Oscar Wilde, for all his wit and wisdom was a man unable to survive his abbreviated lifetime. A married Gay man representing himself publicly as straight (not a word so commonly used to represent sexuality in the 19th Century) was eventually drawn into the courts of Great Britain surprising Wilde beyond his comprehension. His self-interests were not legally appreciated in the U.K. at that time resulting in his imprisonment. Wilde was witty, brave, and held much contempt for those who could not possibly understand the lifestyles of those who were so easily discriminated against and so swiftly thrust into jail. The Oscar Wilde depicted through his wit and wisdom is how I am certain he wanted to be remembered. Writing and dying under an assumed name, Sebastian Melmoth was nothing of the outcome he would have expected. I believe, however, and to his satisfaction, he presents himself to us as we know him: a great and clever author and poet.

Oscar Wilde was a remarkable person beyond his means of expressing life as he discovered it. His acerbic nature was the disguise he used in order to survive; imprisoned for simply being himself, Wilde nonetheless fought for his rights to speak, even to breathe until even that was taken from him. His years away from Ireland and Britain were far from easy; writing under an assumed name, Sebastian Malmuth, Wilde remained in character, but only when he chose to again appear publicly through his words. Persecuted for what some believed to be indecent and immoral, Wilde was imprisoned and in essence, forgotten, but he remains today an open mind expressing many things from the psyche and the heart. He was brilliant yet fragile and in our era, our time, his success would have been ten times fold; genius has many names, and Oscar Wilde is among them.

I'm a huge Oscar Wilde fan. This collection is a delight. What's not to love when you have a pocketful of his nuggets like: "No man is rich enough to buy back his past." -An Ideal Husband.or "Rich Bachelors should be taxed. It's not fair that some men should be happier than others." - In Conversation.Get it. Sip a little with your tea. ;-)

a lot of the quotes aren’t from him. they give credit to other different people... good thing it was cheap kinda regret it. i wanted to read his work not somebody else

Oscar Wilde's witticisms are perhaps the most powerful words. He could cut up an adversary with a few well placed sentences. Funny and insightful, irreverent and powerful. I keep a copy by my nightstand.

Who doesn't love Oscar Wilde? Great quips!

I think Wilde was the Britain's greatest genius of the 19th century - poems, tales, stories, a novel, plays, essays. He did it all and did it all perfectly. He was also a wit. Better than Shaw. One note: He made the English happy. So they put him in jail for 2 years which ruined his health which soon killed him. But he died in France, not England.

Great little book. I am a big fan of small, memorable quotes and insights and this book gave me what I wanted.

You were likely wondering that if you're reading the reviews, as was I, so I will be basing most of my comparison on it. I was concerned that we'd be left with the same "whiskey tango foxtrot was that, and what happened to my Ty and Zane?!" feeling that B and C dumped on us, but Abigail Roux more than made up for the last mess with a great finale. Thank the baby Jesus. While there is a lot of Sidewinder in this book, they don't hijack it. It remains Ty's and Zane's story with some very important supporting characters. Yes, Nick is an integral role in this story, but not in a way that you want to smack your tablet into your forehead. The guys band together in a way that had me teary eyed. You feel the love. But again, I will stress that it did not feel like the other characters were being force fed to the reader. As for the characters themselves, that's another (dare I say most important) element I was very happy to see the author turn around. In the last book, they felt watered down, silly, and generic. Crash and Burn brings us back to what made us love these characters. They grew their balls back! They don't have to lose their edge simply because they've outgrown their love/hate limbo, and this book proves it. Ty has that scrappy, rakish quality again, and Zane is once more a badass mofo. The only difference is that they've grown in their relationship and ability to trust each other. Zane does things with knives that make me want to high five the nearest stranger. Ty fills the violence shaped void in his big, squishy heart. Chester has a "holy crap that's awesome!" moment. And Nick.. Well, I'm not angry at him for being in the book like I was the last go. Okay, I actually LIKED him in this one. Oh, and the witty banter is back! How I'd missed the sarcasm and uncomfortable jabs here. There's some very real tension and barriers they have to talk out between a few characters (namely Ty and Nick), but it gets you right in the gut. They aren't whining or being pig headed. Instead, they have to figure out how deep trust and brotherhood really run.If you can't handle a slight spoiler- as in something that happens in the first couple chapters- this is where you stop reading.I was so happy to see a couple big cliches avoided. For one, I was thoroughly expecting the impromptu wedding to go predictably array and dragged to the end of their happily ever ending. It didn't! They decided, "hey, we're doing this now come hell or high water," and they did.. Very early in the book. It was perfect for them. Invisible color palate and a stealth theme, but still heartbreakingly romantic. As for the end, I won't go into any detail, but it was satisfying without being toothache sweet. No cringing necessary. Just enough happy ending to make my heart feel a little better about leaving these guys.Overall, this ending was worthy of a great series with wonderful characters. Abi Roux has a special way with giving the reader a chance to really bond with these guys. I empathized with them in a profound way, cried with them, laughed with AND at them. I am so sad to see them go, but it was a beautiful journey that was worthy of a great, explosive (bad pun penalty!) ending. Time to go cry now.

