The title tells the story. Jesus the King Understanding the Life and Death of the Son of God. This is an in-depth look at the book of Mark. The Gospel of Mark is almost certainly the eye witness testimony of Peter, as written by his translator and secretary. Peter of course is one of the original twelve. In the book of Mark he identifies Jesus as king over all things and then discusses his purpose in dying. Keller who has written many Christian books has brought about some new thoughts and even a new fact or so. I did not know, although others I am sure did know that the darkness at Jesus time on the cross was three hours, from noon till three O'clock. The drama, the sadness and the sorrow of Jesus life and death is portrayed wonderfully by Timothy Keller. There is one teeny tiny thing in this book that bothered me. This story of Jesus is so BIG, that when Keller refers of Anne Rice, Tolkien, Fran Kafka, Emile Cailliet, Lisa Miller of Newsweek and Nanei Helmich, of USA Today. ..and numerous other writers I have to ponder,....... J.K. Rowling and even Solzhenitsyn? C S Lewis, Jonathan Edwards, Josephus, these did not make me pause. Probably just me.

One word. "Incredible"! I have never been an avid reader of any kind. This book was recommended to me and I have not put it down. I have never experienced Christ in this format and quite frankly never knew it could exist for me. Dr Keller explains the life and death of Christ so beautifully that allows for readers to feel like they are actually at the events that took place. This book is incredible and highly recommended. You want to know who Christ is, truly know? Add this book to your collection. You won't be disappointed.

Absolutely riveting book. It is not a light read and don't be concerned if it takes a day or two of meditation to really absorb a chapter. This book would make an outstanding small group Bible study. My daughter "loaned" me her book but I just couldn't stop underlining and writing revelations in the margin. So I bought her a new one and two more for dear friends. I've wept, sung praises to Jesus, and word-smithed words all through this book. If you are not sure about Jesus, read this book by a man who really knows Him personally. You might find that you are very glad you have become much better acquainted. I definitely am.

King's Cross is a study of the Gospel of Mark designed for both followers of Christ and would-be followers of Christ. Tim Keller's expertise is that he is always able to take a passage of Scripture and show how it's all about Jesus. The Bible is not about us, but always finds its purpose in every story in the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ. This work is not an exhaustive study of the Gospel of Mark, rather it highlights the two primary themes of Mark: Chapters 1-8 - Christ the King - highlighting His teachings, miracles, and authority as God ; and Chapters 9-16 - Christ the Servant - highlighting His sufferings that culminate in His death on the cross.Keller throughout this book manages to weave in and out how Jesus is the answer to all of the major questions, needs, and realities of life. This book is an excellent reminder for the Christian that all of life only makes sense with Jesus at the center of it. For the non-believer Keller makes a cogent case for the necessity of Christ in his or her life. King's Cross would be an excellent gift to give to college students, co-workers, friends, acquaintances, and family members who are unfamiliar with the main story lines of the Bible. The gospel in the life of Jesus is presented clearly, articulately, and compellingly in this concise presentation of Mark's Gospel. The Gospel of Mark gives more than just information about Jesus. It is the account of the person that every human being longs for. We all desperately need Jesus and Keller brilliantly shows us why. One cannot read this book without desiring to have a deeper connection with the Triune God through a personal and intimate relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.

Tim Keller’s excellent book “Jesus the King” is “an extended meditation” based upon a series he preached on the Gospel of Mark——a book he believes includes vital features of the Jesus narrative. This is not an exposition of the entire text of Mark, but rather an illumination of some of the more significant passages. Like the structure of the Gospel, the book is divided into two parts——the first half discusses the life of Jesus, while the second half discusses his death, resurrection and purpose. The writing style is accessible to the layperson, even those with little theological background. This is what Keller does so well, laying out an important subject in plain language for all, including new believers as well as unbelievers. This is a book you could give to just about anyone as a means of introducing that person to Jesus Christ. This book was a joy to read.

This book was recommended in a women's bible study group, and it seemed stuffy. However, when I started reading it, it really held my interest. I would recommend it for those wanting to delve more deeply into Mark's gospel, or for others who just want an engaging read.

