The idea that the more power one individual leader wields, the more we should be impressed by that leader is an illusion. Where corners are cut because one leader is sure he knows best, problems follow, and they can be on a disastrous scale, according to Archie Brown in this book. The book examines the leadership styles of a large range of political leaders including dictators and democratic leaders.The author’s essential thesis is that it is unhelpful to rate political leaders on a single strong-weak scale given that there are so many different dimensions to effective leadership, and indeed leaders who are unconstrained by others in making their decisions tend to make significantly poorer decisions. Mao Zedong was a better leader in the early days of the Chinese Communist Party than when he acquired a position of absolute power. Tony Blair made his poorest decisions when he made them without adequate discussion with others.The book tells interesting stories about a very large number of political leaders from the past century. The author has a great deal of personal knowledge of many of those leaders, and the book is an excellent history book. However, it is hard to read the book without observing that the best leaders are rarely the ones who float to the top of the political process, whether in democracies or in dictatorships. The author has provided extensive material to demonstrate the dangers of the “strong” political leader, but the stories do not coalesce into a neat description of the characteristics of a “good” political leader.

The book starts with a simple statement which to me was only obvious after I had read it: concentrating power in a “strong leader” means allocating it arbitrarily to the leader’s personal assistants.Because no single human can cope with the increased volume of information and decisions - despite the myths these “strong leaders” like to perpetuate about themselves - the decisions get made by the close staff of these leaders.This leaves out the other people who should have led on these decisions, eg cabinet members who are of higher calibre and expertise and experience than the advisers.Furthermore, more discussion with more people gets better decisions. This is obvious with the likes of Hitler, Mussolini, Mao and Stalin as leaders who accumulated power. But the book is full of examples of other leaders to make the case.I wish history at schools was taught about these leaders and events, the 20th century is about more than Hitler but sadly that’s too often all children are taught about.I don’t know that the author’s case is conclusively proven - it’s hard to make this into a scientific argument. But it’s fascinating to read and - especially as the author dislikes Tony Blair greatly - to read it in light of Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership style. A really enjoyable and thoughtful book.

Finally an analysis of what really works in leadership! A strong leader is fine if they have the bandwidth and perfect intelligence to make the correct decision every time. This is folly. The better way is to get all the intelligent, diverse input then lead to a decision. Fascinating!

Autocratic leaders almost always fail at some point with disastrous consequences for themselves as well as the people they lead. Consensus builders achieve lasting results. The book is a history lesson on how leaders of 20th and 21st century shaped the world that we live in today.

I wish it addressed a bit more on the personalities of the leaders describe more how they were and how they handled they’re position in government.

I like this book because I'm such a fan of collaborative leadership. This book shows why authoritarian leadership is not helpful and not even strong.

I recently read about a sex education program in the UK that features an explicit video that is to be used in sex ed programs for SEVEN to NINE year old children. That same day, I read in this book about Our Lady of Good Success. During the 1600's, the Blessed Mother appeared to a nun in Quito, Ecuador, describing to the nun the things that would transpire in the 20th century: "Innocence will almost no longer be found in children, nor modesty in women, and in this supreme moment of need of the Church, those who should speak shall fall silent." And further: "There will be almost no virgin souls in the world... During these unfortunate times, evil will invade childhood innocence." It can hardly be denied that we are living in the times spoken of so long ago, with heartbreaking results for children and families. What family today has not been touched by these realities? Mary also accurately speaks of the state of Holy Orders. Imagine if she had mentioned such things as embryonic stem cell research, or women selling their eggs so that their unknown offspring could be used for scientific research. Few in the 17th century could even have understood such concepts. We are surely living in times that cry out to God for justice, yet Our Blessed Mother intercedes so that we can instead experience His mercy.Mary has made it clear that she must have our help to fight this battle. Even those of us who pray the rosary, occasionally, and receive Communion frequently, need the urgent reminders and encouragement found in this book. What Mary asks of us is so simple - prayer, fasting and sacrifice for sinners along with the daily rosary and the wearing of the scapular. She gives so many promises of her special help to those who answer her call. As the author asks, could our answer to these motherly requests possibly be "no"? What a wonderful book this is, filled not only with warnings but with encouragement to fight for the souls of our fellow men.We know how this battle is going to end. Let's not just be on the winning side, let's be Mary's foot soldiers. If you come across this book, read it, follow all that Mary asks. Take it as a personal invitation. Many thanks to Dr. Bowring for providing this very thorough collection of warnings, promises and prophecies. We have started saying the family rosary in response to his book. With each daily rosary I pray, as he did, that Mary will give us the grace to say it again tomorrow.

A disclaimer: Dr Bowring and I went to Catholic grade school together but we lost touch until a few years ago. I approach this review as someone who has both read the book and knows the author. This book burns with the authentic zeal of someone who loves Jesus and His Mother Mary deeply...as well as the fallen world in which we all live. For that reason alone, I highly recommend the book.But, knowing Kelly personally, I can also attest to the depth of his character. I am not surprised that he excelled at theology and has put his academic excellence at the service of the Catholic Church and her people, which is what a true theologian should do. Nor am I surprised that although he is devoted to the Medjugorje apparitions, he has the humility to place these apparitions under the magisterial judgment and authority of the Church. Like the great theologians of old, he is willing to submit his intellect to the teaching authority of the Church. If in the future the Church rules that Medjugorje is inauthentic, I am confident that Dr Bowring will submit humbly to that ruling and revise his writings accordingly.However, the fundamental message of prayer, conversion, repentance, and being watchful for the end times is a message that needs to be proclaimed regardless of any future rulings about Medjugorje. Our Lady in other approved apparitions has been telling our tired, sinful world that a return to prayer, repentance, and sacrifice is necessary to avert the just punishments we deserve. In fact, as Kelly points out, this is a core teaching of the Gospel, and Mary is merely acting as a prophet. So, armed with this wonderful book, let us all reform our lives, turn to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Sacred Heart of Jesus for comfort, and trust in the Lord for His final victory.

There are so many approved apparitions (and those not yet decided on) that I am unaware of and their messages so vividly - and imminently these days - stress a change of heart and setting one's primary focus and goal as God as the center. This book took a single topic and showed how so many apparition messages have the same themes and goal. It provides a recognition that there is a spiritual battle happening and gives practical ides for how we can use the gifts God has given us to triumph over our little battles and contribute to the success of the big battle while saving the souls of ourselves and others who are living too much in the world.

I like this book a lot. It presents the information clearly and in logical manner. The contents about the prophesies of the Virgin Mary, shows that the author has comprehensive knowledge of the subject and also of the Book of Revelations. This book is targeted to Catholics that believe in the Virgin Mary and those who have an open mind. Those individuals who do not believe should not read this book.

This book was recommended to me by a wonderful priest after I cried and cried to him about the happenings in this world/country. He pulled this book out, opened it up and read some passages. I sat there almost frozen in amazement. It is a book that I keep on my bed stand with the bible and read often. I have read it through once and am reading it again. Sometimes I just look at specific chapters. I tell all of my catholic friends to read it. I insist until they do and then they thank me over and over again.
