From the Inside Flap

From the inside flap:FROM CHAPTER 7 . . .“Archbishop Detherow,” Martin said, “I’m sure everyone in our network audience knows about all you’ve accomplished in your illustrious career, but let me summarize. You were originally the pastor of an evangelical megachurch, and you gained a wide following with your uncommon desire to unify people of all faiths. And then, after building your church into the largest religious gathering in the world, you left your pastorate at the peak of your success. Can you tell us why?”“I left my congregation because it became clear that God was calling me to a much broader ministry—one that reaches out to people of other faiths as well.”“By ‘other faiths,’ I presume you mean all Christian denominations,” Martin said.“Yes, I do mean Christians of any stripe,” the pastor replied. “But God is calling me to reach out even further. He has revealed to me that all people who worship a higher power are actually worshiping Him, whether they know it or not.”“Are you saying that Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims, and Christians all worship the same God?”Detherow beamed. “God is so big, so universal, so inscrutable, that no one should presume to understand the ways He reveals Himself. At heart, the paths to God are one and the same. The goal is to bring us into the universal oneness of all being.”“Pastor, what is your ultimate hope as archbishop of the United Council of World Religions?”“My hope is, with God’s help, to bring about unity among all religions. From the Back Cover

Who will usher in earth’s final days? Are we living in the end times? What if the players depicted in the book of Revelation were out in force today? And if they were, would you know how to recognize them?In Agents of the Apocalypse, noted prophecy expert Dr. David Jeremiah does what no Bible teacher has done before. He explores the book of Revelation through the lens of its major players: the exile, the martyrs, the 144,000, the two witnesses, the dragon, the beast from the earth, the beast from the sea, the Victor, the King, and the Judge.Skillfully crafted to engage both the heart and the mind, each chapter opens with an engaging, biblically based dramatization that brings prophecies to life as never before. As Dr. Jeremiah presents these agents in the context of their unique times and places in the end times, he weaves a rich tapestry of the temperaments, motives, and conspiracies that Scripture tells us will precipitate earth’s final days. Then, in each chapter, Dr. Jeremiah provides a detailed study called “The Scripture behind the Story,” which explores some of Revelation’s most cryptic passages, explaining how to interpret them and―most important―how they apply to the malevolent forces at play in the world today. The stage is set, and the curtain is about to rise on earth’s final act. Will you be ready? From the inside flap:FROM CHAPTER 7 . . . “Archbishop Detherow,” Martin said, “I’m sure everyone in our network audience knows about all you’ve accomplished in your illustrious career, but let me summarize. No idea myself if it was a good book because given as a gift. Just was told that it was a good book by the recipient.

Dr. Jeremiah has presented a book that focuses on the main players in the book of Revelation. The key players or events are the apostle John in exile on Patmos, the martyrs, the 144,000 Jewish witnesses, the two witnesses, the dragon, the beast from the earth, the beast from the sea, the Victor, and the Judge. Each one is described through a scripturally based narrative and explained afterwards through scripture. This book is not a comprehensive study of the book of Revelation, but a highlight. The narratives each bring forth engaging characters and interesting storylines based on the scripture subject. Each narrative is independent of the other, with the common thread of the books subjects. I wasn't sure how I felt about the book at first, because I hadn't thought about the narrative aspect of it when I started to read it. I still am a little ambivalent towards them, but I do believe that many people will like this aspect of the book. I was glad to see exposition of the stories with scripture. We know that that any fiction is just that, but it is nice to see good explanations of scripture alongside the narratives. This dual look at Revelation is a new perspective as opposed to only one or the other. Overall, I would recommend this book, especially to those who have more difficulty understanding the book of Revelation. If someone wanted to do an in depth study of the whole book of Revelation, this book wouldn't be it, but it has a place in supplementing an in-depth study.I received this book from the publisher. I was not required to give a positive review. All ideas are my own.

I was not expecting much out of this book, I figured that it would just be another story about the Apocalypse. Boy was I wrong! It was so much more than that. It did have a fictional character base, but the difference is Dr Jeremiah related everything back to the book of Revelation. He explained it all in away that it made since. In The Left Behind series (do not get me wrong I loved that series and read every book) you were given a story with fictional characters and they told the story of what happens after Jesus comes back for His people. I did not get the impact that I did in reading the Agents of the Apocalypse. I could not put the book down. It really made me think am I really doing what is expected of me. I do not doubt my salvation but I do question am I doing all I can for the Kingdom of God. You will not be sorry you purchased this book. It can only make you think.

