.

I needed this book for my women's health class. It was a required text. It serves its function but the formatting of the pages is absolutely awful. Very bland, colorless(it's all in black and blue), and was composed of big blocks of text. It makes it very hard to hold any interest in what one is reading. If you need it for a class, there's not much of a choice for you. But if you're looking at this book just because you're interested in learning about women's health, get a different book. I've included a picture of what the average page looks like.

This book is awful! It was required for my women's health class and I honestly just couldn't believe the outright bias present in a lot of the topics. I feel that health books should be based on research, scientific fact and should avoid bias and opinion but this book falls terribly short.

The book itself and it's material is just fine. I am using it for a class BUT the book I physically received is falling apart and looks rough. At least I saved money by renting instead of buying another book that I will never open again after a class.

TONS of grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors in this book - to the point where some information is skewed because the phrasing is contradictory, or there is missing punctuation.

I have this book for a Women's Health class, and I find it terribly outdated and biased, every chapter. (In fairness, there are some good points too, just overwhelmed by the bad, and annoyed by every chapter.) Biggest complaint, they did a really poor, halfway attempt at the last edit, missed very important topics. For example, last text revision was in 2014, yet they still quote DSM-IV (DSM-5 came out in 2013, with big changes); the Affordable Care Act is listed on p. 57 (ch. 2, becoming a wise consumer), yet subsequent, and more pertinent, chapters/sections don't reflect implementation and resulting changes of the ACA (e.g. access to insurance, more people insured, less quality of insurance, penalties, etc--real life pros and cons); legality of same sex marriage and implications missing (e.g. shared benefits often available through employment), but get a little pass because that was nationally legalized in 2015; and even statistics are outdated and biased (last I checked, "same-sex abuse" still fits under physical, emotional, sexual abuse, etc--offensive to segregate that). Text was obviously written by a biased demographic of authors (I'm a white woman, and I could tell right away the authors were, too -- some of their slants are flat out ignorant). Chapter 2 was outright insulting, even listing a sample of how to write and mail a complaint letter (p. 55). It's the electronic age, there are more "normal" means of doing things, like going online and filling out a standard complaint form. We're not "meek" members of society that can't do anything without really explicit instructions (as the tone of this chap. was). If they revised this book properly, it could be a good text. Text has a "poor-me" feel a lot, when it should have a tone of equality and strength. If your class requires this text, talk to your professor about using something more currently written, with current cultural updates!

I needed this textbook for class, but I would definitely go back and purchase it again for personal use! This book is a great staple if you want to enhance any area of your life. There's chapters on stress, societal views on women's bodies, sexual wellness, mental health, financial independence, etc! Great book!

This book could address issues related to women's health in a clearer, more concise way. I found that the text was unnecessarily wordy. While the issues were comprehensive, I found that reading this book I skimmed through the issues.

Super good for price, lil wear and tear but it came with all the important stuff highlighted:))

This book merely takes you through the motions without explaining what you're doing and why. After Effects is a very robust and complicated platform. It requires far more than this book and video tape attempts to provide. I quit at about Chapter 5 as I was starting to feel like a programmed robot listening to the instructor say, "Click on this switch and type 117, then go over to effects and add this effect...Voila!" After finishing each new exercise, it's highly unlikely that you will know what you did to create the video you created. And even if you did, there's a very good chance you won't remember all that was thrown at you. There are no chapter summaries or a glossary of all the effects which would have been extremely helpful. You're better off going to Lynda.com or Udemy if you're serious about learning After Effects.

I hate this book. The author skips over vital details in the chapters, such as 'select layer 1'. Rather he assumes he's covered everything and congratulates the reader for doing a good job at the end of the chapter, while the reader is looking at swirls of garbage and frustration on the screen. This book obviously had no quality control, and this book is careless in instructing the reader.Instead of going back to ensure that he covered all of the details, he inserts little articles of 'Photoshop experts' who given details on non-critical aspects.To use an analogy, consider that you have been given driving instructions to someone's house for a birthday party. You are told to drive North to Street A, then drive West to Street B, then drive North again to Street C, then turn right and the house is the third on the left, with balloons and streamers.To continue the analogy, this book goes into detail about driving North to Street A, BUT it forgets to tell you to drive west to Street B; instead it tells you that you are doing fine and drive to North again to reach Street C. Then you are lost! They forgot to tell you that you had to travel West, so you didn't end up at the birthday party. Instead you ended up on a shady street where crack dealers hijacked your car and insulted your mother.This book is the basis for the course I am currently taking. Had I would have known the poor quality of this book, I would not have taken this class, and I would not have tried to learn Photoshop.

