As someone who is in a relationship and wants to put Christ in the center of that, I find this book really awesome and heartwarming. It's like this books tells you everything you need to do as a routine for you and your partner to last. I like how the book comes on to you like a friend and encourages you to be kind and open up your heart with no conditions. This book has made me think a lot. I like its impression on me!

I bought this initially for my boyfriend and I to add to our daily devotionals. We liked it so much I bought a copy for my parents. They road trip quite a bit and like to take it along to make the trips more interesting.Whether you have been together for months or years or decades, if you are looking to get to know your partner, try this book.My only reason for four stars instead of five is that some of the questions seem to be really similar. So that brings about an almost identical conversation to a previous one.

This is a wonderful recourse for those of us who don't communicate. I have learned more about my husband of 42 years after going halfway through this book. I just wish they would come up w another book w more questions. I carry it in my purse so if we're in the car or restaurant I can get to it. Highly recommend.

You won't regret it.

One of my favorite books. It definitely helps you to become aware of and get in touch with imposter syndrome. I found the writing exercises helpful. Well written book and interesting read. I have returned to it in different moments to reread sections.

Really helpful, even just from a consciousness-raising perspective. Was struggling with job-related depression, and this helped me realize that the negative self-image I had developed was not fair or accurate, or even unusual for people (and women in particular).

I’ve been familiar with Valerie’s work for quite awhile, and have heard her talk about the Imposter Syndrome several times. In both her academic and professional life, she’s spent a great deal of time researching its causes and the psychological/emotional toll it takes on those who struggle with it. Best of all, she’s written an excellent book with practical advice and tips on how to identify and overcome it. With a title like “The Secret Thoughts of Successful Women,” you may wonder why a guy like me would read it. Although the Imposter Syndrome affects women more frequently—for reasons she outlines in the book—most men can identify with much of her material. It also provides great insights for men into what our sisters, wives, and daughters deal with on a daily basis. I underlined many ideas that hit home with me and will cite a few examples. Toward the beginning of the book, Valerie lists “Seven Perfectly Good Reasons Why You May Feel Like and Imposter—and What to Do About Them.” Reason #1 is that we were raised by (imperfect) humans. As children, the withheld praise that we hunger for from adults can haunt us for a long time. But if we realize that perhaps our parents never received the approval they needed growing up, it makes it easier to forgive them and to move on. She also identifies self-destructive habits we develop to undermine our successes. If we procrastinate on studying for an important test and end up receiving a bad grade, we justify it by saying it really does prove we’re not as smart as others think we are. How we respond to mistakes and criticism factors into a diminished self-image for many people. Valerie reminds us that sometimes are critics are dead wrong. Did you know Walt Disney was fired from a newspaper for “lacking ideas?” Perhaps most shocking to some readers may be the long list of famous people who confess to feeling like imposters. Tina Fey, Sonia Sotomayor, Meryl Streep, Kate Winslet and the late Andy Williams are quoted. But as mere average mortals, it’s refreshing to learn that even those with world-class talent acknowledge their occasional doubts about how deserving they are of their fame. And it’s interesting to see how they cope with it. Finally, after presenting the tools needed to overcome the Imposter Syndrome, Valerie presents an inspiring challenge. “Everyone loses when you play small,” she writes. “There are people out there this very minute who want and deserve to benefit from your full range of knowledge, abilities, and skills.” This is a brilliant book that belongs in every self-help library.

This book is great. If you are interested in the subject of imposter syndrome, than this is a GREAT book to read. I've read over 50 books in the last year (all non fiction) and this is one of the ones I always recommend to others.