Let me make something very clear. I know that everyone has their own opinion regarding the end times and the order of events that take place. There have been numerous books written on the subject and I realize this is just one authors opinion but he gives very compelling arguments and explanations of how the end times could play out and backs up each argument with scripture references. This is one of the few books that I've read multiple times and I get more out of it with each reading.Actually, I think it's the only book I've read multiple times. It is very well written.

This is an excellent book, as all of Dr Jeremiah’s books are. I wasn’t too sure how I would feel about using fictionalized accounts to demonstrate personalities and events of the Tribulation. However, my doubts were quickly satisfied. The fictionalized accounts proved to be a perfect way to demonstrate just how complicated concepts could play out. I strongly recommend this book.

Sadly my sweet little right year old granddaughter was recently killed in a terrible accident. I am a Christian, and a friend of mine who lives far away called me today. We talked for an hour. She recommended that I purchase your book. I ordered as soon as our call was over and I spent all afternoon reading it. I loved reading it and be reminded that when this life is over it's not the end, it's just the beginning.

A telling of The Revelation, using a style that should be helpful to someone who is not a Bible scholar. Very similar to the Left Behind series in that it uses a story format to help the reader understand the scripture. I did not agree with everything I read, perhaps 95%. It has intrigued me to do some further study on that 5%, which is the millennial period, Jesus' thousand year reign before Satan is unleashed once again.

David Jeremiah is such a gifted preacher who isn't afraid to tackle those biblical subjects most pastors avoid. The Biblical evidence to give us a "taste of heaven" is overwhelming. I do not understand why pastors don't teach these truths so as to give us more confidence and also motivate us to share the Good News.

When it says 'a Riveting Look at the Key Players of the End Times', they were not kidding. I heard the sermon series on the radio show, and the book was as compelling. It fills in the details that were too plentiful to broadcast, and makes me more hopeful for the future. Strangely enough, there is no mention of Mystery, Babylon the Great (?), but the rest was very informative, and I'm saying this as one who has studied Revelation and the End Times for at least three decades. One warning: The section on The Great White Throne chilled me to the marrow.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of September 2018: Based on the real-life experiences of Holocaust survivor Ludwig (Lale) Sokolov, author Heather Morris’s novel is a testament to the human spirit and the power of love to bloom in even the darkest places. And it’s hard to imagine a place darker than the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camps. In 1942, Lale is rounded up with other Slovakian Jews and sent to Auschwitz. Once there, he is given the job of tätowierer, inking numbers into the arms of frightened prisoners at a sickening rate. One of these prisoners is a young woman named Gita--and in spite of their plight, they fall in love. Lale’s position as the tätowierer gives him privileges but does not shield him from the brutality of the camps. Time and again he risks his life to help his fellow prisoners, and my heart was in my throat at the chances he took for Gita and others. Despite the passing of years and the ever present threat of death, Lale and Gita never stop believing in a future together where they can live as husband and wife. The Tattooist of Auschwitz is a beautiful and life-affirming novel. Thinking about it still brings tears to my eyes and warmth to my heart. —Seira Wilson, Amazon Book Review

Review

“Based on a true story, the wrenching yet riveting tale of Lale’s determination to survive the camp with Gita is a moving testament to the power of kindness, ingenuity, and hope.”   (People)“Like the Nobel Prize-winning author Elie Wiesel’s Night, Morris’ work takes us inside the day-to-day workings of the most notorious German death camp. Over the course of three years, Morris interviewed Lale, teasing out his memories and weaving them into her heart-rending narrative of a Jew whose unlikely forced occupation as a tattooist put him in a position to act with kindness and humanity in a place where both were nearly extinct.” (BookPage)“The Tattooist of Auschwitz is the story of hope and survival against incredible odds and the power of love.” (Popsugar)“The Tattooist of Auschwitz is an extraordinary document.. I find it hard to imagine anyone who would not be drawn in, confronted and moved. I would recommend it unreservedly to anyone, whether they’d read a hundred Holocaust stories or none.” (Graeme Simsion, internationally-bestselling author of The Rosie Project)“What an extraordinary and important book this is. We need as many memories of the Holocaust as we can retain, and this is a moving and ultimately uplifting story of love, loyalties and friendship amidst the horrors of war.” (International bestseller Jill Mansell)“As many interviews as I did with Holocaust survivors for the Shoah Foundation and as many devastating testimonies as I heard, I could not stop reading THE TATTOOIST OF AUSCHWITZ—an extraordinary story of love so fierce it sustained people enduring the unimaginable. Read it, share it, remember it.” (Jenna Blum, NYT and international bestselling author of Those Who Save Us and The Lost Family )“To many, this book will be most appreciated for its powerful evocation of the everyday horrors of life as a prisoner in a concentration camp, while others will be heartened by the novel’s message of how true love can transcend even the most hellishly inhuman environments. This is a perfect novel for book clubs and readers of historical fiction.” (Publishers Weekly)“..this is a powerful, gut-wrenching tale that is hard to shake off.” (Kirkus Reviews)“Although one might suspect that there’s far more to his past than is revealed here, much of Lale’s story’s complexity makes it onto the page. And even though it’s clear that Lale will survive, Morris imbues the novel with remarkable suspense.”   (Booklist)