Crash & Burn is the ninth and last installment of the iconic Cut & Run series. With this book, Ms. Roux ends the saga that started as a collaboration with her co-author, Madeleine Urban, and became a solo effort following book 4. We learn, in the author’s notes, that the original division of labor between the two authors was that one wrote Ty, the other wrote Zane. Starting with book five, Ms. Roux took on both and, I must say, the transition was pretty much seamless. For those who don’t already know, Ty and Zane are Federal Agents (FBI), both of whom are gay, though initially, deep in the closet. In the first book, Cut & Run, Zane is just coming off a profoundly disturbing and unsettling long-term undercover operation, posing as the lover of the head of the most notorious drug cartel operating in South Florida. Lots of people want him dead. Ty is the hand-picked right arm of Director Richard Burns, a close friend of Ty’s father - their friendship was forged in the crucible of Vietnam. Burns is virtually a father to Ty. I suppose the partnership between Ty and Zane was supposed to be the pairing of opposites. That turns out not to quite be the case, as we discover in Crash & Burn. Burns was not a good guy. That’s the beauty of this final book in the series: it turns out that not much was as it seemed throughout the first eight books, and all is finally revealed. The talented Ms. Roux handles this wrap-up with energy, aplomb and polish. I worried about how she would handle it, aware of the risk that this final book could devolve into a less-than-satisfying compilation of flashbacks, but she avoids that trap most adroitly. All the action in this book is action moving forwards, and the past is explained and illuminated only by what is happening now. Behind-the-scenes manipulations, unforgivable motivations and a callous disregard for human life (even of those you’re supposed to love) all rear their ugly heads as Crash & Burn races to its exciting climax. For many of us, Cut & Run was our introduction to a whole new world of possibilities in gay fiction. Defying all romance traditions, this whole series is an amazing epic consisting of national and international crime thrillers and deadly high-speed action. Good thrillers, I might add, with impressive villains, rogue agencies, drug cartels and players who, until this very last book, don’t reveal whether they’re heroes or villains. The fact that the men are gay? That’s a side issue. These books were not gay action thrillers, these were action thrillers that just happened to feature a powerful, smart and occasionally ruthless (when required) pair of gay men. They not only learn to get along, but to build a life together, share a love that ripens from the violent lust of their first encounters into the mature affection and passion of people who have been together for a long time and love and trust each other without reservation. As we journey from book-to-book, we get to know their histories, their families, their dreams (both individual and shared), their friends, their strong moral code and we get to watch them grow and develop as agents, men, and as a committed couple.I’m working really hard not to give away any spoilers in this review, but let’s just say Ty and Zane get to finally express their commitment to one another in a most surprising and moving scene set in the Baltimore Harbor. It’s a gem of writing, and the culmination of more than 8 years of adventure, danger, death and love.It almost goes without saying that Ms. Roux is an extraordinarily talented author. The characters she has created are so vivid and real, they jump off the page at the reader. More than once, I had an almost irresistible desire to duck to avoid a punch or bullet that seemed to come out of my Kindle, right at my face. I survived. So do Ty And Zane. Some long-time characters do not, however, in the final conflict between Ty and Zane, Ty’s former military team (The Sidewinders), the CIA, the NRI, the Cartel and even the Miami police. And some characters whom you will assume to be dead, miraculously end up in a hospital healing, slowly, but healing nonetheless.Aside from Abigail Roux, not many authors could have come up with the colorful Appalachian family that loves their son, Ty, unconditionally, including his grandfather, Chester, who, even at an advanced age, trounces evildoers with the garden shovel he keeps on his person at all times. He’s the crazy old coot who always speaks the truth, regardless of the consequences.Add to that a whole platoon of former Force Recon soldiers who served under Ty in some dangerous, secret operations in unnamed foreign countries, and who still function as a multi-talented, perfectly-trained and -tuned family of soldiers who protect each other at the risk of their own lives. These are men who come running to help, even when they haven’t been asked. They’re so cool, so complex and so powerful, that Ms. Roux has spun them off into their own series, the “Sidewinder” books. They’re back for the grand finale of Cut & Run.Despite all the macho posturing, marine loyalty, guns, bombs and physical conflict, Ms. Roux is also a great master at weaving moving moments of love and affection into the heart-stopping action. It is nothing less than beautiful to see the attraction that started out as fistfights between these two powerful, independent men, grown into an exquisite, uncomplicated and utterly unbreakable love. If it doesn’t move you, you may not have a heart. There are many ways that Ms. Roux could have ended this brilliant and path-blazing series. She could have just let the clock run out, killed one of the beloved characters off, or just phoned in one final thriller. Thankfully, she did none of those. Instead, she delivered a brand new, fresh, thriller leavened with a perfect balance of love, friendship and commitment that evokes thrills, fears, anger, disappointment, tears and even occasional laughter. She created a “perfect ending” by making the final book in this series one of its best.Thank you, Ms. Roux for eight years of wonderful reading, brilliant characters and a perfect ending.