This very readable book by Valerie Young expands our understanding of "the impostor syndrome" and the many perfectly good reasons we might find ourselves with the uncomfortable sense of feeling like a fraud. This is accomplished through the development of a guide that leads readers to identify and confront many of the issues that may be holding them back from greater personal success. Encouragement in naming personal road blocks is key, as is discovery of even those internalized bits of pre-programming that may not have been previously identified as slowing our forward momentum. Dr. Young's thoughtful writing inspires us to re-evaluate our own life experiences as they may be viewed as being hurtful (or even helpful). The book further serves to lead us into personal consideration of the issues and patterns we have identified, to help us learn which serve us well and which do not. It helps us develop tools for maximizing one while minimizing the other.The percentage of women who are dealing with this syndrome is considered to be high but it is certainly not exclusive of men and the book contains many anecdotes and references which add to the richness of the content. Dr. Young finally encourages us to take two snapshots of ourselves. One to be taken before we have engaged with the content of this book and the other to be the new confident self-affirming picture.This could be an excellent book for consideration by book study groups.

Dr. Young has so much wisdom to share. One of the most useful things about this book was that it helped me to identify when I might be unconsciously sabotaging myself, like procrastinating on pursuing challenge or recognition until the deadline had passed, and then using "I was too busy" as an excuse. Because I recognize these tendencies now, I have been able to overcome them. I've also heard the thoughts in this book expressed by friends, and as a result have given a few as gifts, always to rave reviews and appreciation. I require this book as part of the curriculum for my 85 hour prenatal yoga teacher training. I chose this book because of it's ability to educate students in the basics of Ayurveda during pregnancy. I think that the author did a great job synthesizing some very complex material into layman's terms. My trainees always really enjoy this book. I think the postpartum section could be a bit more comprehensive.

There were many tips from this book that I used in my pregnancy. The parts on antithesis diet for specific dosha were very interesting. Some advices were bit unrealistic to follow especially the extensive journaling. Overall I would recommend this book for those future mommies that have interest in yoga,ayurveda and more holistic approach to pregnancy

Has a lot of interesting information that I haven't read yet in alternative pregnancy approaches.

pretty good reference for an Ayurvedic pregnancy. not necessarily strictly Ayurvedic in recommendations, but definitely a good reference to have along with the more general books such as Svoboda Ayurveda for Women.

This book is so cool. I bought it for my 3 year old grandaughter. The letters from god would be super for anyone to receive. They just show how much god loves us. They all make you cry. The pictures and easter story are excellenty done. Great book in every way

It also gave me a chance to explain happy tears to my babies when they asked why I was crying as I read it 😭 The way this book explains Jesus's love, humility and sacrifice and what heaven is, is astounding and touching. The Easter week story is presented in a way that reaches hearts of all ages. Throughout the book are "Letters From God" that will just ring all the way down in your heart. This is a must have for parents❤

Beautiful book!! Our family’s new easter favorite. It goes through various aspects of the Easter story with a letter for each, which could easily be used as a devotional with small children leading up to Easter. We used the feet washing story/Passover section to teach the kids about serving others at for our Seder/Passover meal—a wonderfully written and illustrated book!

It was a good book. I bought it for a class at my college. Good book though. Recommend to anyone taking literature courses.

One evening in Nairobi in the mid 80's I spent an uncomfortable dinner party defending this book to a bunch of outraged white folks. Well, Ngugi had it a bit worse. For the crime of producing a play in Kikuyu and for having ordinary folk be in it, and, of course, for the play expressing some irritation at the idea that a few should have all the money, he was jailed and his play confiscated.As a result of his imprisonment, perhaps, this is not a happy book. Using allegory and parable he constructs a fabulous tale critiquing the existing order. He lays into the wealthy, the white colonialists and anyone else getting well off or acquiescing in the current regime of theft and greed.Some of the outrage people have at this book came from Nugui's imaginative retelling of Jesus' parables. "For the Kingdom of Earthly Wiles can be likened unto a ruler who foresaw that the day would come when we would be thrown out of a certain country by the masses and their guerrilla freedom fighters" begins a parable loosely based on The Parable of the Talents.It looks like he's attacking Jesus -- if you think Jesus was just telling pious little "be good" stories. On the other hand, if you really listen to Jesus, you'll think Ngugi is right on target.This is an African version of Liberation Theology.
