From what I can tell Ed seems like a very smart guy and for that reason I really try to take what he says and learn from it. As someone who loves statistics the ideas presented in this book were not necessarily new or unheard of to me, but the way in which Ed presents the material makes the points he's making easy to digest and apply in real life. I would love to see him come out with a more in depth book on similar topics so that I can learn even more. I look forward to applying the principles I did learn to my tournament brackets this year.

This insight here isn't about identifying the best teams; it's about increasing your odds of beating the others in your pool. Don't choose the teams others like - you'll do better if you have a unique set of picks.

Got this for free and worth every penny! Jokes aside, very interesting look at how to pick and not to pick winners for NCAA Basketball in March. Worth the quick read for the casual stat fan or not-so-casual basketball fan, or anyone looking to do better in their brackets! Following the advice in the book does require using the author’s advanced stat profiles on his website.

Last year I took 2nd place in a small pool. This last year I won it. I know little of basketball!

Ed Feng bring his math chops to sports analytics with great results. His winning strategies and formulas have helped me win NCAA pools and do better in NFL and College Football pick 'em contests. 5 stars. Also, his podcast is really great.

Enjoyable, could have been shorter but overall worth your time, doesn’t take long to get through, smart analysis in each chapter.

Short but solid. As a numbers person I already understood most of it, but definitely some good nuggets to get out of it.

Hard to read, I couldnt really understand much, and the sentences didnt make any sense, but it has a dragon.

This is probably a good translation, but it really needs a translation of the translation. The English used is so difficult that most people would have a hard time understanding what is going on. It is not a translation into modern everyday english. I tried to read it to my children, but I had to stop every paragraph and explain what was going on. I ended up buying another translation by Michael Morpurgo which is much better and more understandable.

This is a well read audiobook I recommend. This epic early Dark Ages poem is full of bona fide history mixed with the anonymous author's genius creativity.

This is an excellent version of the Anglo Saxon book. It maintains the rhythm and pace of the original text but makes it easy to follow and understand. It resembles The Hobbit in its language and descriptions. Children and adults alike will enjoy it.

More of a slog than a read. Just wanted to finish it because years ago I had given up half way through

This is the first book in the Devils and Realist series. Right now there are fifteen volumes released in this series. This was a decent manga that was a fun and light-hearted read. It’s set in Victorian England and has some supernatural elements to it.William Twining is the perfect young man; incredibly smart, incredibly good-looking, and incredibly good at everything...and he’s not afraid to brag about it. However, when he finds out his uncle has gone bankrupt and left William with absolutely nothing, things take a turn for the worse. As Willian desperately searches his estate for the money to continue his education he insead finds a secret basement room.In this basement William accidently summons the demon Dantalion...but of course William only believes in facts and science, not the supernatural, so he doesn’t take the demon’s appearance seriously at all. What follows is a hilarious caper in which multiple demons try to win William’s favor in order to get his vote to elevate each respective demon to the position of Lord of Hell.This manga is beautifully drawn and was a fun and light-hearted read. I enjoyed a lot of the characters but thought the different demons petitioning William got a bit repetitive towards the end. I enjoyed this volume but I am not sure I could read 14 more volumes of this…Overall this was a fun and well done manga. I liked it but didn’t love it. This is a series that I would have to buy (library doesn’t have it), so I am not planning on continuing it right now. However, I think fans of Black Butler would enjoy this one (although IMHO it’s not quite as good as that series).

This is my favorite series and I was elated to discover that is is now being printed in English. I bought the newest volumes as soon as it comes out because it is one of the few manga I will reread and follow. The art is truly extraordinary and buy a very famous artist and the author of this series really knows how to tell a story well. I really love the cast, the magical realm of the demons and just about everything to do with this manga. The main character is also very different from other protagonists in similar magical genres in that he's a realist, which means that he believes in logic and reason rather than the supernatural. I find this series fun and very different with amazing artwork. In some respects, I would say it is almost like pandora hearts and kuroshitsuji, but meant for a much older audience. The anime is also very impressive but I enjoy the manga the most!

Omg okay! I accidentally found this series not long ago, and based on the description I decided to order the first two volumes to check it out if its any good. I got hooked almost immediately after a few pages! It's so funny yet interesting and intriguing!If you are a fan of supernatural settings with demons, and ghosts and mysteries then you will love this! :)Ps: I also love love love the dynamics between William and Dantalion! Everything about this looks promising!