THIS IS A REALLY GOOD BOOK FOR GAINING THE UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT IT TAKES TO OWN AND CARE FOR A 1000 LB. ANIMAL! I LOVE HORSES----ALWAYS HAVE. MY BROTHER LIVED IN SIERRA NEVADAS AND OWNED THREE BEAUTIES; I WANTED TO UNDERSTAND WHAT HE DID TO CARE FOR THEM. AND THEY ALL ADORED HIS, ESP HIS 18-HANDS APPALOOSA NAMED DANNY. HE TALKED TO THEM AND LOVED THEM AND WORKED THEM HARD. THIS BOOK SHOWS WHAT A HUGE UNDERTAKING IT IS TO OWN ONE OF THESE BEAUTIES..... THANK YOU FOR SUCH A WEALTH OF GOOD INFORMATION! SARAH WURM ROSSI

My husband and I bought an old farmhouse on 22-some acres this summer and to our surprise and dismay, two horses were left on the property when we took possession. We decided to keep them but neither one of us has ever owned a horse before so we were really flailing. I joined an online horse forum but after lurking for a few days I formed the opinion that the horsey set is about 90% condescending, opinionated control freaks who make everything needlessly dramatic and complicated. Meanwhile the horses just do their thing and I was having a hard time accepting that they were going to be especially high-maintenance, as I was warned over and over again. We aren't riders so these horses are more like very large pets to us. I wondered to myself if there was such a book as "Horses For Dummies" and lo and behold, Amazon came through once again. They are not especially difficult to take care of, just expensive. Lucky for us these two are good-natured and used to human contact so they cooperate with our bumbling and fumbling around with halters, grooming tools, etc. pretty patiently. I do wish there was more information on interpersonal relationships though. One of the horses is young (about 4 years old) and has not been gelded so he does try the alpha male bit with us humans. Again, lucky for us, the older horse is clearly the alpha between the two of them and he keeps the younger horse in line. The young one is not mean or aggressive, just playful. He responds well to firm correction but I have had to look elsewhere for tips on this as there is not much information in the book.

Bought this book to learn more about horses when I was first learning to ride. It was really interesting and written in a not confusing way. Like any book, you get out what you put in. My copy is full of annotations and notes, so I think I got everything out of it. Good buy.

