A History of God: The 4,000-Year Quest of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, by Karen Armstrong

Amazon.com Review

Armstrong, a British journalist and former nun, guides us along one of the most elusive and fascinating quests of all time--the search for God. Like all beloved historians, Armstrong entertains us with deft storytelling, astounding research, and makes us feel a greater appreciation for the present because we better understand our past. Be warned: A History of God is not a tidy linear history. Rather, we learn that the definition of God is constantly being repeated, altered, discarded, and resurrected through the ages, responding to its followers' practical concerns rather than to mystical mandates. Armstrong also shows us how Judaism, Christianity, and Islam have overlapped and influenced one another, gently challenging the secularist history of each of these religions. --Gail Hudson

Overture to The Three Impostors:Jesus of Nazareth as the Christ was a historical invention patched together like a metaphysical Frankenstein’s monster out of mythological parts robbed from the graves of fabled saviors dead, past, gone and buried. This myth emerging from the Old Testament God of the Jews, himself a foolish old incompetent senile deity and his a low-budget production that messed up the world thanks to His own incompetence and corruption of his wild camp followers. As if all this were not enough, we then get the virgin pimping Allah and his cheerleader Mohammed, a Johnny come lately prophet-eer who brought the low arts of hoax and fraud to new heights for the ready market of believers still in search of that special something to validate their existence, justify their violence and authenticate their importance as persons, societies and nations whose needs were not being adequately served by the first two impostors.Karen Armstrong does us a very great service in discussing God, and the idea of God, in the same manner in which we would discuss any other historical phenomenon, political, social, cultural or philosophical idea. However, I disagree with many of Karen Armstrong’s assumptions. On this subject disagreement should be expected, it is healthy and it in no way detracts from this magnificent effort.I question the assumption that human beings cannot endure the metaphysical hole where God once was; that this hole creates an unbearable emptiness and a sense of intolerable desolation which needs to be filled. I am not at all sure this is the case. This in itself is a philosophical question not discussed in the book but merely assumed to make the rest of the discussion possible. The spiritual realm is not a place, it is an ideology. Do we still need the metaphysical apron strings?I question what seems to be an attempt by Karen Anderson to rescue God from oblivion and to resurrect the God of the three monotheistic religions. On p. 394, we are told how the Jews, Christians and Muslims developed remarkably similar ideas of God. This is not at all as remarkable as Karen Armstrong would have us believe. These religions did not develop in a vacuum. The Jews developed their particular parochial and tribal notion of one God based on their own peculiar historical and political experience upon which Christianity and Islam are simply accretions, notably from within the same geopolitical landscape. Not surprisingly, they have a lot in common. In fact, the founders of Christianity and Islam did not see themselves as the founders of new religions.I question the further assertion made by Karen Armstrong that when people look for greater meaning and value in life that the human mind seems to go in a certain direction. I believe that this is a mistaken inference drawn from the experience of the three monotheistic religions that evolved from a very similar set of cultural experiences and history in similar geopolitical and geographical environments. That the human mind seems to move in a certain direction as we are told on p. 394 is too broad a claim. It is also asserted that this move of the human mind to create the God of monotheism is natural to humanity. I do believe that it necessarily follows as natural to all humanity and even if it were to be natural, it does not follow that it is desirable. I can easily think of many things that are natural and very much not desirable. The book assumes the human need for God and that all humans create God in much the same manner to fill much the same need. I believe that these assumptions should be questioned and discussed before we talk about the need to create a new religion and an updated God. We need to first ask the question, do human beings still have a need for God or for religion, or for both or for neither? Is the end of belief based faith and faith based belief really a crisis? Religion is just a form of spiritual vanity. Just what the world does not need is more religion and another God.Given the choice, I would chose the tolerant superstitions of good old pagan polytheism over the triumphant insanity of the the three intolerant imposers. The old gods were not subverted without impunity, for another has taken their place.

This was the first book that I had read by this author. I was so impressed with the way she presented the historical data that I found myself--for the first time--actually understanding the major religions of the world. Her writing style is by far the best. Previous attempts at reading other authors discussing this subject were dry, complicated and frankly left me with absolutely no desire to pursue reading about the history of the different religions. Because of all the chaos and fighting amongst those of different religions of the world, I thought that I should still try to understand the religious background information and be able to discuss, with some intellect, the issues facing the problems in this country and in the East. I now feel that I can discuss some of the issues---ever since reading this book. I have also read Karen Armstrong's "In the Beginning," which I also feel was very well written. Karen Armstrong comes across as a very knowledgeable individual in the field of world religions and with her writing style, she can help people like me to better understand this subject.