A very unique story, with stunning artwork, smart aleck characters that are fun to read about, and leaves you wanting more, But I would not recommend this for younger audiences. Also, I can see where the religious aspects could be blasphemous to some. I greatly enjoyed the story and will buy more volumes, but it may disturb some. If you did not care for stories like Black Butler or Angel Sanctuary because of subject matter, this story is not for you. If you are looking for a well thought out story line with amazing artwork I highly recommend it.

I never knew realists didn't believe in superstition until I read this manga. Casting that aside, I really loved William's denial, especially when he pointed out that the demons were just made up out of atoms and could be explained by science, which they really can't be. The story did have a Pandora Hearts/Black Butler vibe but kept it fresh, as it wasn't an exact carbon copy. The characters are likeable and pretty funny. Both entertaining and silly, I recommend this manga.

It's an anime as well which you have to continue by reading the manga (bought all 6, whats out so far). Like the anime the more I read the more I get drawn into the world. I love all the characters so far. There is a 2 sided coloured pages. And the oposite side of front cover and back cover there is info on 1 character. So 2 total per volume on different character. Beautiful art. The cover is not misleading of what to expect art wise. Story is great as well.

Oh jesus, this manga...MUA! I loved it! It came in perfect condition, not a wrinkle! Or a crease, well, it is new.But the story, i love it! I watched then anime first, and i had to read it! Cant wait for the second volume to be released! (The english translation of course.) Yes, you can read it online...But whats the fun in that!? Its better to have the book with you and read it whenever you want! Highly recommend this story! Its really good!

About the Author

Kelly Cowan started teaching microbiology at Miami University in 1993. Her specialty is teaching microbiology for pre-nursing/allied health students at the university’s Middletown campus. After working as a dental hygienist, she earned her Ph.D. at the University of Louisville and later worked at the University of Maryland’s Center of Marine Biotechnology and the University of Groningen in The Netherlands. Kelly has published (with her students) 24 research articles stemming from her work on bacterial adhesion mechanisms and plant-derived antimicrobial compounds. But her first love is teaching―both doing it and studying how to do it better. She is past chair of the Undergraduate Education Committee of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM). Her current research focuses on the student achievement gap associated with economic disparities, as well as literacy in the science classroom. Great student resource, even if you have this older edition. I don't generally write reviews for textbooks, but I'd recommend this even if you aren't taking micro. A very well written text which is well organized. If you read each chapter before going to class, it'll be hard not to get a good grade. The way that the material is presented in this book is as good or better than any lecture on the subject.I saved money by buying used older edition, and I got an A. I hope you do too

The headline offers the combo package with the book and connect access- the book is fine but it never came w the connect access which my class required- so I ended up having to purchase that as well which comes with the online book- waste of money- don’t purchase this if your expecting the “combo” because it’s just the book-

The book is what I needed but it DOES NOT come with an access card like it states. When contacting the seller, they told me it’s not guaranteed. The access can be purchased in the McGraw-Hill site for an additional $90. You’d be better off spending the money for a new book with access.

Good book. And was in great condition.

I hate microbiology so far its just not that interesting to me.

Nick Abadzis is a British comics creator whose work has been published across the globe, from the U.S. to Japan. He based his book on the true story of the Sputnik 2: there was really a dog named Laika, and she touched the stars before she died. In writing his graphic novel, Nick Abadzis did thorough scientific and historical research, including traveling to Russia, visiting special Sputnik 2 archives, and interviewing experts in the field. He lives in London with his wife and daughter.