This is a fantastic book on horses. I have 2 books on horses that talk about the breeds of horses there are. I don't have a horse, I just really like them, ever since I was little. But I wanted to get a book on horse care, so I could learn about what its like to care for a horse. This book taught me things about horses and horse care that I didn't know. 10/10 would recommend this book to horse owners or horse lovers that want to know what its like to care for a horse.

bought this for a friend who is learning about horses this is a fantastic reference guide for all it reminds those of us who have been around horses a long time of things we knew but had stock piled away in our memory

From School Library Journal

Gr 5 Up—Whereas the first volume of Colonial Comics focused on the years 1620–1750, this installment tackles a better-known time period in American history. However, Rodriguez has chosen to examine lesser-known people and events or lesser-known aspects of famous people and events. They also refreshingly highlight stories that focus on the minority and female experience within the New England colonies. Each piece is prefaced by an editorial introduction to the topic. The stories range from five to 13 pages in length and are all by different authors and artists. This leads, as is often inevitable in anthologies, to an uneven quality among the tales. Fortunately, the editorial introductions and spotlights keep the narrative cohesive. Many of the entries would do well to be fleshed out more, and in some narratives, the personages aren't introduced well enough for the action to be clear. However, these instances are minor aberrations and do not detract from the overall book. The graphic novel format will entice reluctant readers who might not otherwise gravitate toward nonfiction, while the short story format will appeal to educators who want to emphasize a particular event or person in a classroom setting while whetting their students' appetites for more. The editorial introductions explain that the stories make use of racial terms that may be jarring to modern readers but are historically accurate. A section on slavery depicts some (appropriately portrayed) nudity. While this title could stand alone, it would be best paired with the first volume, Colonial Comics: New England, 1620–1750. VERDICT This quality work of nonfiction is a strong option for those studying American history.—Elizabeth Nicolai, Anchorage Public Library, AK

Lots of leeway taken with the actual facts in favor of a fun story. Might work to get young people interested in American history. Seems a cross between young adult book and adult book.

Colonial Comics: New England, 1750-1775 is an anthology of 18 historical comic stories that aims “to focus on the people and events that tend to get ignored in American history classes.” It’s an admirable goal, and one that succeeds, opening readers’ eyes to lesser-known but involving figures and events. Stories such as* “The Devil and Silence Dogood”, by J.L. Bell and Braden Lamb, humorously shows Benjamin Franklin’s early days as a printer’s devil (apprentice) and writer of satire* “A Lonely Line”, by Sarah Winifred Searle and Carey Pietsch, introduces Molly Ockett, a Native American and Maine legend known for her knowledge of medicine*“The Newport Riots”, by James Maddox and Rob Dumo, portrays the coming changes and public protest from the scared perspective of crown officials* “The Grand Illumination”, by Kevin Cooney and Matt Dembicki, illustrates how it’s possible to tweak authority while pretending to honor it in the light of the repeal of the Stamp Act* “The Stranger’s Corpse”, by J.L. Bell and Jesse Lonergan, tells of the first American casualty during the Boston Massacre* “The Spunker Club”, by Lora Innes, digresses from politics to look at the mishaps of a group of Harvard medical students trying to option a corpse for their studies* “Join, or Die!”, by Josh O’Neill and James Comey, sheds light on the first, best-known American political cartoonbring to life the period and make history come alive in a potent time of pending rebellion. Coincidentally, it’s a particularly timely period in analogy, as debates continue today around whose voice should count in determining the future and politics of the country. These stories encourage empathy with a variety of viewpoints, as we see and follow lives, whether humorous or tragic. Each story has a text introduction to put them into context and explain any background needed, which aids in comprehension and understanding why the story was selected. Additional spotlight pages add to the overall historical and regional picture.A final text piece explains how the book’s design was influenced by colonial newspapers, to emphasize how writers fought to influence public attitudes toward rebellion. It’s followed by a bibliography and creator biographies. The variety of comic styles emphasize straightforward figure work and storytelling. The range of tones means plenty of variety for readers, never knowing what they’ll discover next. Although second in the series, readers may find this volume more approachable, as the stories are more dynamic and relate to history they may be more familiar with.
