This book is great for all the different stitches for each type of embroidery. The major fault being that overhead spiral thar makes you have to turn the entire book to read it. However, the worst fault is the fact that they do NOT show the stitch on an embroidered piece. You have no idea what it is supposed to look like... how the whole thing should be set out. (There is a microscopic picture less than one inch square with little color definition that fails to accomplish its purpose). I love having a picture to give me bigger ideas for my pieces. It just becomes tedious to shuffle books between pictures and instructions. Can't one book have it all?

This is a guide to embroidery stitches, specifically aimed at crazy-quilters. It's a very small book---just a guess, I'd say no more than four by five inches. But it's spiral bound and it stands on its own, so you can prop it up beside you while you're embroidering, in order to see how to execute the stitches you're doing. The directions are simple and easy to understand, fully illustrated, and directions are given for both left and right-handed folks!It isn't an exhaustive source for all embroidery stitches, but it has all of the basics, plus many I'd never heard of before. Plenty are designed to be worked in a straight line, in order to cover the seams of your crazy-quilt. Others are meant to fill in the gaps. There's even a section at the end that shows examples of how to combine different stitches with breathtaking results! Most of the embroidery stitches are for use with regular floss, but a few are for silk ribbon, and a few are for wool thread.Last year, I made a crazy-quilt pincushion, but since I'm not an expert on embroidery, it was rather plain-looking. Thanks to this book, I finally produced a crazy-quilt piece that's richly embroidered and actually LOOKS like a proper crazy-quilt! I couldn't be happier.Five stars and highly recommended to anyone who wants to learn basic embroidery, or embroidery for crazy-quilting.

One of the few books that show left handed embroidery stitches. View the look inside and you will see all the stitches in this book and towards the end is a sample page that shows left hand on one side, right on the other. This is a stand up book so you can have it open in front of you when you are trying to work the stitch. This book is smaller in size so that it easily fits in the sewing box. Its a bit larger than 1/2 of a sheet of paper. Excellent book!

I bought this book because several girls in my sewing class had copies. There are lots of stitches covered and what is nice it has illustrations for left handed stitchers. The small book has a binder for spine so easy to fold back and stand up while you practice your embroidery. Fits into your purse as well. A handy guide.

This is a handy little book to have. It's 192 pages of excellent info . The instructions are clear drawings ,(with left & right handed pictures) and a little thumbnail of the actual stitch on fabric. The only drawback is with some of the pictures using small stitches ,you can't see the detail very good.Oh well ,I can live with that. Everything is explained really well ,even for a beginner like me. I'm dying to do every stitch in there ! It even shows some ribbon embroidery. This book is worth it's weight in gold.

The spiral binding makes for easy use when following the stitches which are all listed in alphabetical picture index in the front of the book, along with the stitch you will find the page number right by it. Very easy pattern directions. You can also set the book up on the small easel for ease of reading while you sew. Nice book, well worth the money, especially for myself who is just getting back into embroidery and learning to "crazy quilt". May have to purchase another of Baker's lovely books.

I LOVE this little book. It's sturdy and well designed and loaded with embroidery stitches that have left and right handed instructions, one stitch to a page. It fits neatly into my basket and can be stood up. And the alphabetical stitch index at the beginning includes a miniature of each stitch for easy reference. Thank you Judith for an indispensable tool!

The book is full of many kinds of stitches, with good, clear how-to diagrams. For that reason it is a great resource book and I would give it 4 stars for content. However, the design layout for the book does not flow--it's neat that you can stand it up and flip the pages, but the direction of each page is the reverse of the next so you have to pick it up and turn it back and forth to read and follow the text or stitch sequence. Also, the photographs of the actual embroidered stitch is tinier than a postage stamp. I'd give the design no more than 2 stars, hence my 3-star rating.

I have not finished it yet, however I tried TeamTreehouse and Lynda before and I think this book is a better resource. I have learned so much more through the book because it requires you to do more. Plus, because I'm reading and coding, I screw up more, which is wonderful. I learn so much about the language while debugging my mistakes in their tutorial programs.The negative is that it needs an update now, since the release of Xcode 6. The "empty application" template which the book uses throughout is no longer available. You can google "Empty Application Xcode 6" on how to recreate this template.. It is not terribly difficult to download the empty application template and use it in Xcode 6.