I had to order ‘The Tattooist of Auschwitz’ from a bookseller in the UK, as it will not be released in the US until September. It finally arrived to my home in Washington state a few days ago. After reading such incredible reviews, I couldn’t wait to be lost in its pages, so added it to my suitcase as I packed for work (I am a flight attendant). I didn’t have a chance to read it during my layover, but started it late last night on my redeye flight across the Pacific. I read it cover to cover in the five hours it took to fly from Maui to home, only pausing to wipe my tears on my apron and to pour sodas for the few people who weren’t sleeping in their seats.I have read so many stories of this time, some good and some not so, some acclaimed and some relatively unknown. The Tattooist of Aushwitz is by far the best. Heather’s ability to make written words come to life is a true gift. This is one of those books that I will carry in my soul forever.

Read The Tatooist of Auschwitz in the days before and after I visited Aucshwitz and Birkenau. There are times you read books for entertainment and times you read for knowledge. This may be a bit of both because it involves a love story too - Lale and Gita. But oh, the horror of their situation.Going with my usual format...Is it worth the cost? $7.99 - yes, absolutetly. Is it a page turner?Yes, it is. Ordinarily, I would argue that this kind of book does not need to be a page turner because that's not the point... but it is.Did I think about this book when I was not reading this book? Not at first, I was able to put it down for a week and go on with my trip. But as I got further involved, I found myself thinking about Lale's story more and more and wanted to get back to the book. Will I think about this book once I am finished?Lale's story stays with you. As mentioned above, I actually visited Auschwitz while reading this book. On display are many photos of prisoners arriving, prisoners on their way to be gassed, murdered prisoners, starving prisoners. Frankly I could not look - it was too hard to put a face to such horrors. For me, this book gave a name to the millions of people who perished at Auschwitz and who lived too.

Immediately reading the first few pages of this book, I was dismayed and increasingly skeptical of its written quality. While the real lives depicted in this story deserve awe and merit for their survival of such a catastrophic period, the portrayal of the story lacks depth.I was surprised to see so many positive reviews! A few others have been able to concisely pinpoint the problem with the writing - mainly the book is a narrative shell that primarily glosses over the struggle of surviving such dire circumstances to focus on a love plot with little dimension. Elementary prose and cheesy one-liners dominate this novel. At the very least, I appreciate the attempt to bring light to such a unique, real-life love story....

This book was designated as our book club's next read and though I was excited to read it, as I had read several good reviews, I kept putting it off as I felt that I knew, to some level, the horror of the subject-matter. Hence as I started to read it I was very uncomfortable, but as the book progressed I felt it a compelling read into the reality of human nature. I gave it five stars rather than four, as I felt four stars did not do it justice.

a holocaust book must be truly poorly written in order for it to deserve one star, but this manages to accomplish just that. this had almost no flow to it, was written on an elementary school level (with some curse words forced in), made auschwitz seem somewhat tolerable, and built little to no drama on some pretty amazing events. of all of the WW2 books that i have read, this ranks with the weakest. i couldn’t wait to finish it so that i could be done with the poor writing. sorry.

Absolutely loved it. What a wonderful, miraculous story of love and perseverance in amongst the horror and devastation of Auschwitz. For it to be true is just amazing, and shows the true strength of humans. Thank you to the late author for sharing this with the world.

A full 5 stars for this flowing factual literary work which “brings” Lale and Gita’s heart rendering love story into a pragmatic realistic accountable unputdownable read. The abhorrent disgrace and disgust of the holocaust cries out “lest we never forget”, which our retribution portrays in these stories being retold and remembered from generation to generation. The Jews will proudly survive and our voices will be heard in unity. My husband and I have walked through Auschwitz and Birkenau - a chilling icy tour of a deathly historical event in history which is incomprehensible albeit remembered.