The Classroom in a Book Series excels at mixing in advanced tips even in the most basic lessons and this book is no exception.With a program as big and deep at Photoshop, this book does not attempt to cover every feature, command, filter and technique, but instead covers overall concepts, plus hits on multiple ways to accomplish common tasks and highlights new features. I am an experienced Photoshop user, worked on the creative side of ad agencies for the past 10+ years and use this book as an instructor for a 300 level course at a University. I taught for two years using the earlier edition Adobe Photoshop CS6 Classroom in a Book and noted a significant number of changes, mostly improvements, in the new Creative Cloud 2014 edition of the book. You learn many of the same things as in previous editions, the only real new skills are related to new features of Photoshop but more importantly the lessons themselves are improved. In this new edition it feels like you are not just moving pixels around but making improvements to the photos and layouts. The first four chapters should probably be completed in order, but after that you can start to pick and choose the topics that look most interesting to you. Most lessons clock in right at an hour, which is ideal for a classroom setting, and shorter than the often 90 minute lessons from before. If you like the old fashioned physical DVD with the tutorial files you may want to grab the CS6 or older version of the book, the CC editions of the book require that you create an online account to download the lesson files.CHAPTER 1You learn a good collection of techniques from selections, to basic color correction and adding shapes & text to create a birthday card. The tutorial leaves you feeling like you accomplished something, more so than the Chapter 1 from the CS6 version of the book.CHAPTER 2This lesson highlights the photo correction tools that have made Photoshop famous. A must read, my students left the chapter excited by the opportunities that had been opened. In previous editions, the lesson had the reader change a photo using several of the same tools, but the before and after in this lesson feels more dramatic.CHAPTER 3A very good overview of the multitude of selection tools available in Photoshop. Seasoned professionals are likely to learn at least one thing new.CHAPTER 4The reader builds a postcard/poster by combining several photos while learning about layers, blending modes, gradients and drop shadows. This chapter is one of the few that is virtually unchanged from the CS6 edition of the book.CHAPTER 5Titled "Quick Fixes", chapter five is made up of 7 mini-lessons, this chapter covers a lot of the "How do I..." questions that a new photoshop user might ask, such as how to remove red eye, create a panorama, blur the background, or remove a duck from a photo. This chapter replaces "Correcting and Enhancing Digital Photographs" from previous editions. Some of the techniques from the old chapter 5 that aren't covered in thew new chapter 5 are now covered in chapter 12.CHAPTER 6More advanced features such as using masks and puppet warp. I found this a good chapter to send students down who may already know the basics, while skipping it for the class as a whole.CHAPTER 7This chapter covers typography tools, including ones you'll rarely use.CHAPTER 8The reader will learn a little about the bezier tool in this chapter but there is a little bit too much hand holding. The lesson never really pushes the learner to try the bezier tool on their own without a paint-by-numbers guide. This is one of the few chapters that will take more than an hour.CHAPTER 9The chapter on advanced compositing is fun, slightly cheesy and is well timed in teaching during the fall semester as it has a Halloween theme.CHAPTERS 10-15Dive in to niche uses of Photoshop that are rarely used by most professionals, and not really enough information to become proficient in any of those uses.All in all, Adobe Photoshop CC Classroom in a Book lives up to the strong reputation of the Classroom in a Book series. This was my first "Classsroom in a Book" experience, and I can assure you that this was an amazingly well-led and instructive book to learn with! Because it comes with the PeachPit lessons, you can work through every project using their downloadable lesson content, and really learn much better than just reading something.Every detail is covered so you are never lost without knowing which step to take next, which I have found to be an issue with online or YouTube tutorials that assume even beginners know all of the basics. I enjoyed that every little step, no matter how trivial is detailed with photos and instructions. The book has very little reading and lots of photos/ graphic demonstrations instead, yay! Basically you have a paragraph or two explaining what you are about to do and why, then lots of photos showing you what your screen should look like and the steps to take. Each time you need to complete a step, it repeats how to do it so you don't have to look back through the book to remember how something is done. It also shows you multiple ways to do different steps (short cuts, long version, etc.) so you can choose your favorite way.My only complaint is that there are several steps/ options which belong to a different/older version than my updated CC subscription, which left me somewhat frustrated and having to Google a few times to resolve. But, I was able to find everything I needed to work through these few exceptions by just Googling online.