A quick summary: The quality of the chapters in this edition is once again top notch. You'll learn beginning, intermediate and some advanced topics in the world of iOS development. Trying to go into deep Xcode and iOS development without having gone through at least another book dedicated just to objective-c is going to find you frustrated, like I was, many times trying to learn how to make an iOS app only picking up pieces of the underlying language! This book is 2 chapters of dedicated Objective-C and 26 Chapters of iOS/XCode/UIKit framework.Background about me: I have 10 years of C++, 6 years of .NET, 2 years of Python, and 2 months of Objective-C experience going into this book.I ordered the kindle version of this book, and it is great reading on the Mac. The book recommends that you read on a Mac due to the way their code looks on a Kindle/Kindle Fire. I own a Kindle Fire and agree. Besides, you should be doing *ALL* the apps that the book lays out for you, and there are many! So reading on a Mac and then coding their examples on a Mac is a good way to read this book.PROS:- Walks you through several iOS application examples.- Teaches you how to use Xcode by example.- Goes in depth into standards.- Provides resources to use in your applications- Explains *at the right time* why things are done a certain way.CONS:- Does have an assumption that you know at least C, but I'll go out on a limb and say you should have at least read a book on Objective-C as well.Recommended Readings:The book recommends that if you want an in-depth reading on Objective-C, this book is not for you. Thats understandable, this is the iOS Programming Book, not the Objective-C programming book. However, I think that having at least an Objective-C book under your belt going into this book is required. Like their Objective-C book I can't say enough how much I appreciate this iOS book from BNR:The book covers a very wide range of topics, providing people like me with knowledge and experience I really need. As they say, "we don't know what we don't know" which is very true for iOS: there is so very much to know. With this book I feel that I have the foundational tools and understanding I need to actually create an iOS app.I also appreciate the writing style and organization of information. The pattern is clear and provides sufficient depth. And as we progress through the book, they utilize our expanding knowledge - not having to provide quite so much detailed instruction on how to do things (like how to add a new NSObject subclass). I appreciated the fact that I could now do something "without training wheels" as I was learning new information.I also appreciate their online forums, where readers and authors have an interactive location to ask questions, learn from others, and investigate problems. After all, there is errata in anything, and the subject is complicated. The quantity of errata in the book is very low in my opinion, but it's reassuring to have a resource to check.I look forward to more books like this from Big Nerd Ranch.

I don't think it's possible to learn IOS programming with just one source of information. I've got piles of books, printed Apple documentation, subscriptions to training videos etc etc. Each of these things contributes in its own way. However, if I had to say which of these things have helped me the most in learning the groundwork, I would say1) This particular book (Big Nerd Ranch Guide) combined with:2) Simon Allardice's videos on Lynda.com (am I allowed to say that?) plus:3) Forging ahead and trying to write code using reference material (including other excellent books)These guys have a crystal ball - ok, they have experience - and seem to be able to predict what I'm going to need to know, before I realize it myself.Here's a story. I methodically (and even painfully) worked through about three quarters of the book and then got distracted trying to create a basic app. I got a bit stuck with my app. I searched through my reference stuff, read forums and inched ahead till my head was nearly done in. It was almost as a bit of a break that I started working through this book again, only to find solutions to some of my problems in the very next chapter! Crystal ball? (nah - experience, even better than a crystal ball!) Maybe I should have kept working through the book, but I think that we also need to go and "do" stuff in order for things to make sense.Another thing - the forum associated with this book is really useful.So, to summarise, I found this book to be an essential part of my learning and highly recommend it to others.

Well, it helped my son prep for the ASVAB after being out of school for 2 years and doing about zero academic work during that time. He did well, and qualified for the job he wanted.

So my fiancé is using this book to enlist in the Air Force and with him studying it he got a 85 on his practice test and is scheduled for the real one.

I think this study guide is awesome. As I was looking into it, the practice questions really helped me realize what I knew and didn’t know, what I needed more work on or less work on and the answer explanations really helped me understand it. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone studying for the asvab. It really helps!