Loved this book, was a true and honest account of one man's survial in difficult and simply awful circumstances.Everyone should read this book, it will definitely open your eyes to this man's story finding love in a horrific concentration camp, and how he helped so many survive what was one of the most terrible concentration camps ever built, Read it you won't put it down.

Review

PRAISE FOR THE MARK OF ATHENA"With his now-trademark zero-to-60 acceleration, the author engineers a ghostly possession to set Greeks and Romans at odds and initiates the Prophecy of the Seven, hurtling Annabeth, Percy, Piper, Leo, Hazel, Frank and Jason into a pell-mell flight on the magical trireme Argo II. Here, Riordan's infectious love for his subject matter really comes through, even as he takes some real risks with his characters. A literal cliffhanger leaves eager readers hanging; next stop: Greece-and Tartarus."―Kirkus ReviewsPRAISE FOR THE MARK OF ATHENA"Terrifying dreams and enigmatic prophecies mean danger for seven teen demigods, but also good times for fans of The Heroes of Olympus series. This third volume thrusts Percy, Jason, Annabeth, Hazel, Leo, Frank, and Piper into action once again. Throughout the novel, the juxtaposition of humor and terror makes both aspects of the writing more vivid. The demigods use their wits and their weapons skillfully in a string of encounters, and their insecurities make the characters all the more appealing. With a true storyteller's sense of pacing, Riordan creates another compelling adventure, right down to the cliff-hanger at the end. Stay tuned for volume four."―Booklist Online

This was a Christmas present for a friend's grand daughter and the kid loved it which is cool, and appreciated getting it from her "Aunt" Gena, which made me feel good. It was on the top of her list of books she would like to have.

Reading this book series is starting to feel a lot like coming home. A really brutal, terrifying home, what with all of the monsters and war and whatnot, but home nonetheless.Riordan continues to blow me away with these books and I'm really not sure what I'm going to do when I finish this series. But luckily for me, I have almost a thousand pages before I need to worry about that. However, I digress, let's move on to the good stuff! This book! Ahhhhhh!!!!! That covers it pretty accurately. The Percabeth reunion! Perfection. It was done in true Percabeth form. "Hi, sweetheart, I'm sorry I went missing for six months after a nutty goddess stole my memory. Give me a kiss and then we'll go stop the vicious goddess of Earth from rising." I mean, what else did I expect?Coach Hedge. I freaking love Coach Hedge; he's the perfect non chaperone chaperone to have on the "Argo II."I loved seeing the "Big Seven" together for the first time (even if it wasn't the great first meeting) and I really enjoyed watching them grow as a team as the book went on.I love each of the "Big Seven" but seriously, how can anyone not love Leo Valdez? The part with Leo and Echo and Narcissus had me laughing out loud. Oh goodness. Such a great moment. The performing giants! Glad to see that the monsters are broadening their horizons a bit. Killing demigods just doesn't pay the bills, you know.Annabeth is such a boss! I was literally cheering for her when she was on her journey, and she came out victorious! (Kind of, but we'll get to that in a minute.)Thank you, Rick Riordan, for writing a kick butt female heroine that is smart, strong, and brave. I love that Annabeth was/is kind of the leader of the team; everyone looks to her because of her wisdom and knowledge. The feminist in me did a fist pump for that.Ok, that freaking cliff hanger. What the what?! Rick! How could you do that to my babies? Ugh. I knew it was coming, but it was like my stomach dropped down with them. This book was phenomenal! I'm loving this adventure with the gang, no matter how hazardous it is to my emotional health. :o)Onward to the next one!

If you have a reluctant reader, maybe you just need the right material! My 10 year old son is now at an 8th grade reading level (from 4th grade level at the beginning of this school year) thanks to Rick Riordan books!)Riordan has created another great book series that has sparked the LOVE of reading in my child and it's priceless to me! I will buy anything he writes to keep my 10 year old son engaged in reading for the love of it. I love this author's work with all of my heart. If I ever meet Rick Riordan in person, I'm going to shake his hand and thank him for writing outstanding books LOVED by my son. I'll of course ask for an autograph in one of books too! (OR "Please take a sharpie to this Kindle cover! You're THE MAN!")This school year, my son has become highly competitive by earning AR points in school (Accelerated Reader points). There's a donut party kids may attend if they achieve 100 AR Points in a semester. He's going to easily reach this goal since he's tearing through these books!!! Do I love that my boy WANTS to be a super reader?!! Yes, of course!!! I am in two book clubs, and I was bitten by the book bug at that age, and I could not be happier! This momma is really, really happy! I may even have to start reading these to see what all the fuss is about. I enjoy reading young adult books sometimes. I'll just borrow my sons books when he's done.:)