For me, this book is a slow read, not because it is not well written (in fact, it is beautifully written), but because I find myself stopping after several pages, thinking about what I have just read, going back for a re-read, comparing that to what I read a few days ago, making a margin note, and so on. In other words, for me this book is an experience. If you have a genuine interest in the world's spiritual traditions, a willingness to be flexible as regards what you think you already know about them, and the time to grow, you will almost certainly like this book.I love it.

Not for the light reader, or those who have made up their mind. But, if you want to understand how religious leaders, theologians, or philosophers have understood God across eras of society, this is a good resource. Plan to read a chapter, or section of a chapter, at a time, then set it down to contemplate.

Since I've read quite a bit on the origin and evolution of religions, I had not expected to learn anything new from this 1993 book. I was wrong. Chapter 7: The God of the Mystics, in particular was fascinating. What I had not realized was how advanced the theology of Sufi mystics was in the 12th and 13th centuries. From my perspective, which is theology in the light of relativity, quantum mechanics, consciousness, and cosmology, these Sufi Mystics would not only fit in with today's leading Christian theology, but they actually would surpass it, even without the benefit of 20th century science. Think of what they could do today, in the early 21st century.

Zorba is “The Most Interesting Man in the World” advertising campaign for Dos Equis beer reached back to Zorba for casting. He is a man’s man - muscular, musical, musing (but not too much) and a Lothario curls into a ball and snoozes at a moment’s notice. Rudyard Kipling’s “If” must have been echoing in Kazantzakis’ when creating his title character. Zorba certainly kept his head about him when others were losing theirs.I approached this book from two wildly uninformed angles. The first was from either having seen, or believed I had seen, the Anthony Quinn version of Zorba the Greek in the 1960s movie. A swarthy, swashbuckling Mediterranean was what I remembered. In high school I struggled through another Nikos Kazantzakis novel but remembered it as “great literature”.No matter how I came to it, Zorba is a wonderful, wonderful read with a story and characters which etch themselves into your soul. The narrator sets out on a journey to resurrect a mine on the island of Crete. Early on he picks up a companion- the older and far more experienced Zorba - to help run the mine. Sancho Panza step aside (check the reference).Zorba invades the narrator’s physical and psychological space. In their first meeting Zorba suggests he can work at anything - after all he has arms, legs and a head. Oh, and he can also smell minerals in the earth. And, a good thing since the narrator is headed to Crete to hire a crew to mine lignite.Zorba disrupts the narrator’s obsession with books. The spoken word, not just the written word, allow the writer/narrator to develop. Zorba’s lusts - food, work, sex - are as contagious as they can possibly be. The narrator doesn’t transform to become Zorba, he adapts to become a better, fuller version of himself.Kazantzakis provides plot, characters, and Buddhist ruminations. Indeed, Zorba the Greek was written when existentialism was in full bloom. (The author came in second by one vote in Nobel Prize voting to Albert Camus in 1957). Most existential writing is anxious, verging on desperation and ennui. Zorba the Greek is life - some triumphs, more tragedies with a constant movement forward. Change happens.

Peter Bien's translation is excellent. The task of the translator is no small task, and he nailed it. Such a poetic translation. Highly recommend. Really enjoyed reading this book. I spend about 2 weeks in Greece each year and studied on Crete, so this book was easier for me to understand than probably the average reader.

Perhaps it is just me but I found the new translation difficult to relate and follow. Apparently the previous translation 'adapted' the Kazantzakis' text from French to English (not the original Greek), with omissions of some of the non-reader friendly parts. I ended up comparing the first few pages of both of the translations and I decided to stick with that of Carl Wildman. There are indeed some omissions in the latter, though. For instance, Wildman text does not have a prologue, while the new version does; so on and so forth.

The Greek version of siddhartha or zen and the art of motorocycle maintenance. A more modern spiritual journey. As good if not better than the movie.

