#6,515 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Okay, this was freakin hilarious! I read it out loud to my mom and we were cracking up at these realistic discussions of the "joys" of raising children. This is NOT a book for people looking for sweet stories of perfect children. And there are a couple of swear words in the book (in each paragraph? :-) ), so if you have a delicate ear, this book may not be for you! But for the rest of us, it's wonderful to know that there are other mommies out there who have suffered through some of these wonderful experiences! Thank-you, Baby Sideburns, for this fun read!

Ok, I would like to first say that I think Karen Alpert (aka Baby Sideburns) is hilarious. As a mom of a 2 year old, I am glad that someone else also is going through the same things that I am. It really makes me feel better. With that being said, I was really disappointed in this book. I follow Baby Sideburns on Facebook, and when she posts stories, I usually always go and read them on her blog. There are very few of her posts that I haven't read. This book would be great for someone who didn't follow her or read her blog because most all of the stories in this book are the same ones that she's written on her blog. Because of that, I was reading things that I had already read. I'm really disappointed. I thought that these would be all new things that she was writing about, but it wasn't.This would make a fantastic gift for a new parent, or just one who doesn't actively read her blog.

My dad has always said the best jokes/humor is funny because there's an element of truth to it! Well this book is hilarious! On multiple occasions I shared excerpts of this book with fellow parents I know because I knew that particular excerpt applied to their life and they would find it funny! On multiple occasions this book spoke to me & made me laugh out loud, including times I had to hold it in because my daughter was sleeping next to me and good grief I didn't want to wake her! So, in short, if you are or were a parent of a toddler or young child this book is for you, especially for moms because there are excerpts about childbirth and husbands that moms can relate to! However, all parents will enjoy this book because they can relate to things like the annoyance that is Caillou or the joys of owning a minivan, just to name a couple. It's a fast read and I highly recommend it!

As a parent of 3 kids, I heart Karen Alpert (AKA Baby Sideburns) and her willingness to tell it like it is. My kids are teenagers now but I very clearly remember situations very similar to those Karen describes. Since I'm on the other side, I can look back through rose-colored glasses, however I know I would have appreciated Karen's "tell it like it is" style even more when I was going through it all myself. I sincerely hope she keeps writing when her kids are teens- I can only imagine what they will be up to!

Absolutely hilarious! I found myself nodding along and annoyingly reading sections to my husband, as I snorted through laughter! I absolutely love my kids, so much that it hurts sometimes. But I felt like a horrible mother feeling like I wanted to run away sometimes. Karen speaks to me, she says all of the things I'm screaming in my head, and makes me feel like I'm not the only one! A friend actually saw this book on sale and sent the link in a group text to a bunch of us with little ones. I immediately bought it and I'm so glad I did! A little comic relief for this mom, that was completely needed!

there are several places that you should not attempt to read this book.1. the sidelines of your kids soccer practice, because as you are laughing so hard you are crying, other parents are looking at you quizzically since little Johnny just got kicked and is crying.2. the waiting room outside your kids CCD class... there are a lot of pictures that make us baby-sideburns fans crack up repeatedly, while some shall-we-say less fun people will purse their lips disapprovingly.3. The back row of jury duty. The court officer will confiscate your book, although you will definitely see him smirking after lunch because he totally read it too and thought it was HILARIOUS.For real, Karen Alpert hits the nail on the head with this book the same as she does with every blog. She is funny, clever, witty, REAL, and best of all just GETS how the rest of us moms feel most of the time. I am totally going to buy 20 copies and give them out as Christmas gifts. I am still deciding about using the vagina cupcakes for Christmas baking.... :-)

I laughed so hard I snorted in parts of this book. She really does say the things most, if not all mothers, think at one time or another but are too scared? prime and proper? politically correct? to admit..The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because of the annoying overuse of the "f" word. It would have been just as funny without it, and all it did for me was distract from the flow of reading. Come on Karen, that kind of language isn't necessary to be funny.

Let's be honest here...this author breaks it down for real moms in a way that makes you feel much less crazy. You know that you're one of a community of other moms who love their kids like crazy, but are also losing their absolute S#%! on any given day. I cannot adequately convey my love for this book!