My son absolutely loves this series. Keep writing and he will keep reading!Annabeth is terrified. Just when she's about to be reunited with Percy—after six months of being apart, thanks to Hera—it looks like Camp Jupiter is preparing for war. As Annabeth and her friends Jason, Piper, and Leo fly in on the Argo II, she can't blame the Roman demigods for thinking the ship is a Greek weapon. With its steaming bronze dragon masthead, Leo's fantastical creation doesn't appear friendly. Annabeth hopes that the sight of their praetor Jason on deck will reassure the Romans that the visitors from Camp Half-Blood are coming in peace. And that's only one of her worries. In her pocket Annabeth carries a gift from her mother that came with an unnerving demand: Follow the Mark of Athena. Avenge me. Annabeth already feels weighed down by the prophecy that will send seven demigods on a quest to find—and close— the Doors of Death. What more does Athena want from her?Annabeth's biggest fear, though, is that Percy might have changed. What if he's now attached to Roman ways? Does he still need his old friends? As the daughter of the goddess of war and wisdom, Annabeth knows she was born to be a leader, but never again does she want to be without Seaweed Brain by her side.Narrated by four different demigods, The Mark of Athena is an unforgettable journey across land and sea to Rome, where important discoveries, surprising sacrifices, and unspeakable horrors await. Climb aboard the Argo II, if you dare…

From Booklist

*Starred Review* In The Tenth Parallel (2010), Griswold offered keen geopolitical insight by cataloging ongoing religious strife in contentious locales, including Indonesia, Nigeria, and Sudan. Here, the globetrotting Griswold recruits renowned photographer Seamus Murphy to provide the visuals, and turns her attention to Afghanistan in order to record a collection of landays, Afghani folk poems, typically sung by women in private. With the help of local guides and Pashto translators, Griswold convinces women to share couplets that touch on a wide range of emotions and themes, from love and grief to separation and war. Because the lyrics remain anonymous over generations, Afghan women use them to express freely their desires and frustrations, yet still risk violating Taliban strictures against song and dance. From heartbreaking indictments of fathers who sell their daughters into slavery to humorous, techno-savvy posts on a Pashto Landay Facebook page, Griswold’s selections illustrate the rich potential of this poetic form, at once contemporary and timeless. Murphy’s stunning photographs complement the text perfectly, capturing children at play in refugee camps outside Kabul, smiling U.S. soldiers pointing squirt guns, and armed militants marching through the mountains. A timely, indispensable, and unforgettable poetic documentary. --Diego Báez