One wants to put Zorba in the pantheon of great literary characters, but it's not needed, Zorba has already strode there by himself with giant steps that no one book can contain, joining Huck Finn, Captain Ahab, Don Quixote, Scrooge, Sherlock Holmes and all characters that live beyond the writing. In a wharfside cafe Zorba on first sight asks the bookish narrator, who's trying to crawl out beyond the written page and open a lignite mine, where he's going. The narrator answers "Crete". Zorba asks "taking me with you". "Why what can I do with you", says the narrator. Zorba replies "Why!Why! Can't a man do anything without a why? Just like that because he wants to?" That's the narrator and reader's introduction to Zorba. Words of brash honesty that define Zorba. A sixty year old wiith the enthusiasm and eyes of a child. He is not full of life, he is life itself, a dynamo full of contradictions, gulping in every breath. In the narrator's words "A living heart, a large voracious mouth, a great brute soul, not yet severed from the earth." Every experience and every day is lived as new by Zorba. Drinking wine, Zorba suddenly asks "--whatever is this red water--. You drink the red juice and lo and behold your soul grows too big for your carcass, it challanges god to a fight." Zorba lives on after the book is finished, shaming hesitant half steps, as he strides through the mind.

Having been introduced to this wonderful book with the Wildman translation, I must say that I prefer it to Bien's effort. This new translation might be more accurate but it has a stop and start feel to it for me. I do like Bien's rendition of Madame Hortense though.

Almost as riveting entertainment as the movie!Suggest watching the movie first, then reading the book.Enriches the experience by providing a background.Poli Kala!

Our ten year old became obsessed with Hamilton (Broadway cast album) and wanted to learn more about the man. This was perfect for his age!

My 9 year old son loved this book. We are going to see "Hamilton", the musical, in New York in a few weeks so I wanted him to have an understanding of who Alexander Hamilton was, beyond just what's said in the musical.

My 10 year old who is obsessed with A. Ham (thanks Lin Manuel Miranda! 😊) loved the book!!!!

Third grade grandson read 2 chapters while we were waiting for dinner at a restaurant. He seemed very absorbed in the book & had difficulty putting it down.

Bought this for my 11 year old daughter who loved it!

My 11-year-old, 5th grade grandson who enjoys reading about people in history (especially US) loved this book. Since he and his family may go to see the musical Hamilton soon, I got it for him to have good background information.

Well written and easy to read. I learned much and suffered very little. Recommended for anyone interested in the lives and relationships of the founding fathers.

My 9-year old used this as background for her school report. She is an avid reader and found this helpful.

Amazon.com Review

The Stranger is not merely one of the most widely read novels of the 20th century, but one of the books likely to outlive it. Written in 1946, Camus's compelling and troubling tale of a disaffected, apparently amoral young man has earned a durable popularity (and remains a staple of U.S. high school literature courses) in part because it reveals so vividly the anxieties of its time. Alienation, the fear of anonymity, spiritual doubt--all could have been given a purely modern inflection in the hands of a lesser talent than Camus, who won the Nobel Prize in 1957 and was noted for his existentialist aesthetic. The remarkable trick of The Stranger, however, is that it's not mired in period philosophy. The plot is simple. A young Algerian, Meursault, afflicted with a sort of aimless inertia, becomes embroiled in the petty intrigues of a local pimp and, somewhat inexplicably, ends up killing a man. Once he's imprisoned and eventually brought to trial, his crime, it becomes apparent, is not so much the arguably defensible murder he has committed as it is his deficient character. The trial's proceedings are absurd, a parsing of incidental trivialities--that Meursault, for instance, seemed unmoved by his own mother's death and then attended a comic movie the evening after her funeral are two ostensibly damning facts--so that the eventual sentence the jury issues is both ridiculous and inevitable. Meursault remains a cipher nearly to the story's end--dispassionate, clinical, disengaged from his own emotions. "She wanted to know if I loved her," he says of his girlfriend. "I answered the same way I had the last time, that it didn't mean anything but that I probably didn't." There's a latent ominousness in such observations, a sense that devotion is nothing more than self-delusion. It's undoubtedly true that Meursault exhibits an extreme of resignation; however, his confrontation with "the gentle indifference of the world" remains as compelling as it was when Camus first recounted it. --Ben Guterson

Review

“The Stranger is a strikingly modern text and Matthew Ward’s translation will enable readers to appreciate why Camus’s stoical anti-hero and devious narrator remains one of the key expressions of a postwar Western malaise, and one of the cleverest exponents of a literature of ambiguity.” –from the Introduction by Peter Dunwoodie