About the Author

Don Koks studied at the University of Auckland in the 1980s, where he was awarded a Bachelor of Science in pure and applied mathematics and physics, and a Master of Science in physics, with a thesis in applied accelerator physics for trace-element analysis.  He was awarded a doctorate in mathematical physics by Adelaide University in 1997, with a thesis describing the use of quantum statistical methods to analyse decoherence, entropy, and thermal radiance in both the early universe and black hole theory.  He has spent a summer working on the accelerator mass spectrometry programme at the Australian National University in Canberra, and has worked in commercial Internet development in Auckland. Currently he is a Research Scientist at the Defence Science and Technology Group in Adelaide, specialising in relativistic precision timing, satellite orbital prediction, 6-degree-of-freedom orientation concepts, and radar signal processing.  He is the author of the book Explorations in Mathematical Physics: the Concepts Behind an Elegant Language (Springer, 2006).

This is an interesting read on the history of sugar and how it drove slavery, however, it is not comprehensive and should be considered a supplement. I'm reading a lot of different books on slavery as I develop curriculum and I felt the book, while valuable, was a bit narrow in perspective.However, it is definitely interesting and will serve as a thought provoking supplemental resource. It is worth reading.

This is a wonderful book, if you want to learn more about the history and importance of sugar during The Age of Sugar. I recommend it.Sugar production was the direct cause of slavery. And "Sugar plantations stand between the old agricultural world of the feudal period and the wage and factory labor of the industrial age," per the book. Sugar set the world of the 18th century in motion, as, almost like a modern-day addictive drug, sugar was an instant hit with whoever tasted it. As humans, from the moment we are born, we crave sweetness.The drive to produce more and more of the stuff gave men and companies the excuse to treat other men and women like animals, even to the point of working them to death in the process. Such is the story told by this book, with a smooth, honest approach, full of details and insight.Cane sugar can be traced back to the present country of New Guinea. From there, it was spread by seamen to other parts of the world. By the 1300s, Europeans emerged from the Dark Ages and began to add more flavor to their food. Italian merchants brought sugar to Italian markets. Other Europeans discovered sugar via The Crusades.The sugar plantation was the invention of the Muslins. The Spanish and Portuguese captured the Canary Islands and The Azores. There, they set up Muslim-style plantations, using African slaves as labor. These plantations had a single purpose: to grow, harvest, then process sugar to be exported and sold elsewhere.Christopher Columbus took sugar cane from these islands to what are now the modern states of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Soon, sugar plantations boomed there and in Brazil, which became the largest of all producers. Between 1500 and the mid-1800s, more than three million Africans were shipped to Brazil to work the sugar plantations. Large numbers of African slaves were also shipped to the island nations of Barbados, Jamaica and others. By the mid-1700s, so much sugar was being produced, even common people in the New World and Europe could afford it. Tea was being imported to drink for pleasure and energy, but it was the addition of sugar that made it a huge hit.The Age of Sugar was in full-swing. Per the book, "Between the 1600s and the 1800s, sugar drove the entire economy linking Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas.On the plantations, once land was cleared, the production of sugar followed a continual pattern. The "seeders" planted cane cuttings and covered them with soil. The "weeders" cleared the fields of weeds and tried to control the rats. The "cutters" worked endless hours harvesting the crop, expected to cut and bind more than 4,000 stalks per day. The stalks were sent to the grinding mills, where syrup was extracted, then boiled and strained, leaving the sugar crystals.The plantations were run like factories. The work was back-breaking and relentless. And, the book makes the point, "the Africans who labored in the sugar fields....were meant to work and die." The plantation owner was a kind of king or god, ruling over his empire of sugar. He had absolute power over the slaves, male and female. Slaves had no rights. Owners preferred to kill their slaves, rather than fear them. As a result, per the book, "on the sugar islands, while more than two million people were brought over from Africa, there were only 670,000 at (the time of) emancipation (1865)."In contrast, African slaves were the basis of wealth, not only production, for owners in the United States. More than 500,000 are estimated to have been brought in, but over the years the population of slaves grew impressively, so that by 1865 there was an eight-fold increase in their numbers, to more than 4 million African Americans.Back to Europe, per the book, sugar supplied the energy required by English workers in the mines and the factories during the industrial revolution. But sugar was also the source of the wealth to build and initially operate the factories. Per the authors, "English factories, you might say, were built, run and paid for by sugar." By 1900, sugar was used for jams, cookies, cakes, syrups, candies, tea and more. But it was the labor of the African slaves that had made this all possible. "Their labor made the Age of Sugar - the Industrial Age - possible."But the Age of Sugar would come to an end. In 1801, Black slaves in Haiti first gained their freedom via an armed revolt, and throughout Europe and America the ideas of liberty and freedom were on the rise. In 1807, England banned involvement in the slave trade, and the United States banned further importation of slaves. Sugar production continued in the United States, especially in the state of Mississippi. But by the 1890s, there was an overabundance of sugar production in the world, and the price of sugar began to collapse. Europe had perfected the cultivation of the sugar beet, which lacked the need of slave labor. There was less and less need for the cultivation of sugar cane.The book also includes sections on the development of sugar plantations in Hawaii and on the importation of sugar workers from India to the Caribbean plantations. And it ends with a Timeline of significant dates and events related to the story of sugar.