Review

“Griswold's translations mark a stunning handling of [landay's] complex 'beauty, bawdiness, and wit.' Flanked by Murphy's photographs, with their striking blend of wartime journalism and human compassion, Griswold's couplets are peppered with brief prose passages in which she delves into cultural and historical traditions that inform the humor and gravity of her translations . . . a collection that may indeed be remembered as a groundbreaking work of translation and poetic journalism.” ―Publishers Weekly“Eliza Griswold and Seamus Murphy have made a book that is necessary reading for anyone who has ever made assumptions from a distance about what a burka-wearing woman might be like, and for anyone who cannot fathom how poetry could get you killed. In other words, this book is a must-read for every U.S. citizen . . . Griswold's and Murphy's work might be a crucial turning point in the education of Americans about the real world and the place of poetry in it.” ―Daniel Bosch, The Daily Beast“The book's greatest strength is the complicated spectrum of voices that it allows these women, whom we wouldn't otherwise know anything about. I Am the Beggar of the World casts Pashtun women as vibrantly self-aware and autonomous . . . Griswold finds a way to present these poems and images in juxtaposition so that they evoke a multiplicity of voices and views, giving an almost democratic quality to the anthology's populace.” ―Jay Deshpande, The Millions“*Starred review* "From heartbreaking indictments of fathers who sell their daughters into slavery to humorous, techno-savvy posts on a Pashto Landay Facebook page, Griswold's selections illustrate the rich potential of this poetic form, at once contemporary and timeless. Murphy's stunning photographs complement the text perfectly, capturing children at play in refugee camps outside Kabul, smiling U.S. soldiers pointing squirt guns, and armed militants marching through the mountains. A timely, indispensable, and unforgettable poetic documentary.” ―Diego Báez, Booklist“I Am the Beggar of the World, translated by journalist and poet Eliza Griswold, with photos by Seamus Murphy, collects passionate, polemical, and traditionally secret two-line folk poems by Pashtun women on topics ranging from education, war, and personal autonomy to marriage, faith, loss, and homeland.” ―Elle“I Am the Beggar of the World is a great and satisfying work. I applaud Eliza Griswold and Seamus Murphy. It is an essential look at the women of Afghanistan and the voices of dissent at risk of being suppressed when the American forces withdraw.” ―Sahera Sharif, Member of Afghanistan’s Parliament, founder of nationwide women’s literary circle, Mirman Baheer“The poems in I Am the Beggar of the World cut like a knife-they are short, sharp-and leave you bleeding. They are the most direct voices of the inner life of Afghan women, and prove that these women, despite all hardships, are still standing. These two-liners make the reader feel close to the women that we've seen so often on the screen wandering like blue-clad ghosts on the dusty roadsides. A heart is a heart anywhere in the world.” ―Åsne Seierstad, author of The Bookseller of Kabul“I Am the Beggar of the World is a revelatory book about Afghanistan, one sure to turn all the stereotypes about the country's women on their heads. The poems, equally art and reportage, are often poignant, more often witty, even pungent. They, along with the accompanying text and photographs, illuminate the beauty of the country and its culture, the sadness of its history, and the humor, the hopes, the bitterness, and even the contradictions its women-no different than women anywhere-carry in their hearts. This is an important book, but to describe it only that way is to neglect how deeply pleasurable it is to read.” ―Amy Waldman, author of The Submission“Eliza Griswold brings a poet's sensibility, a folklorist's skills, and a journalist's savvy to these startling and incendiary folk poems by Afghan women, which she has so daringly collected and translated. With its arresting photographs and heartbreaking two-liners, I Am the Beggar of the World enlarges our sense of the work that poetry does in the world.” ―Edward Hirsch, author of The Living Fire“This is poetry of a rural tradition that is as world-wise, war-wise and uniquely sophisticated as any collection of writing by women, anywhere.” ―Carol Muske-Dukes, author of Twin Cities

This is a terrific collection of poems from women whose work is rarely noted. I'm an avid fan of the works by Middle Eastern women and teach a course on this literature at my university. There is an amazing body of work from the women of this region.

The landays and women who wrote them are enlightening and inspiring. I went to a reading by Eliza Griswold and was so moved by the amazing prose these women have created and the lengths they go to in order to share them with each other, often risking their lives. It's devastating how these women and their voices are oppressed by the Taliban. Hearing these poems makes a great case for funding more education for girls in Afghanistan and other Taliban-run areas.

Beautiful, moving and mesmerizing language. Courageous research. Stunning, haunting photographs. A work of great beauty. A book to read and re read over and over again.

Womens' oral poetry from Afghanistan--The explanatory sections weren't quite as seamless as I would have liked--Although they were necessary for understanding the Landays

Real, alive and full of spirit and hope. It gave me a much better understanding of what the lives of these women are like.

a stunning, intriguing book - highly recommended

An interesting and haunting book.

I liked it so much that I bought a second copy for a friend.

FINAL DECISION: Felt more like historical women's fiction than romance. I enjoyed the story of Eva's fight to be recognized for her architectural talents, but I really didn't think the romance was exciting or interesting.THE STORY: Lady Eva Hyde has three dead fiances and a father who no longer can do his work. When Eva gets the opportunity to pretend to be her father in order to be an architect on a project in New York, Eva leaps on the opportunity. On the trip across the Atlantic, Eva succumbs to passion with a stranger and then flees. She is horrified when he arrives in New York and realizes that her stranger is Phillip Mansfield, who happens to be her employer. Eva continues to pretend that her father is in charge of the project and she is there to execute his will. The antagonism from others about her working on the project, threaten Eva's desire to establish herself as a professional.OPINION: I've really enjoyed Shupes Guilded Age books, but this one was a big miss for me. While I was really interested in Eva's professional journey, I didn't like the romance at all. In fact, I sympathized with Phillip through the entire book and really thought he should dump Eva to find a better woman. This book felt like a historical woman's fiction book focused on Eva remaking her life. But she felt selfish and self-centered to me. She lies about who is the architect and then has the nerve to be annoyed at Phillip when he is almost destroyed by her deception. While there is a pro forma "making up" on her part, I never felt that she put her relationship with Phillip over her own ambitions. She lies to him, keeps him at a distance, and basically treats him as beneath her dreams.I didn't like her treatment of him, couldn't understand his willingness to deal with her unless he has no self-respect himself. I want my romances to be about the relationship over all and this book doesn't come close to meeting that standard. The book is well written for what it is and I am sure that readers looking for a woman's journey to fight prejudice to be a trailblazer will find something good in this story, but I prefer my romances to be about romance.WORTH MENTIONING: This book takes place during the Gilded Age.CONNECTED BOOKS: A SCANDALOUS DEAL is the second book in the Four Hundred series. While there are small appearances by characters from the prior book, this book is a complete standalone.STAR RATING: I give this book 2 stars.NOTE: I received an ARC of this book via Edelweiss in order to prepare this review. I was not required to write a review or to write a positive review. All opinions contained herein are my own.

