Review

PRAISE FOR THE MARK OF ATHENA"With his now-trademark zero-to-60 acceleration, the author engineers a ghostly possession to set Greeks and Romans at odds and initiates the Prophecy of the Seven, hurtling Annabeth, Percy, Piper, Leo, Hazel, Frank and Jason into a pell-mell flight on the magical trireme Argo II. Here, Riordan's infectious love for his subject matter really comes through, even as he takes some real risks with his characters. A literal cliffhanger leaves eager readers hanging; next stop: Greece-and Tartarus."―Kirkus ReviewsPRAISE FOR THE MARK OF ATHENA"Terrifying dreams and enigmatic prophecies mean danger for seven teen demigods, but also good times for fans of The Heroes of Olympus series. This third volume thrusts Percy, Jason, Annabeth, Hazel, Leo, Frank, and Piper into action once again. Throughout the novel, the juxtaposition of humor and terror makes both aspects of the writing more vivid. The demigods use their wits and their weapons skillfully in a string of encounters, and their insecurities make the characters all the more appealing. With a true storyteller's sense of pacing, Riordan creates another compelling adventure, right down to the cliff-hanger at the end. Stay tuned for volume four."―Booklist Online

This was a Christmas present for a friend's grand daughter and the kid loved it which is cool, and appreciated getting it from her "Aunt" Gena, which made me feel good. It was on the top of her list of books she would like to have.

Reading this book series is starting to feel a lot like coming home. A really brutal, terrifying home, what with all of the monsters and war and whatnot, but home nonetheless.Riordan continues to blow me away with these books and I'm really not sure what I'm going to do when I finish this series. But luckily for me, I have almost a thousand pages before I need to worry about that. However, I digress, let's move on to the good stuff! This book! Ahhhhhh!!!!! That covers it pretty accurately. The Percabeth reunion! Perfection. It was done in true Percabeth form. "Hi, sweetheart, I'm sorry I went missing for six months after a nutty goddess stole my memory. Give me a kiss and then we'll go stop the vicious goddess of Earth from rising." I mean, what else did I expect?Coach Hedge. I freaking love Coach Hedge; he's the perfect non chaperone chaperone to have on the "Argo II."I loved seeing the "Big Seven" together for the first time (even if it wasn't the great first meeting) and I really enjoyed watching them grow as a team as the book went on.I love each of the "Big Seven" but seriously, how can anyone not love Leo Valdez? The part with Leo and Echo and Narcissus had me laughing out loud. Oh goodness. Such a great moment. The performing giants! Glad to see that the monsters are broadening their horizons a bit. Killing demigods just doesn't pay the bills, you know.Annabeth is such a boss! I was literally cheering for her when she was on her journey, and she came out victorious! (Kind of, but we'll get to that in a minute.)Thank you, Rick Riordan, for writing a kick butt female heroine that is smart, strong, and brave. I love that Annabeth was/is kind of the leader of the team; everyone looks to her because of her wisdom and knowledge. The feminist in me did a fist pump for that.Ok, that freaking cliff hanger. What the what?! Rick! How could you do that to my babies? Ugh. I knew it was coming, but it was like my stomach dropped down with them. This book was phenomenal! I'm loving this adventure with the gang, no matter how hazardous it is to my emotional health. :o)Onward to the next one!

If you have a reluctant reader, maybe you just need the right material! My 10 year old son is now at an 8th grade reading level (from 4th grade level at the beginning of this school year) thanks to Rick Riordan books!)Riordan has created another great book series that has sparked the LOVE of reading in my child and it's priceless to me! I will buy anything he writes to keep my 10 year old son engaged in reading for the love of it. I love this author's work with all of my heart. If I ever meet Rick Riordan in person, I'm going to shake his hand and thank him for writing outstanding books LOVED by my son. I'll of course ask for an autograph in one of books too! (OR "Please take a sharpie to this Kindle cover! You're THE MAN!")This school year, my son has become highly competitive by earning AR points in school (Accelerated Reader points). There's a donut party kids may attend if they achieve 100 AR Points in a semester. He's going to easily reach this goal since he's tearing through these books!!! Do I love that my boy WANTS to be a super reader?!! Yes, of course!!! I am in two book clubs, and I was bitten by the book bug at that age, and I could not be happier! This momma is really, really happy! I may even have to start reading these to see what all the fuss is about. I enjoy reading young adult books sometimes. I'll just borrow my sons books when he's done.:)

