June 15, 2013Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis graphic novel attempts to tell the history of the quest for the foundations of mathematical logic, as epitomized through the life and career of Bertrand Russell. It explores the vigorous (and ultimately futile) efforts of philosophers to find a firm basis for irrevocable truth, as built on the foundations of mathematics. A subsidiary theme is the peculiar relationship between such efforts and "madness" (as we used to call it), as indicated by the several individuals engaged in these efforts who teetered on the borders of sanity. Russell is central to the story -- indeed the novel purports to portray his boyhood, adolescence, early career, first marriage, and publication (with Alfred North Whitehead) of "Principia Mathematica." His intellectual encounters with Ludwig Wittgenstein are portrayed, as are fictionalized (i.e., entirely made- up) encounters with Georg Cantor, Gottlob Frege, David Hilbert, and Kurt GÃ¶del. An extended appendix provides introductions to the historical figures alluded to in the graphics, along with summaries of such terms and topics as "algorithm," "predicate calculus," "Vienna Circle," and "Russell's paradox.""Logicomix" is an ambitious and inventive work that has brought arcane aspects of mathematical logic and intellectual history to a new audience. The work brims with ideas, passion, and drama. I found the graphics skillfully done, the only flaw being the somewhat wooden and repetitious portrayals of people. Imaginative portrayals abound, all in full color, and sometimes with a single scene filling an entire page.Despite this book's ambitions, as a one-time philosophy major and a long- term admirer of Bertrand Russell, I cannot wholeheartedly share the great enthusiasm of many other readers. (Of more than 140 reviews at Amazon, only three rate it below 3 stars). First, I found the book's dealings with philosophy to be superficial - less than one would get in a freshman- level college lecture. Second, the authors repeatedly interject themselves into the story with cartoon panels full of argumentative dialogue and (oftimes) peripheral trivia. Personally, I found the device distracting and annoying.Third, contrary to many reviewers, this is not a biography of Russell. Its portrayal of Russell's life is full of outright inventions that bear no relationship to reality. In contrast to the account in "Logicomix", the newly orphaned baby Bertrand Russell was not deposited all alone at his grandparents' house; he moved there along with his older brother. His grandfather was not a spry gentleman who danced in his garden, but a frail, wheelchair bound man of 83. His grandfather did not introduce the boy to his library, leading young Bertie to resolve to return and investigate the locked cabinet of forbidden books - after all, Bertie was only three when he came to live with his grandparents, and his grandfather died when he was six. It was not a tutor who introduced Russell to Euclid's theorems, but his own brother Frank, also living at the estate. And then there's the running theme of the strange howlings that emanate from the attic, disturbing Russell's sleep for years -- these are revealed to emanate from an insane uncle who lives therein. This is a wholesale invention that owes more to Jane Eyre than to reality. There was no uncle in the attic, nor did the young Bertrand ever hear or imagine ghostly howlings. Why the authors felt inclined to invent such stories is hard to imagine. All of the chapters abound with inventions likely to mislead the reader into thinking them factual.In the afterword to the book, the authors cheerfully admit to having invented "deviations from fact," insisting that their work be regarded as a "graphic novel" rather than a work of history. In their defense, one could argue that the invented encounters between Russell and other historical figures (e.g. Cantor, Frege, and GÃ¶del) reflect actual encounters of the protagonist with their written ideas. One might even stretch the point and argue that the fictional boyhood they invent for Russell represents his later memories of a lonely boyhood and his adult fears of the possibility of insanity. Personally, I wish the book authors had not felt compelled to invent a fictionalized life for the protagonist. Russell is after all one of the 20th century's most interesting historical figures. The version of Russell's life portrayed will undoubtedly mislead the majority of readers (one reader enthusiastically proclaims: "I now have a far greater interest and understanding in the man and his life after reading this book.") For readers interested in the established facts of Bertrand Russell's life, three excellent biographies and Russell's own autobiography are available.Overall, I am strongly conflicted in judging this work. My disappointment in the historical inaccuracies necessarily costs the book two stars in my rankings. However, the book has its merits, the chief one being that it may introduce to new readers some interesting philosophical questions and the historical figures who have grappled with them.____________Personal note: Most likely, some readers who loved this book will be eager to label my review "unhelpful." I respectfully suggest that the "helpful" / "unhelpful" responses to reviews are not intended to measure one's level of agreement. (One can disagree with a point of view but still regard it as a helpful contribution to respectful discourse, especially when it comes to a work as thought- provoking as this one.)