This was an interesting book that goes through the history of sugar and the impact it has had on the world. I found it engaging and I liked the fact that many old photos and pictures of paintings and sketches were included. They really helped get a sense for the various periods of time represented/detailed in this book. Obviously, sugar has been the source of a lot of violence in the world and the authors dont...ummm....sugar coat....this fact. They try to be honest and fair in their approach to this title. While I thought it wasnt perfect as a historical or contextual work, it was still very good and I enjoyed reading it quite a bit.

I enjoyed "How Sugar Changed the World....." enough to cause me to use part of my vacation to go on a tour of a sugar plantation on Maui and the adjacent Sugar Museum to learn more about the business in the Hawaiian Islands. We read this book as our book club selection. I remember the jingle, "pure cane sugar, from Hawaii" on the C& H advertisements. Little did I know that the adds were placed to cause consumers to believe that cane sugar was superior to sugar beet sugar. We all enjoyed the book but felt it glossed over some facts and was a little thin in places. We wanted to read more. For instance, I had no idea of Gandi's role in the movement to stop the kidnapping and illegal trade of Indians to work the cane fields. I didn't know about the danger of the work especially when harvest came. There was only 24-48 hours to get the cane from field to boiling pots. Everyone worked including kids. Parts of the book are hard to read because of the field workers deplorable living conditions, the brutality and inhumane practices that are described. Sugar did change the world, one of the unintended consequences was ushering in the industrial revolution. BTW, the art work in the book is great. Enjoy!

I bought this book for my granddaughter/son, but read it before handing it off. I've read other, more intense stories about the sugar trade, but I found this to be at a level for younger teens. While doing a good job of detailing the bittersweet of how this crop destroyed lives while enriching others, it did it in a very readable and understandable manor.

An excellent history that ties together the history of sweetness in numerous countries, cultures, and motivations of the worldwide expansion and development of the sugar industry. As a reader who has lived at times surrounded by sugar cane fields in the Caribbean and South America it was very interesting to read how the authors "connected the dots" of the many centuries of colonization, slavery, and economic dominance of this one product..

This was a fantastic book. If you are a history buff, or you're just curious about the dynamics of the world through a world view perspective, this book provides insights into racism, slavey, economics, and colonialism throughout the world.

Very dry but should be of interest to those born in Guyana
