My husband and I have a young daughter who is very particular about who she lets hold her. We were searching for a book that would help us teach her that she's in control of her body and the decisions around who gets to hug her, hold her, etc. --and we found it with C is for Consent! This book should be taught in all preschools, it's lessons are that valuable and universal. Lastly, as a mixed race couple, it was so refreshing to see such a beautiful representation of so many different ethnicities in the book. Highly recommend!! -Cara S.
Exactly what we were looking for! Our 3 year old son wanted to give his friend a hug and his friend didn't want one. It was the first time we realized we needed to be actively teaching him that he is in control of his body and others are too. We needed to start talking to him about this subject and we are so happy we found C is for Consent! This will be a nightly staple for us!
This is such a thoughtful and valuable book for kids AND adults, and obviously a lot of thought has gone into doing it right and teaching people to be respectful of each others' space. I can't imagine what a positive impact a book like this would have throughout kids' lives if they learn to treat each other with the care and awareness that this book teaches. I don't entirely agree with another reviewers' concerns about race in the book – it feels like the book was constructed with care and awareness on this front as described in the kickstarter, with multiple races represented on the cover and in the pages, as well as people with disabilities... it's one of the first things I noted when I opened the book. Strong recommend!
My niece loves this book! She is 21 months but this is good for younger or older. I like that the pictures show some diversity. The concepts are easy to understand and appropriate for any age. There are even some questions in the back to facilitate discussion with the family.
I got this for my nephew (coincidentally named Finn like the main character). There is a growing library of books on this topic for kids, but this is the best one I’ve seen so far. Finn is a little young for it now but I hope to read it and help reinforce these ideas as he grows up. Great for boys and girls, and though I usually prefer female or non-binary main characters since there historically have been few of them, I love that this one is a boy because these lessons are so important for boys.
We got this book as a gift for our little one at our baby shower and now it's my go-to shower gift! The message is so great and NECESSARY, and the story is the perfect mix of narrative teaching. Plus, the illustrations really made me happy -- showcasing so many different types of peeps! The world is a diverse place -- as the illustrations show -- but the story's message is universal and powerful. So glad this book exists!!!
This book is perfect for opening a conversation with your children AND relatives about the importance of understanding that individuals have power over their bodies. I like that it gives kids language to use in situations where they just don’t feel comfortable.
Consent is so important and not taught in schools or in most folks homes. I’d like my kid(s) to know what it means to ask for consent and that people should ask him for consent before touching, hugging, kissing, etc. it’s important for him to understand bodily autonomy and to respect others and I think this is a good start to getting us there.