My son absolutely loves this series. Keep writing and he will keep reading!Annabeth is terrified. Just when she's about to be reunited with Percy—after six months of being apart, thanks to Hera—it looks like Camp Jupiter is preparing for war. As Annabeth and her friends Jason, Piper, and Leo fly in on the Argo II, she can't blame the Roman demigods for thinking the ship is a Greek weapon. With its steaming bronze dragon masthead, Leo's fantastical creation doesn't appear friendly. Annabeth hopes that the sight of their praetor Jason on deck will reassure the Romans that the visitors from Camp Half-Blood are coming in peace. And that's only one of her worries. In her pocket Annabeth carries a gift from her mother that came with an unnerving demand: Follow the Mark of Athena. Avenge me. Annabeth already feels weighed down by the prophecy that will send seven demigods on a quest to find—and close— the Doors of Death. What more does Athena want from her?Annabeth's biggest fear, though, is that Percy might have changed. What if he's now attached to Roman ways? Does he still need his old friends? As the daughter of the goddess of war and wisdom, Annabeth knows she was born to be a leader, but never again does she want to be without Seaweed Brain by her side.Narrated by four different demigods, The Mark of Athena is an unforgettable journey across land and sea to Rome, where important discoveries, surprising sacrifices, and unspeakable horrors await. Climb aboard the Argo II, if you dare…

From Booklist

*Starred Review* In The Tenth Parallel (2010), Griswold offered keen geopolitical insight by cataloging ongoing religious strife in contentious locales, including Indonesia, Nigeria, and Sudan. Here, the globetrotting Griswold recruits renowned photographer Seamus Murphy to provide the visuals, and turns her attention to Afghanistan in order to record a collection of landays, Afghani folk poems, typically sung by women in private. With the help of local guides and Pashto translators, Griswold convinces women to share couplets that touch on a wide range of emotions and themes, from love and grief to separation and war. Because the lyrics remain anonymous over generations, Afghan women use them to express freely their desires and frustrations, yet still risk violating Taliban strictures against song and dance. From heartbreaking indictments of fathers who sell their daughters into slavery to humorous, techno-savvy posts on a Pashto Landay Facebook page, Griswold’s selections illustrate the rich potential of this poetic form, at once contemporary and timeless. Murphy’s stunning photographs complement the text perfectly, capturing children at play in refugee camps outside Kabul, smiling U.S. soldiers pointing squirt guns, and armed militants marching through the mountains. A timely, indispensable, and unforgettable poetic documentary. --Diego Báez