This is a very unique novel. In a way, to me anyway, "The Stranger" is the novel itself. There is a great economy of words in this short novel. I am quite positive that is meant to convey a sentiment and / or a philosophy. To me, it did both. I cannot say I really love this novel. But I did feel it is a great novel.Part of the problem I have in this review is not wishing in any way to be "a spoiler". In any event, this book is written in a very sparse manner. There are times the protagonist is devoid of feelings and I think that the author conveys that in this arid style. I need to state that I was left disconcerted about the similar lack of description of one character that died in the novel. It seemed cold and dehumanizing to THAT person that I did not appreciate. This next part RISKS giving something away about he novel. If one is interested, one may wish to read the novel first before reading the next part of this review. This novel was written in 1942. France was occupied by Germany. The question in my mind is "Did Camus feel like an outsider in his own country?"So what? Good question... Well in 1940, Richard Wright authors an excellent African American Protest Novel, "Native Son". Clearly Richard Wright was trying to convey the anger of an African American who may feel an outsider in his own country. Stylistically, Richard Wright is much more descriptive. His novel is perhaps twice as long as The Stranger.Native Son has a "third person" narrator. The Stranger has a "first person" narrator. This may be an important difference as a reader cannot be really sure of all of the innermost thoughts of Native Son's, Bigger Thomas. However I was struck by what I perceived to be a similarity between the perceived feelings of Bigger Thomas, especially at the end of the book, and the stated feelings of the protagonist in The Stranger.(SPOILER ALERT) But please compare the visits to the two prisoners at the end of each novel.Above I stated that I felt this is a great novel, that I did not love the novel. Again, I feel the same way about Native Son. Native Son was much a more painful reading experience for me personally. But otherwise, I cannot help but be struck by my similar reaction to both novels. Thank You...

Monsieur Meursault is a French-Algerian: his mother (Maman) has just died and he attends her funeral. That event is the axis about which the story turns - not so much the physical attendance or even the external events of the funeral, but rather Meursault's psychological reaction to her death. The reader is left to deduce their own 'connections' between the death of Maman and the events that follow - which will ultimately lead Meursault to the guillotine. The story is full of metaphor and discovery: the sun and light and heat bristle throughout the pages of the story. "She said, 'If you go slowly, you risk getting a sunstroke. But if you go too fast, you work up a sweat and then catch a chill inside the church.' She was right. There was no way out"The book is short (125 pages) and written in the short sentence, staccato style of writers like Hemingway. The read is easy but the meanings are deeper than the words on the page. By the end the effect is a story told in the detail of two or three times the pages that Albert Camus uses. It is clever and thought provoking and well worth the read!(Matthew Ward translation)

The first novel I’ve read in ages, I was exposed to Camus by a Goodreads reviewer. Much later a bracing audio series by The Great Courses and Robert Solomon arrested my interest. Without both, I’d not have liked the book as much. Camus writes a metaphor. With exception of the value nature has for the main character, Meursault—colors in the sky, smell of the countryside, sea spray in the air—the metaphor is for meaning in life through emphasis of its absence. “Marie came by to see me,” says Meursault, “and asked me if I wanted to marry her. I said it didn’t make any difference to me and that we could if she wanted. Then she wanted to know if I loved her. I answered the same way…that it didn’t mean anything but that I probably didn’t love her…[but] if she wanted to we could get married.”Then there was the obliviousness of Meursault. While listening to a lawyer prosecute him for murder, Meursault thinks to himself, “Of course, I couldn’t help admitting that he was right. I didn’t feel much remorse for what I’d done. But I was surprised by how relentless he was. I would have liked to have tried explaining to him cordially, almost affectionately, that I had never been able to truly feel remorse for anything. My mind was always on what was coming next, today or tomorrow.” But the trial isn’t really about the murder, so much as it is about Meursault, and how dangerous is his potential to show people they invent meaning, and that they can just as easily uninvent it. As the lawyer says of Meursault’s empty heart, it is “an abyss threatening to swallow society.” Finally in prison, awaiting “my head cut off in the public square in the name of the French people,” Meursault begins to realize what gives life value is its brevity. He never thought much about death, other than when his father returned home from an execution (funeral?) to vomit from the experience. “I blame myself every time for not having paid enough attention to accounts of execution. A man should always take an interest in those things. You never know what might happen…How had I not seen that there was nothing more important than an execution, and that when you come right down to it, it was the only thing a man could be truly interested in?” According to the audio series, Camus meant to create a mirror for the reader to see themselves. It worked.