August 17, 2017Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseIn this book, we see some of the personality and characteristics, chiefly of Bertrand Russell, but also of other people involved with the efforts to establish a connection between logic and the language, or perhaps, game, of mathematics. This develops a significant picture of people who saw the possibility of making small incremental adjustments via logic to establish significant aspects of mathematics. This, however, was not the world that was unfolding before their efforts. Instead, as with Russell's paradox, small incremental changes were shown sometimes to lead to large, unpredictable changes in meaning. The book tries to capture this by suggesting a proximity of these intellectual activities to madness and the chaos of war. While Russell never crossed the fine line into the distress that nonlinearity can bring with it, some of the people he was pictured to associate with did cross the line, such as Wittgenstein, who actually participated as a soldier in WWI. I liked the book. It gave a flavor for this subtle boundary between civilization and madness. It also suggested that those such as Russell in pursuit of truth at a deep level were coming very close to that line. The people who worked on the book were also depicted. Their task was not this deep philosophical pursuit: They lived their lives calmly remotely from the borderlands. This is an extremely good book for giving an indication of what it means to get close to madness or the chaos of war, and how those far from it can feel insulated, pursuing their mundane purposes on the surface of life. I recommend this book for obtaining a view of the limits of our humanity in pursuit of the truth, but not for any deep philosophical or mathematical insights.

April 14, 2014Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseSince many other reviews have been written on this book, I would only like to add 1-2 comments that, I think, have not been made. This books is a very serious work. Its content was researched thoroughly. The script was written with care. And the art work was made with extreme care and dedication to perfection. The book took eight and half years (!) to be created. Just pay attention to the details of the drawings and the coloring of the panels in each single page. I have shown this book to graphic artists and painters and they have made only comments of admiration and excitement. Other authors tried to capitalize on the success of this book but their products were not equally good in terms of art and script. For example, look at Economix: How Our Economy Works (and Doesn't Work), in Words and Pictures. The book is printed in black and white cartoons. Forgetting color, the panels are extremely simple, without any details and artistic features. There is no story except narration of a topic.Logicomix has set the bar of graphic novels so high that will be very hard for any other author to match it --- let alone surpass it --- without serious and long term work on a project.