Private detective Albert Campion celebrated Christmas. Who knew?Margery Allingham’s (1904-1966) fictional detective was famous during the Golden Age of Mystery, roughly the 1920s to the 1940s. He starred in 18 of her mystery novels and numerous short stories. Four of those stories have been collected and recently published as “Campion at Christmas.”“On Christmas Day in the Morning” poses a “locked room” kind of mystery, but without the locked room. A postman is found by the side of the road, the victim of a hit-and-run driver. A suspect is in custody, having crashed his car sometime later. But the old lady in a cottage some distance off the road received her daily mail – at the time the postman would have been killed.“Happy Christmas” finds a young couple named the Robinsons facing a guest-less Christmas. They’re rather well known for collecting Victoriana artifacts, and a living Victoriana artifact is in the flat at the top of their building – an aging lady whose heyday was the Victorian period. She’s becomes part of their neo-Victorian holiday celebration, but is everything really as it looks?“The Case of the Man with the Sack” involves Campion being invited to a country house celebration for Christmas. And it promises to be a rather tense, depressing affairs. Some valuable jewels are stolen, and it looks like Santa Claus is the thief. And “Word in Season” has Poins, the red setter belonging to Campion and his wife Amanda, pondering whether or not he should speak. Very few people know that dogs have the gift of human speech during the hour before midnight on Christmas Eve. Poins knows of both good and bad things that have happened to his canine friends when they exercised this ability. And a sharp disagreement (one can’t imagine Campion having a fight) between the Campions looks like it will force the dog’s hand, er, paw.Allingham began publishing in 1923 when she was only 19. But it was The Crime at Black Dudley in 1929 that established her as one of the best mystery writers of the era. That story introduced Campion, a private detective who has assumed his name because he’s actually a title in one of Britain’s leading aristocratic families. His “man” or butler, Magersfontein Lugg, a convicted felon who has seen the inside of prison, also contributed to Allingham’s success.“Campion at Christmas” is an easy, fast read (it can be read start to finish in less than an hour). It’s also rather a charming collection of stories, and a treat for those of us Campion fans who still enjoy the detective whom everyone usually overlooks.

A delightful quartet of Christmas short stories by Margery Allingham, each completely satisfying. Three feature the inimitable Albert Campion with one of these three including his dog as a major character. Christmas, Albert Campion, and a dog—how can you go wrong with that! The fourth (non-Campion) story draws you in and resolves beautifully and happily. A treat to read and reread. I received this book from NetGalley for an impartial review.

This contains 4 quite short stories, three of them featuring Mr. Campion. There is some sentimentality, but I enjoyed them all.

It was just OK.

Wish there were more.

There are four enjoyable Allingham Christmas short stories. The first is "On Christmas Day in the Morning". Campion is eating with the Chief Constable when the superintendent arrives to say that the postman had been killed by a car. The postman was riding his bicycle. There were no skid marks, but a little further on a police car had stopped a stolen car with drunk occupants. The only problem was that mail had been delivered to an old woman about a quarter mile further along the road. Campion goes with the Constable to visit the woman and figures out what has happened. In the second story, "Happy Christmas", and young couple find their friends weren't coming for Christmas at the last minute. They invite the elderly woman in the apartment upstairs to join them and end up having a lovely Victorian Christmas. The third story is "The Case of the Man with the Sack". Campion is invited by his friend Sheila to come for Christmas. On his way, Campion sees a man he saw sent to prison for robbery. At the house party is a wealthy couple (she made a big point of her diamonds all the time) with their son who gets upset when Sheila's friend is given the job of Santa Claus. When Campion takes a break to go to his room, he sees Santa Claus with a big bag . When he asks Santa what's in his bag, the man runs. Campion finds a clock he had seen earlier in the bag and realizes it was the man on the train. He goes back to the party; and when the guest claims her insured diamonds have been stolen and blames Sheila's friend, Campion shows up the real culprit. The last story is "Word in Season". Campion's wife, Amanda, was annoyed when he had put a nail through the house-wiring when hanging the mistletoe. He is kept company by his setter until his wife returns to the room, and all is happy again.

This is a collection of short stories, three of which feature Albert Campion. I really enjoyed both “On Christmas Day in the Morning”, and “The case of the Man with the Sack”. Both of these stories focus on Campions skill as a detective and observer of human nature.I felt pretty neutral about the other two stories in this collection. The third Campion story, “Word in Season”, was not a mystery, but consisted mostly of musings by Campions dog, who felt that the Campion’s domestic harmony was in danger. At the end, all is well. I didn’t hate it, but I certainly didn’t love it either. The other story in this collection, “Happy Christmas”, was really a “feel good” story about a young couples happy Christmas, brought about by inviting the lady upstairs to join them. These were very quick to read stories, and I doubt that the four stories together took much over an hour to read. They are certainly worth the time it takes to read them. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a free review copy.