I like this book, I really do. The veggie burgers here are very, very tasty and most of the recipes are well thought out. Lukas Volger starts off explaining the basic ingredients to make a good veggie burger and then dives into some really delicious recipes: bean, grain, and nut burgers; vegetable burgers; tofu, seitan, and tvp burgers. He includes a really nice section on making your own burger buns (and these are GREAT!) with information about making them gluten-free. There are sections on salads and sides and condiments to go along with the burgers.A few of my favorites are the bean burgers, mushroom burgers, pub grub burgers, and Portobello burgers.*BUT* even though I like this book so much and successfully have made a number of the recipes, I have some real concerns about the way he has put some of them together. First, the recipes are for four or six burgers and these are just too much unless you are cooking for a large family or a party. I constantly have to cut down on the ingredients to make burgers for just one, two or three of us.Second, the lists of ingredients for some of the burgers are insanely long. For instance, the recipe to make six tempeh burgers has 23 separate ingredients. I appreciate the attempt to make a good recipe, but I am not going to scrounge up 23 different ingredients for a veggie burger, no matter how tasty. (Do I really need to add 1/4 teaspoon each of garlic powder and onion powder for six burgers?)And finally, I wish he had included nutritional information for each of the recipes. Knowing the fat, sodium, calorie, and cholesterol content would make it easier to choose recipes. But generally speaking, the recipes are extremely good and the end results are excellent. This cookbook has a permanent place in my kitchen.

This cookbook has a great variety of burger recipes. Many others like it have mainly variations on bean burgers. Not this. It has a wide range of base ingredients and numerous methods. It gives me lots of inspiration to adapt to ingredients I have on hand. Taste is subjective. I found that a number or recipes were either very over or very under seasoned for me. The falafel style burger needed lots more spice to mimic real falafel flavor. Another had so much fresh ginger that no other flavors were detectable. Yet another called for so much sun dried tomato that I knew to cut way back on the quantity. Sometimes the recipes weren't specific enough - example: a burger calls for one celery root. Well, there is enough of a size difference in celery root to really affect the burger. A measured cup quantity would have turned out a more successful product. Those burgers came out much too watery due to using a largish celery root. I also found that the burger size or quantity was not consistent. Following a recipe and shaping the given number of servings could result in a giant burger or an appropriately sized one. Finally, my pet peeve: no nutritional information is given. I still give this 4 stars because the second time you make any of these recipes, the burger can be exceptional if you know your ingredients. Again, lots of inspiration using many different non-meat bases. If this book had been properly tested, edited and included nutritional info, I would be buying it over and over as a gift.

I was intrigued by this title, and it has a very reasonable price, so I ordered a copy. Not knowing the author or the publishing company, or having heard anything about the book, other than having it come up on an amazon random suggestion, I was wary. Well, it appeared in the mail, and I was immediately intrigued by many of the recipes. I paged through and wanted to immediately make almost all the burgers. I am sitting at my desk to an extraordinary lunch right now of a baked quinoa and spinach burger. [I topped it with melted cheddar.]Let's face it. Veggie patties can be extraordinarily boring, but I've been striving to eat less meat at lunchtime and have been buying the pre-packaged frozen selections. This book is fantastic for making your very own, from-scratch burgers. The variety is awesome! Lentils, beans, mushrooms, quinoa, spinach, veggies. Now I could eat veggie burgers every day and not feel like I'm eating the same old thing.Seriously, this quinoa/spinach burger is so delicious. I'm going to stop writing this review and enjoy my lunch. Buy this book. It's awesome.

You could spend a lot of time surfing the net in search of veggie burgers. And that's something I did until I purchased this little gem. The cookbook is informative, organized, and the recipes are highly accessible and delicious.

I think this is a great cookbook. The subject was in desparate need of exploration, and thank goodness Lukas Volger was up for the job. I liked reading it as well as I've liked making the recipes so far. I have successfully made the Easy Bean Burgers, the Seeded Edamame Burgers, the Curried Eggplant and Tomato Burgers (gluten free!), and the Tofu and Chard Burgers. The Tofu and Chard burgers did give me trouble though, and I wanted to put a couple cautions here so others don't do my same missteps. My main mistake in making the recipe was using super-firm tofu (from Trader Joes). The super-firm, while I'm sure it is great for marinating and grilling as a cutlet, is just not wet enough to form a paste when half of it is blended up, and a patty will not hang together for cooking, though it still tasted good as a scrambly thing. I also ran across an earlier experimental version of this recipe on the internet, and it had 14 ounces of tofu rather than the 8 in the book. I think the recipe more honestly makes 6 patties with 14 ounces of tofu. The larger amount of tofu dilutes the breadcrumb flavor better too. This is the first recipe book purchase I've made on my Kindle. Though I miss the glossy cookbook experience, I really like how the recipe "book" lays flat on the counter, is with me in the store, can read to me, has links to the recipes through the contents, and doesn't get lost. I'm really looking forward to making more recipes from this book, and I'm also looking forward to L. Volger's next book which I hope will come out real soon :)