This graphic novel attempts to tell the history of the quest for the foundations of mathematical logic, as epitomized through the life and career of Bertrand Russell. It explores the vigorous (and ultimately futile) efforts of philosophers to find a firm basis for irrevocable truth, as built on the foundations of mathematics. A subsidiary theme is the peculiar relationship between such efforts and "madness" (as we used to call it), as indicated by the several individuals engaged in these efforts who teetered on the borders of sanity. Russell is central to the story -- indeed the novel purports to portray his boyhood, adolescence, early career, first marriage, and publication (with Alfred North Whitehead) of "Principia Mathematica." His intellectual encounters with Ludwig Wittgenstein are portrayed, as are fictionalized (i.e., entirely made- up) encounters with Georg Cantor, Gottlob Frege, David Hilbert, and Kurt GÃ¶del. An extended appendix provides introductions to the historical figures alluded to in the graphics, along with summaries of such terms and topics as "algorithm," "predicate calculus," "Vienna Circle," and "Russell's paradox.""Logicomix" is an ambitious and inventive work that has brought arcane aspects of mathematical logic and intellectual history to a new audience. The work brims with ideas, passion, and drama. I found the graphics skillfully done, the only flaw being the somewhat wooden and repetitious portrayals of people. Imaginative portrayals abound, all in full color, and sometimes with a single scene filling an entire page.Despite this book's ambitions, as a one-time philosophy major and a long- term admirer of Bertrand Russell, I cannot wholeheartedly share the great enthusiasm of many other readers. (Of more than 140 reviews at Amazon, only three rate it below 3 stars). First, I found the book's dealings with philosophy to be superficial - less than one would get in a freshman- level college lecture. Second, the authors repeatedly interject themselves into the story with cartoon panels full of argumentative dialogue and (oftimes) peripheral trivia. Personally, I found the device distracting and annoying.Third, contrary to many reviewers, this is not a biography of Russell. Its portrayal of Russell's life is full of outright inventions that bear no relationship to reality. In contrast to the account in "Logicomix", the newly orphaned baby Bertrand Russell was not deposited all alone at his grandparents' house; he moved there along with his older brother. His grandfather was not a spry gentleman who danced in his garden, but a frail, wheelchair bound man of 83. His grandfather did not introduce the boy to his library, leading young Bertie to resolve to return and investigate the locked cabinet of forbidden books - after all, Bertie was only three when he came to live with his grandparents, and his grandfather died when he was six. It was not a tutor who introduced Russell to Euclid's theorems, but his own brother Frank, also living at the estate. And then there's the running theme of the strange howlings that emanate from the attic, disturbing Russell's sleep for years -- these are revealed to emanate from an insane uncle who lives therein. This is a wholesale invention that owes more to Jane Eyre than to reality. There was no uncle in the attic, nor did the young Bertrand ever hear or imagine ghostly howlings. Why the authors felt inclined to invent such stories is hard to imagine. All of the chapters abound with inventions likely to mislead the reader into thinking them factual.In the afterword to the book, the authors cheerfully admit to having invented "deviations from fact," insisting that their work be regarded as a "graphic novel" rather than a work of history. In their defense, one could argue that the invented encounters between Russell and other historical figures (e.g. Cantor, Frege, and GÃ¶del) reflect actual encounters of the protagonist with their written ideas. One might even stretch the point and argue that the fictional boyhood they invent for Russell represents his later memories of a lonely boyhood and his adult fears of the possibility of insanity. Personally, I wish the book authors had not felt compelled to invent a fictionalized life for the protagonist. Russell is after all one of the 20th century's most interesting historical figures. The version of Russell's life portrayed will undoubtedly mislead the majority of readers (one reader enthusiastically proclaims: "I now have a far greater interest and understanding in the man and his life after reading this book.") For readers interested in the established facts of Bertrand Russell's life, three excellent biographies and Russell's own autobiography are available.Overall, I am strongly conflicted in judging this work. My disappointment in the historical inaccuracies necessarily costs the book two stars in my rankings. However, the book has its merits, the chief one being that it may introduce to new readers some interesting philosophical questions and the historical figures who have grappled with them.____________Personal note: Most likely, some readers who loved this book will be eager to label my review "unhelpful." I respectfully suggest that the "helpful" / "unhelpful" responses to reviews are not intended to measure one's level of agreement. (One can disagree with a point of view but still regard it as a helpful contribution to respectful discourse, especially when it comes to a work as thought- provoking as this one.)

In this book, we see some of the personality and characteristics, chiefly of Bertrand Russell, but also of other people involved with the efforts to establish a connection between logic and the language, or perhaps, game, of mathematics. This develops a significant picture of people who saw the possibility of making small incremental adjustments via logic to establish significant aspects of mathematics. This, however, was not the world that was unfolding before their efforts. Instead, as with Russell's paradox, small incremental changes were shown sometimes to lead to large, unpredictable changes in meaning. The book tries to capture this by suggesting a proximity of these intellectual activities to madness and the chaos of war. While Russell never crossed the fine line into the distress that nonlinearity can bring with it, some of the people he was pictured to associate with did cross the line, such as Wittgenstein, who actually participated as a soldier in WWI. I liked the book. It gave a flavor for this subtle boundary between civilization and madness. It also suggested that those such as Russell in pursuit of truth at a deep level were coming very close to that line. The people who worked on the book were also depicted. Their task was not this deep philosophical pursuit: They lived their lives calmly remotely from the borderlands. This is an extremely good book for giving an indication of what it means to get close to madness or the chaos of war, and how those far from it can feel insulated, pursuing their mundane purposes on the surface of life. I recommend this book for obtaining a view of the limits of our humanity in pursuit of the truth, but not for any deep philosophical or mathematical insights.