Beautiful and tragic. I don't know if I have the heart to read this book again.Nick Abadzis’ LAIKA is a fictionalized account of the short life and sad death of Laika, the Soviet space dog. Be forewarned: it’s a three-handkerchief, bucket-of-tears kind of novel.Laika’s story is one of loyalty and trust repaid with callous abandonment and deception, and the injustice of this tale resonates deeply. “Do not worry,” Laika is told, again and again. “Trust me.” Meanwhile, death waits for her, implacable.Reading Abadzis’ graphic novel, I found myself saying “It’s not fair! It’s just not fair!” A very childlike reaction, one that I’m usually too jaded, or too adult, to voice so vehemently.But the pointless suffering of an innocent animal tends to trigger that kind of vehemence. We want to the world to be less cruel, and when we see a devoted animal suffering and dying precisely because she’s so devoted, then the rationalizations we’re usually able to make as adults don’t work so well anymore.Abadzis isn’t the first artist to engage with Laika’s tragic history. One of my favorite films is Lasse Hallstrom’s My Life as a Dog, available from the Criterion Collection. It’s the story of Ingemar, a young Swedish boy growing up in the fifties and struggling with feelings of abandonment and betrayal. Ingemar’s father is gone, his mother is desperately ill, and no one wants to tell him that his dog isn’t coming back. Sent away to live with relatives, Ingemar sits and looks at the stars and thinks of Laika, who got sent into space without any food, left there to die. “You have to compare,” he tells himself. “You always have to compare.” His grief at being sent away is sustainable, if only because he identifies with Laika, who had it so much worse.

Don't let the art style of this graphic novel fool you, it is defiantly an adult novel, with the politics of the Cold War Space Race at the front. Nick Abadzis has mixed what is unknown about Laika and what is known about her into a story that is very believable. This graphic novel conveys the truth accurately, and holds no punches back. Has a History lover I love this book. I applaud Nick for keeping the record straight. He could have very easily morphed the truth about Laika into a happy ending story. Nick opted to stick the historical truth and for that I applaud him. He got more details right than wrong based on what I know about Laika and the Sputnik II program. Dog lovers beware, this book will leave you in tears, Reading about Laika in historical documents made me cry. If you are looking to memorialize Laika and share her story, then this book is for you. Putting emotion into history is the best way to share it, and this book is a great stepping stone to learning about Laika. If you are a dog lover looking for a tear jerker, this book I guarantee you will leave you in tears.

I was already well aware of the 'official' story of the Soviet space dog Laika (aboard Sputnik 2) but this terrific and poignant graphic novel by Nick Abadzis fills in the missing pieces of Laika's story with skillfully (and seamlessly) interwoven fact and fiction (not too unlike James Cameron's "Titanic" in that regard). Real characters like rocket designer Sergei Korolev and fictional characters such as Laika's various previous owners are well integrated. Laika and the various other dogs in the Soviet training program have their simple, primal (touching) thoughts conveyed to the reader via thought captions which really 'feel' how a dog would/should think. The details of the period (late 1950s Soviet Union) are very authentic, and the characters are all part of a lovely (and heartbreaking) tapestry of Laika's life. The story moved me very deeply.

A wonderfully written and drawn story, that is mostly factual. Being an animal love, I couldn't stop thinking about Laika and feeling terribly emotional after finishing the book (a couple of months ago), and continue to feel sad even till today :'(

This tender graphic novel deals with the birth of spaceflight from the point of view of Laika, the first dog in space, who went aboard the Soviet Union's Sputnik 2, in late 1957, in a flight that was never meant to return to Earth. As the story is told here, after the success of the first Sputnik in October 1957, Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev wanted to capitalize on the propaganda value of the world's first satellite and pushed for a new launching for the anniversary of the Russian revolution, just a month later, this time bringing into orbit for the first time a living being into space. There was little time for preparing a proper satellite, so a non retrievable rocket was launched. Thus, the moral of this tale is that a dog's life was sacrificed for the honor of the nation (there was little scientific value in Sputnik 2). The story here has three protagonists: Laika, the female stray dog turn sacrificial space pioneer (a moving, presumably invented story about her troubled, wandering life as an unwanted dog before being caught for the Soviet space program is presented here in the first chapters), Korolev, the driven and ambitious chief designer and a former gulag inmate during Stalin's time, and the fictional Yelena, the female lab technician in charge of Laika's health who, despite the advice of her superiors, comes to care for her personally. With drawings that are attractive without being flashy, this is a very entertaining book. It is also quite poignant, without being overtly sentimental.

This book is incredibly well written and illustrated. It's fantastic. But as a dog lover, it destroyed me. I had planned to take my time looking at the different illustrations closely and processing the story, but the illustrations of Laika's facial expressions were heartbreaking. It was a great book, but it was so hard to read.