I would give this book 3.5 stars, but will bump up to four rather than down to 3 for the author’s noble objectives. As Miles writes, “We must all learn…to read one another’s scriptures with the same understanding and accommodating eye that we turn upon our own.” (21-22)Miles gives an explanation of his approach in the introduction, wherein he states that he will approach the Quran as a literary text with “suspension of disbelief.” He then explains his choice of Tarif Khalidi’s Quran translation, which is sound, as it is much more accessible to contemporary readers than, for example, Arberry or Pickthall. He also uses selections from Asad’s translation. Miles explains his choice with reference to other translations, in particular The Study Quran, which he cites on a few occasions. While the book is ostensibly about God in the Quran, there are often as many or more references to the Bible and multiple references to Christian tradition, such as Augustine, Milton, Blake, etc, accompanied by asides about the Sistine Chapel and other aspects of Euro-American civilization. This is understandable, given the author’s background and intended audience, but betrays a lack of research on his part. Whereas in Gary Wills’ What the Quran Meant and Why it Matters, we find extensive references to scholarship regarding the Quran and Islam by Muslims and non-Muslim scholars of Islam, Miles has a tendency to retreat to the familiar. This may be an effective tool for addressing his non-Muslim audience, but may also prevent him from delving deeper into interpretations of the text under consideration, the Quran. This approach does lead him to miss significant aspects of the text. For example, when discussing the question of why God did not forgive humanity immediately after the fall, Mills turns to a discussion centering on Milton’s Paradise Lost with reference to the Old and New Testaments (35-40), rather than other Quranic verses which discuss the manner in which God relented unto Adam and Eve immediately after the fall. This approach plagues the book throughout, giving us more of an appreciation for how Miles sees the Quran in relation to Christian theology and Western civilization than for what the Quran actually says and how God is presented in the Quran. If one wishes to gain a deeper understanding of what the Quran itself actually says, there are better books available.

I have read all three of Jack Miles biographies of God. This one was not a provocative or as interesting as the other two. It is not because of Jack Miles' writing, rather it due to the character of Allah. Lets face it Allah is not much of a "character" as Yahweh or Christ. Allah is beyond all. All need to submit to him. Miles shows how Allah is different by using the stories that one is familiar in the Bible and showing how different the stories or in the Qur'an. In one sense the conclusion at the end is that Islam attempts to correct the view that God is only interested in the Israelites and that God is not a Trinity. Before reading this book, I highly recommend reading Miles' previous two books

Interesting, and certainly an education for me about the Qu’ran, but not nearly the equal of Miles’ earlier works, especially the monumental God: A Biography. What I miss here is the depth of Miles’ intuitive, subjective, risky interpretations. This seems to be simply a comparison.

This scholarly and sensitive study compares and contrasts the representation of God in the Qur'an with the God of the Hebrew Bible and the God of the New Testament. They are all, of course, the same, the One True God, although they are portrayed in the scriptures in subtly but importantly different ways. The writing is dense and deeply respectful of Islam, Judaism, and Christianity, which is an exercise others have not found easy. This is not an easy read, but it is a rewarding one for those who would persist in the pursuit of deeper understanding across the borders of faith communities, a mission so sorely needed in this age.

Scholarly and with a fresh perspective on comparative concept of god.

I surely agree with reviewer "Michael." Reading this one =without= the considerable context supplied by the earlier PP winner would seem to be far less educational or rewarding than reading it =with= that backdrop. But there's a lot more to this, IMO, and MO is this: What the books =say= is open to considerable interpretation, and has been since the first renderings were rolled out about 3,000 years ago. Further, those interpretations -- decidedly including all those of the early Christian texts in the three Roman Empires of 500 to 2,000 years ago -- are what the shouting has been all about. (The politics of scriptural interpretation are at least as intriguing as the immense effects thereof.)For a researcher on the sociopsychological effects of religious belief, Miles has indeed provided useful speculations in all three of his books. But to place those speculations =in= useful context, I've turned to such as Martin Buber, Kurt Riezler, Erving Goffman, Karl Jaspers, Eric Hoffer, Walter Martin, Karen Armstrong (pretty much in the chronological order of their work), and lately, Barnaby Rogerson and Peter Frankopan. The last listed's =The Silk Roads= is the most illuminating I've yet run into on the topic, especially with regard to the rapidly changing interpretation of the Quran in the seventh and either centuries that moved Islam from one published policy with regard to other religions to quite the opposite... with enormous impact to the moment you're reading this.