Since many other reviews have been written on this book, I would only like to add 1-2 comments that, I think, have not been made. This books is a very serious work. Its content was researched thoroughly. The script was written with care. And the art work was made with extreme care and dedication to perfection. The book took eight and half years (!) to be created. Just pay attention to the details of the drawings and the coloring of the panels in each single page. I have shown this book to graphic artists and painters and they have made only comments of admiration and excitement. Other authors tried to capitalize on the success of this book but their products were not equally good in terms of art and script. For example, look at Economix: How Our Economy Works (and Doesn't Work), in Words and Pictures. The book is printed in black and white cartoons. Forgetting color, the panels are extremely simple, without any details and artistic features. There is no story except narration of a topic.Logicomix has set the bar of graphic novels so high that will be very hard for any other author to match it --- let alone surpass it --- without serious and long term work on a project.

I know very little about her, though I've heard her referenced before, and read snippets from her revelations over the years. So it was a pleasure to read the recently released 240 page softback, "An Explorer's Guide to Julian of Norwich" penned by Veronica Mary Rolf. This little volume is all about Julian of Norwich and is ideal for the delver and dabbler alike."An Explorer's Guide to Julian of Norwich" is exactly what the title declares. The first part of the book goes into the history and context of Julian of Norwich, chronicling both her life and her sitz im leben (setting in life). It is easily digestible, giving enough of Julian's situation to help the reader appreciate where she was, what was her moment in history, and how the text we have today came to us. The first part of the book ends with a glossary of the Middle English words Julian used, which I referenced several times while reading the second section.The last two-thirds of the book is primarily dedicated to Julian's sixteen "revelations"as they appear in her longer text. The author gives the reader a sequential synopsis of each revelation, where significant portions of the text are quoted, and then Rolf interjects her explanatory comments. In the author's explanatory notes it was difficult at times to tell if she was reading Julian of Norwich correctly, or not. The universalistic leanings, the idea that there is no wrath in God, and the motherhood of Christ are just a few of the subjects that left me wondering if Rolf had accurately picked up Julian's meanings, or had interjected her own. The only way to find out would be to delve into the full longer text on my own. The book ends with a summary of themes and an example of how to use the book in a retreat setting.In the end, the explorer gains an appreciative idea of what Julian of Norwich wrote. And for one who has never picked up her revelations, or looked into her life, it was quite helpful. I'm not sure I could use the book in a retreat, but it does lend itself to helping Julian-novices like myself become interested and mildly informed. I recommend the book.

This book convinced me to buy Julianâ€™s complete dialogues for further spiritual reading.I think this book is excellent. I will offer a general overview of Julian, a general outline of the book, some great lines and conclude explaining my 5-star rating.Rolf is in a unique position: she has money from her and her husbandâ€™s time on Broadway and related endeavors so can do what she wishes. However, she dedicates herself as an independent scholar on a medieval mystic, about who she has written two books.Overview of Julian of NorwichJulian was a mystic in the late 1300s and early 1400s. Norwich, where she lived, was a relatively large city for the time in the tens of thousands. It was the time of the plague and the Western Schism where two, then three men claimed to be Pope. Julian first started having revelations after she was very sick at age 30. After a miraculous recovery, she became an anchorite.As a Catholic from a Germanic, Anglo-Saxon background, I find that many Catholic spiritual books written in a romance language and with a Latin mindset â€“ even in translation â€“ donâ€™t fully speak to my ingrained psychology. (For the record, Iâ€™m at least a quarter each German, Scottish and Irish.) Julian seems a little different. God speaks to her in categories that fit our Germanic minds well.Julian writes in late Middle English. Itâ€™s a little further removed than Shakespeare. Rolf maintains this in her quotations so be prepared to read a little slow at times. (Interestingly, the Penguin Classics version I just got on Kindle to read the Revelations in full has a translator but still keeps some archaic usages like thou.)Rolfâ€™s Guide to Julian of NorwichThis work is really broken into three parts. The first 65 pages give background. Then, follows a 100-page running commentary on the Revelations of Divine Love. The book concludes with 30 pages on thematic elements of Julianâ€™s writings.The First part is very valuable for understanding the context of Medieval England, the Church at the time, and Julianâ€™s own life. We donâ€™t know much about her life, but Rolf and other scholars suspect she had a husband and child who perished in the plague of 1361. She lived much of her life as an anchorite, withdrawn from the world and dedicated to chastity.Rolf seems to have read and re-read Julian many times, so her comments and summaries seem very well done in the second part.Read the rest on Patheos.Disclaimer: IVP sends me many free books including this one with no strings attached, hoping I review them.