Once again Joanna Shupe takes us back to the growth and development of New York City reflected in the era of the Gilded Age. She does so through the wonderful main characters of Lady Eva Hyde and Mr. Philip Mansfield.Lady Eva is the daughter of well-known and respected British architect E.M. Hyde, Lord Cassell. Eva is, however, a talented architect in her own right. It's just that the world does not know this, because, although she has learned the art and science of architecture at the side of her talented father, she is a woman and society does not readily accept a woman who wants to work in a 'man's' field (or any other in truth); or who does not fall into the conventional picture of womanhood. Also, Lord Cassell is ill and because he has been a terrible money manager Eva must pass his work off as her own, and therefore hide his illness (dementia) from the world.Lady Eva is on her way to NYC to work for Mr. Philip Mansfield who is a wealthy and successful businessman who is using his money to develop the business world of the city by building a modern hotel designed by Lord Cassell. At least, he believes it has been designed by him. In reality it is all Eva's work. The story begins with an ocean crossing carrying Eva and Philip to NYC. The meeting of these two people on the ocean-liner is a charming part of the novel. However, the re-meeting of these two people as they find themselves revealed as who they really are is more than disconcerting for them, especially when Philip realizes that the woman who intrigued him at sea is none other the woman who will be Lord Cassell's representative for his hotel. And when Eva remembers herself in Philip's arms as they lived through an evening of rough seas eased by lots of champagne, and buffeted by laughing and lovely emotions. Now they have to set their initial meeting aside, and work together. The story continues to unfold as the hotel building continues. As has been mentioned the issues reflected in the story are quite familiar for people today: a woman dealing with men who don't respect her intelligence and abilities, a man who isn't sure how he feels about a woman seeking work equality, and respect between the genders. The secondary characters in the novel are also well-developed. They add nice layers to the story. Philip's mother, Ellen, is an intriguing character, as is Philip's lawyer, and his friend, Rebecca Hall.Often in historical novels that include romance there are deceptions that must be overcome. This is definitely true in this story. Some people have balked at his aspect of the story on the part of Lady Eva, because the deceptions all rest on her shoulders. However, the reader has to ask if there are realistically any other ways she could have handled her situations and issues, and also remain a viable part of the work she came to NYC to accomplish. Not to mention the income that she needs from this work. These deceptions, however, do need resolution, and forgiveness and understanding on the part of Philip Mansfield. The question is whether or not he can find it within himself to find this forgiveness and understanding of Eva's life situations and difficulties. There is a lot of historical content in this novel. A few reviewers have said they feel this 'history' overtakes the romance of the story. This wasn't the case for me. In fact, I find that these historical features and facts make the story more realistic to the era of the novel, and to the characters. It also reinforces the idea that past history remains relevant to issues of our own day.

The excellent second book in Shupe's Four Hundred series gets off to an intriguing start with a sexy shipboard encounter with a stranger. The architect heroine, who is determined to be taken seriously, runs into trouble when her shipboard lover turns out to be her new boss. As always, I'm in love with the Gilded Age setting of this series. There's also a dash of mystery when accidents start occurring at the construction site. I loved the architecture details and New York setting. Another winner! I loved it.