#251,583 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I have been going to the restaurants run by Amy Besa and Romy Dorotan for many years, starting way back at Cendrillon in SOHO, and now at their wonderful Purple Yam in Brooklyn, but I only just found out that they have a book. Having been to the Philippines many times, starting with my US Navy days in the late 60s to being married to a Filipina for the last twenty years, I am quite familiar with Filipino cuisine. This book is just delightful. The stories that are told are so personal an so educational that I have a much better understanding of Filipino Cuisine and Filipinos. Some of the stories are similar to stories my wife has of growing up in the Philippines, and the rest are wonderful additions to my knowledge of my wife's life before I knew her. Then there are the recipes. I have an extensive cookbook section in my library, and I don't think any of them have better descriptions of methods and ingredients than the ones in this book. All in all this book is a must for anyone with any interest in the Philippines or Filipino cooking. How many cookbooks do you actually read cover to cover? With this one you probably will.

One of the cookbooks that I will cherish and use for a lifetime. I was captivated by the stories of 2 chefs who opened their American dream to make it into a reality. I was longing for a cookbook that had traditional and heirloom recipes from families that had their signature dishes from provinces in the Philippines like Vigan, Pampanga, Laguna, etcetera. This cookbook contains the history, stories from these memorable recipes and why they last for a long time for many Filipinos and other nationalities when they were presented at Cendrillon and at Purple Yam restaurant in New York. I really appreciate how the chapters were presented with introduction of ingredients, categorized into different parts of the Filipino (Spanish )meal - Breakfast, Brunch, Lunch, Merienda (Snack time) and Dinner. If this book has a James Beard Foundation award because of how this cookbook was presented and the recipes are timeless for the Filipinos and those who are curious and wants to go back to history in the Philippines. Some are traditional, and others have fusion of 2 recipes or cuisines. I recommend this book to anyone who is curious trying Filipino cuisine. I say that Filipino cuisine is often misrepresented because most foreigners feel alienated about how we cook our foods; however, we should have an open mind, heart and tastebuds to educate what Filipino cuisine is all about. I know everyone who has tried Filipino food will often associate with adobo, sinigang, lugaw or arroz caldo, pancit, turon and many common fare. But for those who are curious to go deeper into local Filipino foods that are found in the provinces and are cherished by many -- I think this is the book for you.

this book is as described by Amazon. The book is well-made = quality paper and binding. Many photographs with a storyline traveling throughout the various regions of the Philippines. As it turns out, this book focuses more on the regions and the author's memories in those regions. there's maybe about 50 to 75 recipes in this book (out of 232 pages). If you're looking for a solid Filipino cookbook filled with recipes, than this is not the cookbook for you. After looking at the recipes, there weren't very many recipes that I found appealing and would want to make at home. In a sense, it left me feeling like Filipino food was lackluster, which I know is NOT TRUE. Filipino food offers many outstanding dishes, but I did not find those recipes in this cookbook.I would not have purchased this book if I could have previewed it first at my local public library.

I ordered this book as a present for my 62 year old Filipina half-sister who has been living in the United States since last fall. Communication has been a bit of problem: I do not speak or understand Tagalog; and my sister's English is not fluent. She doesn't always understand what I am saying; and she doesn't always know how to say what she means in English. But this book has helped our communications. We sit together and go through the pages. Since the book is written in English, I read the words aloud; and as we page through the book, my sister points to the pictures and talks about her life in the Philippines. This book is helping me to learn more about the Philippines and, more importantly, has helped to bring my sister and me closer. The book has lots of good info and wonderful pictures. I do wonder whether a version of this book written in the Philippine language is available.

This is a terrific cookbook-slash-food history of a cuisine (or really cuisines) that is becoming more popular but is still not that well known outside the Philippines. Amy Besa and Romy Dorotan are great chefs and great listeners, grounding their recipes in the lives of ordinary home cooks, and honoring their work. It is clear from their recipes that they lament the modern use of processed food--there are no spam fries to be found here--but it is not snobby or fussy food. Dig in!

I bought this for my daughter. She loves this book. Her husband is Filipino and she had bought this book for his mother. Her mother-in-law was very impressed with the book and said the recipes were very authentic. My daughter was most impressed with the photography and the cultural information in the book. It is more than a cookbook. It is a look into the Filipino culture. So based on her comments and how thrilled she is with the book - I have to give it the highest rating.

I am a Pilipino home cook and the recipes here are spot on. I already know how to cook many of the dishes so the reason I bought it is for the gorgeous pictures and the bits of regional Pilipino cuisine history. Reading this book also reminds me so much of home that I feel transported back to the islands for a few minutes when I pop this book open.