About 5 years ago, Veronica Mary Rolf came to our parish in Manhattan to speak on her new book, Julian's Gospel. I couldn't wait to meet her because I had become very interested in the mystics. I was NOT disappointed! I was riveted listening to this author speak with such knowledge and enthusiasm. It was as if she knew Julian personally. In fact, I wrote a review on amazon that you can read. Needless to say, when I read that the same author had written another book I pre-ordered it. I was especially drawn to the title...An Explorer's Guide to Julian of Norwich. I knew I wanted more from this mystic and I had already signed up for my usual summer week long retreat and wanted to bring it. The first book was over 650 pages. This one is just about 200 and that was perfect. Like reading the bible, where scripture can sometimes speak to you differently, that is what happened to me here. I was moved to tears reading both Julian's words AND the author's. At times they were almost the same person. I had to reread revelation 14 over and over again and with the author's guidance I came very close to understanding what Julian is telling us. However, like Julian, it will take years for it to really sink in. Veronica Mary Rolf is able to take Julian's own words and bring them to life. I imagine Julian must be even more grateful than me;-) The author doesn't leave you with anything unanswered. In the last chapters she brings you digging deeper into Julian's themes and even has a suggested retreat chapter. May I recommend that when you pick up this book, have a plan. Pretend you're with the author and just let her walk you through Julian's own words. May I also suggest buying the book rather than Kindle. You'll most likely need to reread and mark up some parts.....even sentences!!ColleenNYC

First, there seems to be some confusion about the release dates of this book. I have it on Kindle (October, 2018) so no worries there. Perhaps I ought to have waited for the hardback to join all the other C.J. Sansoms on my shelves - because this is a keeper!Set in 1549, when Henry VIII's young son, Edward, has inherited his father's throne, it deals with an uprising against Edward's guardian, the Lord Protector Somerset. The rebellion is led by two brothers from Norfolk called Kett and the story centres on the city of Norwich, which at that time was England's second biggest.As with all of Sansom's Tudor novels it 'stars' the hunchback lawyer, Matthew Shardlake, and his sidekick, Jack Barak. They're sent by Edward's older step-sister, the Lady Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth I) to investigate a gruesome murder near Norwich when Kett's Rebelion erupts.In short, of all the Shardlake novels, I think this is Sansom's finest creation. I studied Tudor history at a school founded and named after Edward VI, just across the road from where Sansom himself studied at Birmingham University, but had no inkling of the extent of the rebellions of 1549. (We were founded in 1552.)But, more important, Shardlake as a character continues to develop and the plotting is truly excellent. It's a great yarn filled with superb historical insights and detail. Highly recommended. (And with a very intelligent, learned, yet easily readable coda reviewing the historical sources with Sansom's own well-informed comments.) Oh - did I say Highly recommended?