Review

“Griswold's translations mark a stunning handling of [landay's] complex 'beauty, bawdiness, and wit.' Flanked by Murphy's photographs, with their striking blend of wartime journalism and human compassion, Griswold's couplets are peppered with brief prose passages in which she delves into cultural and historical traditions that inform the humor and gravity of her translations . . . a collection that may indeed be remembered as a groundbreaking work of translation and poetic journalism.” ―Publishers Weekly“Eliza Griswold and Seamus Murphy have made a book that is necessary reading for anyone who has ever made assumptions from a distance about what a burka-wearing woman might be like, and for anyone who cannot fathom how poetry could get you killed. In other words, this book is a must-read for every U.S. citizen . . . Griswold's and Murphy's work might be a crucial turning point in the education of Americans about the real world and the place of poetry in it.” ―Daniel Bosch, The Daily Beast“The book's greatest strength is the complicated spectrum of voices that it allows these women, whom we wouldn't otherwise know anything about. I Am the Beggar of the World casts Pashtun women as vibrantly self-aware and autonomous . . . Griswold finds a way to present these poems and images in juxtaposition so that they evoke a multiplicity of voices and views, giving an almost democratic quality to the anthology's populace.” ―Jay Deshpande, The Millions“*Starred review* "From heartbreaking indictments of fathers who sell their daughters into slavery to humorous, techno-savvy posts on a Pashto Landay Facebook page, Griswold's selections illustrate the rich potential of this poetic form, at once contemporary and timeless. Murphy's stunning photographs complement the text perfectly, capturing children at play in refugee camps outside Kabul, smiling U.S. soldiers pointing squirt guns, and armed militants marching through the mountains. A timely, indispensable, and unforgettable poetic documentary.” ―Diego Báez, Booklist“I Am the Beggar of the World, translated by journalist and poet Eliza Griswold, with photos by Seamus Murphy, collects passionate, polemical, and traditionally secret two-line folk poems by Pashtun women on topics ranging from education, war, and personal autonomy to marriage, faith, loss, and homeland.” ―Elle“I Am the Beggar of the World is a great and satisfying work. I applaud Eliza Griswold and Seamus Murphy. It is an essential look at the women of Afghanistan and the voices of dissent at risk of being suppressed when the American forces withdraw.” ―Sahera Sharif, Member of Afghanistan’s Parliament, founder of nationwide women’s literary circle, Mirman Baheer“The poems in I Am the Beggar of the World cut like a knife-they are short, sharp-and leave you bleeding. They are the most direct voices of the inner life of Afghan women, and prove that these women, despite all hardships, are still standing. These two-liners make the reader feel close to the women that we've seen so often on the screen wandering like blue-clad ghosts on the dusty roadsides. A heart is a heart anywhere in the world.” ―Åsne Seierstad, author of The Bookseller of Kabul“I Am the Beggar of the World is a revelatory book about Afghanistan, one sure to turn all the stereotypes about the country's women on their heads. The poems, equally art and reportage, are often poignant, more often witty, even pungent. They, along with the accompanying text and photographs, illuminate the beauty of the country and its culture, the sadness of its history, and the humor, the hopes, the bitterness, and even the contradictions its women-no different than women anywhere-carry in their hearts. This is an important book, but to describe it only that way is to neglect how deeply pleasurable it is to read.” ―Amy Waldman, author of The Submission“Eliza Griswold brings a poet's sensibility, a folklorist's skills, and a journalist's savvy to these startling and incendiary folk poems by Afghan women, which she has so daringly collected and translated. With its arresting photographs and heartbreaking two-liners, I Am the Beggar of the World enlarges our sense of the work that poetry does in the world.” ―Edward Hirsch, author of The Living Fire“This is poetry of a rural tradition that is as world-wise, war-wise and uniquely sophisticated as any collection of writing by women, anywhere.” ―Carol Muske-Dukes, author of Twin Cities

This is a terrific collection of poems from women whose work is rarely noted. I'm an avid fan of the works by Middle Eastern women and teach a course on this literature at my university. There is an amazing body of work from the women of this region.

The landays and women who wrote them are enlightening and inspiring. I went to a reading by Eliza Griswold and was so moved by the amazing prose these women have created and the lengths they go to in order to share them with each other, often risking their lives. It's devastating how these women and their voices are oppressed by the Taliban. Hearing these poems makes a great case for funding more education for girls in Afghanistan and other Taliban-run areas.

Beautiful, moving and mesmerizing language. Courageous research. Stunning, haunting photographs. A work of great beauty. A book to read and re read over and over again.

Womens' oral poetry from Afghanistan--The explanatory sections weren't quite as seamless as I would have liked--Although they were necessary for understanding the Landays

Real, alive and full of spirit and hope. It gave me a much better understanding of what the lives of these women are like.

a stunning, intriguing book - highly recommended

An interesting and haunting book.

I liked it so much that I bought a second copy for a friend.