Review

"There is excellent balance of theoretical and practical content. The textbook I used did not have enough practical content and that was the reason I stopped using it. This book is an excellent reference resource in addition to being an excellent textbook. The appendixes are awesome, especially appendix B (Paralegal Associations, Bar Associations that Allow Paralegal Membership, and Related Organizations)which is an excellent reference tool for paralegal students. I emphasize legal research and legal writing in all four of my classes, and the research and writing sections of this book are excellent. It is challenging to teach the skills of legal research and writing to my web students because I cannot take them to the university law library, as I do with my traditional classroom students. This book's sections on legal research and writing are so well organized easy to understand that even distance-learning students can use it to independently practice those skill sets. Each chapter summary really captures the most important aspects of the preceding chapter, and the review questions at the end of each chapter further focuses the reader with regard to the most important chapter content. The exhibits are also awesome - especially exhibit 2.3 (General Observations about Paralegal Work in Different Kinds of Law Offices).""Statsky's text provides essential vocabulary, but focuses more on understanding concepts behind the vocabulary and learning critical-thinking skills. Statsky also provides a lesser, more appropriate, level of information about a much broader range of legal specialties than Currier & Eimermann. Statsky's tone is much more readable and encourages learning over memorizing. The "'Assignments"' are fantastic and can be easily be developed further by instructors. Examples are numerous and make the material much easier to understand. I love the emphasis on practical skills and the paralegal's role in everything."

This is a standard college paralegal text book. It is very comprehensive and detailed. There is a huge amount of information in this text. It is almost 900 pages with small print. It takes a long time to complete a chapter. However, it is easy to understand and it comes with a DVD full of questions to take at the end of each chapter to measure how much you retained and it will give you a grade in percentage points. If you are interested in going into the paralegal business, then this is an excellent book to give a good introduction to the field.

This book is something great for those of us who need a little help!I've always had a hearing issue that made classes extremely hard for me, listening to the teacher always ended with me lost and confused since I would be trying so hard to hear them that I couldn't focus on what they were saying.I got this book for my intro to paralegal class and I'm keeping it, Statsky goes into detail about everything, in a easy to read sort of way. though the print is small and a section of the book is cut out and put 300 pages ahead, I didn't feel lost at all. If a new addition comes out I will be sure to buy it!

Excellent product!! But if your looking for a text book supplement for a college course it may not be your best choice. Most of the information that is in your standard college books is in there (most of it) but this book focuses more on duties and requirements for paralegals.

Whoever inspected this book sucks at life...The pages were falling off the cover ! Really really bad condition... Why? Why?

Extremely thorough book. Glad I had it to help me understand the concepts in my class. I rented it, but will end up buying it as it has so much more information than I could possibly remember and I'll use it as a reference.

This is a great book to have when you are beginning classes in paralegal.

I just love the book Introduction to Paralegalism.... by Willima P Statsky! It contains lots of updated information that I was looking for. I might even consider using it to take a paralegal certification examination.

I have been a legal assistant/paralegal for 14 years, but am just now obtaining official certification. The information contained in this book has been valuable in helping me improve my organizational skills, learn about additional opportunities available for paralegals, acquire bits and pieces of details of the profession I didn't already have, and gain a solid foundation on which I can be confident in the future. It provides details in an informative, yet interesting manner and provides outside sources of information and support. I think it would be a wonderful tool for someone just starting out in the legal field or for someone who has had years of experience but would like to expand their knowledge or attempt to develop a career that is outside the norm. I am very much enjoying and appreciating this book.

absolutely loved it. we are a Christian family trying to raise our little ones with good morals and faith. this book not only captures an identity to who my granddaughters looks like, but the story is very sweet.

The illustrations in this book are so beautiful & precious. I ordered this for my baby girl & for such a great price, i am so happy i did. She is only 1 , but the images capture her attention, turning pages, & allowing me to read her the story. Love it.

I loved this book more than fifty years ago when I was quite small. I would say it impacted me for life--helped me to know that God was love, but God was also a mystery to be in awe of. I've bought countless copies as baby and shower gifts.

I vividly recall this book from my own childhood, and I'm past 50. Feeds a child's spiritual longings with knowledge of God's love with gentle, though awesome (I mean that in the true sense of the word--the only way I use that word) manner.

I used to read this same Golden Book to my children, so much that I actually have most of the book memorized. We bought this for our granddaughter who will hear an amazing story about God just like her mom did.

I love this timeless book on prayer. The reader can tailer the words to match a specific belief system. The illustrations are sweet, innocent, and have a lasting impact. I still remember this book from when I was around 4 or 5.

I had this book when I was a kid and wanted to order one for my two and three year old! It brought back a lot of memories. I wished though that I would have waited until they are a little older, they are still a little bit young to enjoy it like I did. I recommend this book for ages 6 and up.

This Golden Book does a lovey job relating God to the natural world around a child. The illustrations are, clear, colorful, gentle in expression, and engrossing to a child. The book does not identify with any specific religion. I would recommend it to any child .