I'm not going to lie. This was a monster of a book even for me. A tomb of a read ironically at over 840 pages. But do you know what? It's CJ Sansom and the time passed quickly as I was sucked into a medieval world of intrigue and murder.Thereâ€™s a lot to enjoy here, and not just with the plot. Around you as you read, there are battles, conspiracies and talk of royal intrigue. Shardlake has a murder to solve and then another body turns up...The rebellions of 1549 during the reign of Edward VI are what drives the novel and the events of Tombland in historical Norwich. I had no idea this was a real place but Iâ€™ve worn out Google Maps finding out as much as I can about it. I know it so well now - well the 1549 version. How exciting it will be to see the modern day version and Sansomâ€™s version at the same time.Thereâ€™s a keen sense of chaos in the novel but when you have a king who is only eleven years old...the country is in turmoil and there is religious turmoil as well. No one seems safe. Even everyday life is getting harder as the financial state of the country is in free fall. You get a keen sense of all of this in the novel and itâ€™s like wandering down the streets yourself, the sights, sounds and godforsaken smells all the more real as you walk on.Shardlake works as a lawyer for Henryâ€™s VIIIâ€™s daughter Elizabeth and the Boleyn name comes back into play when a distant relative from Norfolk is found murdered. Of course, Shardlake is the man for the job, but this is unlike anything he has been asked to do before.Itâ€™s a very visual novel - from the chaotic market scenes to the cumbersome journeys the characters have to undertake to get to Tombland, the inns they stop at on the way and the cells of Norwich castle....itâ€™s a world of medieval wonder and mixes historical fact, peasant revolt and the true meaning of loyalty.And within all of this, a strong plot worthy of the Shardlake name. Read it slowly, take it in and allow yourself to be submerged into a historically fascinating world.

Our protagonist has survived being on the nose in the court of Henry VIII and is now living through the reigns of Henk's children. CJ Sansom continues to find little-known episodes in Tudor history to both delight and enlighten readers and Shardlake continues to be a sympathetic voice in an era of almost unremitting horrors.

Another gripping and convincing historical novel that I could not bear to put down. I can hardly wait for the next one.

A master story teller and another great adventure with M. Shardlake. I cannot put this one down, every page a winner. Revelation, Sovereign, Dark Fire, Dissolution, Heartstone and Lamentation were all so exciting and marvelous in the extreme. Sansom captures you from the very start of each brilliant book and takes you through the Tudor times like never before then grips you into a masterclass world of suspense. Also told with a great sense of humor with the occasional social commentary that only a true master of literature can perform. Thank you C.J.

True that this book has tons of info on WWI and written in a way that middle/high school students can understand; however, I found it too be a bit verbose and was turned off from using it with my 8th graders because of the graphic images in it. Yes, middle school students are exposed to graphic images, but I found the 6+ images of dead bodies a bit too much. I plan on using the info as supplemental info for research, but have assigned my students to read another more kid-friendly chapter book that gives as much info.

The War to End All Wars. World War I by Russell FreedmanWar World I was suppose to be the war to end all wars in the world. It was brutal, deadly, and unforgettable. Thousands of lives would be lost for a few feet of territory. Unfortunately World War I was a precursor and a cause of World War II and as we all know the horrors of war continue in the world today.World War I started when Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie were killed by a Serbian terrorist group called the Black Hand in 1914 in Sarajevo. After their murders Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia and the Russians (Serbian allies) declared war on Austria and then Germany declared war on Russia and so on until almost two dozen countries were involved in a war for reasons most couldn't clarify.World War I would change the way war was fought when it employed modern weapons, like tanks, long range artillery, trench warfare and poisonous gas. Battles would be fought on land, sea and in the air with newly designed bomber planes. Over 20 million people died in World War I, many empires collapsed, revolutions were fought, famine was widespread and the world map was redrawn.Freedman does an excellent job of explaining World War I clearly and accurately. Many photos depict the anguish of war, the devastation of the landscape and the injury of the soldiers. There are only four maps in the book and personally I would have preferred more. As a world history teacher, maps are really important to me and help me reference the location of an historical event. The War to End All Wars in my opinion could have had a lot more maps illustrating the important battles and their strategic locations.The War To End All Wars is extremely informative, easy to read and understand and an excellent reference resource on World War I.