FINAL DECISION: Felt more like historical women's fiction than romance. I enjoyed the story of Eva's fight to be recognized for her architectural talents, but I really didn't think the romance was exciting or interesting.THE STORY: Lady Eva Hyde has three dead fiances and a father who no longer can do his work. When Eva gets the opportunity to pretend to be her father in order to be an architect on a project in New York, Eva leaps on the opportunity. On the trip across the Atlantic, Eva succumbs to passion with a stranger and then flees. She is horrified when he arrives in New York and realizes that her stranger is Phillip Mansfield, who happens to be her employer. Eva continues to pretend that her father is in charge of the project and she is there to execute his will. The antagonism from others about her working on the project, threaten Eva's desire to establish herself as a professional.OPINION: I've really enjoyed Shupes Guilded Age books, but this one was a big miss for me. While I was really interested in Eva's professional journey, I didn't like the romance at all. In fact, I sympathized with Phillip through the entire book and really thought he should dump Eva to find a better woman. This book felt like a historical woman's fiction book focused on Eva remaking her life. But she felt selfish and self-centered to me. She lies about who is the architect and then has the nerve to be annoyed at Phillip when he is almost destroyed by her deception. While there is a pro forma "making up" on her part, I never felt that she put her relationship with Phillip over her own ambitions. She lies to him, keeps him at a distance, and basically treats him as beneath her dreams.I didn't like her treatment of him, couldn't understand his willingness to deal with her unless he has no self-respect himself. I want my romances to be about the relationship over all and this book doesn't come close to meeting that standard. The book is well written for what it is and I am sure that readers looking for a woman's journey to fight prejudice to be a trailblazer will find something good in this story, but I prefer my romances to be about romance.WORTH MENTIONING: This book takes place during the Gilded Age.CONNECTED BOOKS: A SCANDALOUS DEAL is the second book in the Four Hundred series. While there are small appearances by characters from the prior book, this book is a complete standalone.STAR RATING: I give this book 2 stars.NOTE: I received an ARC of this book via Edelweiss in order to prepare this review. I was not required to write a review or to write a positive review. All opinions contained herein are my own.

Once again Joanna Shupe takes us back to the growth and development of New York City reflected in the era of the Gilded Age. She does so through the wonderful main characters of Lady Eva Hyde and Mr. Philip Mansfield.Lady Eva is the daughter of well-known and respected British architect E.M. Hyde, Lord Cassell. Eva is, however, a talented architect in her own right. It's just that the world does not know this, because, although she has learned the art and science of architecture at the side of her talented father, she is a woman and society does not readily accept a woman who wants to work in a 'man's' field (or any other in truth); or who does not fall into the conventional picture of womanhood. Also, Lord Cassell is ill and because he has been a terrible money manager Eva must pass his work off as her own, and therefore hide his illness (dementia) from the world.Lady Eva is on her way to NYC to work for Mr. Philip Mansfield who is a wealthy and successful businessman who is using his money to develop the business world of the city by building a modern hotel designed by Lord Cassell. At least, he believes it has been designed by him. In reality it is all Eva's work. The story begins with an ocean crossing carrying Eva and Philip to NYC. The meeting of these two people on the ocean-liner is a charming part of the novel. However, the re-meeting of these two people as they find themselves revealed as who they really are is more than disconcerting for them, especially when Philip realizes that the woman who intrigued him at sea is none other the woman who will be Lord Cassell's representative for his hotel. And when Eva remembers herself in Philip's arms as they lived through an evening of rough seas eased by lots of champagne, and buffeted by laughing and lovely emotions. Now they have to set their initial meeting aside, and work together. The story continues to unfold as the hotel building continues. As has been mentioned the issues reflected in the story are quite familiar for people today: a woman dealing with men who don't respect her intelligence and abilities, a man who isn't sure how he feels about a woman seeking work equality, and respect between the genders. The secondary characters in the novel are also well-developed. They add nice layers to the story. Philip's mother, Ellen, is an intriguing character, as is Philip's lawyer, and his friend, Rebecca Hall.Often in historical novels that include romance there are deceptions that must be overcome. This is definitely true in this story. Some people have balked at his aspect of the story on the part of Lady Eva, because the deceptions all rest on her shoulders. However, the reader has to ask if there are realistically any other ways she could have handled her situations and issues, and also remain a viable part of the work she came to NYC to accomplish. Not to mention the income that she needs from this work. These deceptions, however, do need resolution, and forgiveness and understanding on the part of Philip Mansfield. The question is whether or not he can find it within himself to find this forgiveness and understanding of Eva's life situations and difficulties. There is a lot of historical content in this novel. A few reviewers have said they feel this 'history' overtakes the romance of the story. This wasn't the case for me. In fact, I find that these historical features and facts make the story more realistic to the era of the novel, and to the characters. It also reinforces the idea that past history remains relevant to issues of our own day.

The excellent second book in Shupe's Four Hundred series gets off to an intriguing start with a sexy shipboard encounter with a stranger. The architect heroine, who is determined to be taken seriously, runs into trouble when her shipboard lover turns out to be her new boss. As always, I'm in love with the Gilded Age setting of this series. There's also a dash of mystery when accidents start occurring at the construction site. I loved the architecture details and New York setting. Another winner! I loved it.