We all know what World War II was about--even school kids still hear about Hitler, Hiroshima, and Anne Frank--but World War I doesn't have the huge place in popular culture these days that World War II occupies. Yes, we might remember that the war started with the assassination of an Austrian archduke, but what was it all really about?In the opening chapter, Freedman lays out the critical events of June 28, 1914--the date the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the imperial throne of Austria-Hungary, and his wife, Sophie, were assassinated by a member of a Serbian terrorist group. Austria wanted to punish Serbia for this crime, and declared war on its neighbor. But in a series of events that "appeared to defy logic and common sense," before long, all of Europe is caught up in a war that, as Freedman explains succinctly, "few had expected and almost no one wanted...historians continue to debate the tangled and confusing causes of the conflict, the series of accidents, blunders, and misunderstandings that swept the nations of Europe toward war...whether war might have been avoided." Troops were quickly mobilized, and six million troops were soon on the move in Europe. Each country initially believed that troops would be home by Christmas, and Freedman documents the outbreak of national patriotism that erupted in all the combattant nations. Young men of all European countries ran to volunteer, and we see poignant photographs of fresh-faced young soldiers smiling as they leave for war. But the battles that ensued in August of 1914 brought a new kind of horror to warfare, leading to more than 100,000 deaths and several hundred thousand injured in just that brief period. But no one could have forseen that the war would drag on for four long years, fought in trenches on a Western front that would change little over the rest of the war and spreading to other countries throughout the world.Besides talking about the war chronologically, Freedman discusses different themes, including the changing technology of warfare, life in the trenches, in-depth discussions of particularly important battles, a discussion of the war at sea, America's role in the war, and the aftermath of the conflict. Freedman enriches his narrative with plenty of moving first-hand descriptions from soldiers who fought in the war; these eye-witnesses hoped that by describing the horrors of war in all their terrible details they would help it from happening again. The abundant archival photographs and maps are critical to the emotional impact of this book (this title is available on audiobook, but without the photographs the listener would miss so much of the impact of this volume that I can't imagine choosing to experience this particular book that way). We see soldiers, both dead and alive, photographed in their trenches, wearing gas masks, washing their feet to help prevent infection, and burying their comrades, as well as photos of world leaders, civilians, and scenes of the devestated landscape.Freedman emphasizes at the end of the book that it is impossible for us to really understand the massive human cost of this war; 65 million men fought in the conflict, with more than half becoming casualties (either killed, wounded, missing, or taken prisoner), not to mention the 10 million civilians estimated to have died of war-related famine or disease. What's more, entire towns were destroyed, farmland burned, and the European economy left in ruins.The bitter irony of Freedman's title, The War to End all Wars, will not be lost on any of his readers, since despite the fervent hopes of those who fought in The Great War, another enormous conflict erupted less than a generation later. Russell ends his narrative with an ominous full-bleed, two-page photograph of Nazi soldiers in tanks waiting for the order to invade Poland, just 20 years after the Treaty of Versailles.This outstanding book is clearly a must-have for all school and public libraries, and is likely to figure prominently during "award season." While this book could be used for school reports, it makes a riveting read for anyone interested in history. An interesting footnote: this book is dedicated to Freedman's father, who fought in France in WWI as a teenager.

I decided to put my son through a homeschool regiment this summer to prepare him for his classes this fall in 10th grade. Just wanted to get his interest up a little. Most areas of US history are easy to find books on, that are appropriate for young adults. World War I is not one of them.So I grabbed on to this one. Glad I did. Very doable material and fantastic photos. Interesting even for us parents to leaf through and read. Can see my son polishing off a couple chapters a day and answering a few comprehension questions on each chapter that I'll put together for him.Homeschoolers...this one would be good for this topic! We attend public school during the regular school year, but if I were homeschooling for keeps, I would also want this book.

This is classified as "Juvenile Literature" but should be read by anyone who wants to understand the elements that lead up to and culminated in both World Wars, because the two are inseperable.It covers the historical & political points in concise, well ordered chapters. With photos that are relevant and give a view on how things really were.The author has done a simply brilliant job of getting all the salient facts and even make sense, when seen from almost a century away.If you want to encourage younger folk to read about this era, this is the book.If you're not sure of the history, are curious but don't want to wade through a three inch text book, buy this for yourself.