This book provides a helpful baseline for what you need to know on the ASVAB. It covers a lot the material that will be on the test, and offers short and direct explanations of the material. Where this book falls apart is in the editing. Numerous typos throughout every section take away from the learning experience, but that isn’t even the worst part. On the practice tests, perhaps the most useful and important part of the book, the answer keys are not correct. They will have the correct solution to a problem, but the answer will be mislabelled. For example, it will say that C is the correct answer when the correct solution was under option A on the test. This is incredibly frustrating and requires the reader to check the answers one by one, often reworking the problem. There were also several answers that were on the whole incorrect. You can buy this book, but take practice tests elsewhere.

Info is helpful but this book has had 3 copyedit-style typos in the first subject (General Science) alone, including defining a type of rock and instead of "volcanic" it says 'unbold the "or"'. That's REALLY bad. I'm questioning the info because of the lack of attention paid.

Arithmetic Reasoning has always been a challenge for me. However, in the study guide I was able to do the practice questions and get an answer explanations on all the ones I had wrong. This gave me clarity and an understanding of what I was doing wrong and how to correct it. This is a great study guide and I highly recommend to my friends who are interested in joining the army forces

There is a lot of error in this book. example; on page 33 It said that group 8 is the noble gases but it's actually group 18. There is a lot error in the book like this.

It was a relief to me to be surprised by Francisco Cantu’s book.I lived in the Rio Grande Valley for 47 years and have seen firsthand the complexities involved in this issue. My brother was killed when a group of Mexican teenagers and their polleros were evading the police. The car they were in T-boned my brothers car at an intersection and cut him in two.A very good friend of mine, Hispanic as well, is a Border patrol agent. He qualified himself to work on the Rio Grande River in boats, on ATV out in the field and has also worked at the US Border Patrol sector headquarters. We spoke often, way before this book, about the things he has seen and done throughout his years as a CBP agent. How they are always being watched by lookouts from the south side of the river as they patrol the US side. He described the smell of decomposing bodies left behind in the brush land, or finding people under the full effect of heat stroke. He has told me about the taunts they receive as the polleros just escape back across the river. Cantu’s book reminded me a lot of my friend’s recollections. It also help me understand a little more of why he won’t speak too much about his feelings. I sense he is empathetic towards those he has stopped and believe he has genuine sympathy for them, but he also insists that what he is doing needs to be continued. He feels that even if stopping 1000 crossers only yields a few really dangerous people, he has improved life for His family on the US side.Living in Dallas for 3 1/2 years now, I have seen how much of it is being built by undocumented people. I know people, who like Jose stay under the radar by working and going home, day after day, and strive to live in peace. Some of them submitting themselves to unjust treatment because it is a better alternative than going back to their home country. I have been surprised at this treatment because it comes, many times, at the hands of Latinos who are fortunate enough to have legal status.This issue is very complex, and it angers me when people and politicians distill it down to platitudes. This has been done for far too long by people on every side of the argument. Usually, it has been done for personal gain and without any real knowledge of what it is like to live in an area affected by this, or any real knowledge of the people living through this.Thank you Mr. Cantu for writing this book, I wept through many sections and it has given me some resolve to help where I can. If anyone has strong feelings on either side of the immigration and citizenship problems of the US, I urge you to add this book to your references on the subject.

I picked up this book because the subject is topical and my local news suggested it contained some politically controversial material. The only thing that makes this book controversial is the presently vocal anti-immigrant hysteria of the American political Right. If the book had come out two years ago, no one would be declaring it controversial.An autobiographical story told in first person and covering a roughly 10 year period from the author's college graduation with a political science degree through and beyond his four year stint in the U.S. border patrol serving the south western United States. The author, being of Mexican heritage and raised in the South West, was drawn to the international border between the U.S. and Mexico, joining the border patrol to, as he put it, bring the theory he studied down to earth.There are a few flash backs to his earlier life, and some history of the border region, the 1860s war with Mexico that added the South West territories, Texas, and the southern half of California to the U.S. map, and also the impact of the Mexican Revolution of 1911. Much of the emotional conflict is revealed through dreams he had while serving on the border and later as his life never let him forget what he experienced.This is the story of a compassionate man in an in-compassionate job. He relates incidences of drug seizures, but notes that most of what he had to do was capture and return to Mexico people who wanted nothing more than to do some honest work and in many cases reunite with wives and in particular children born in the U.S. and so citizens. Many of these people die trying. Unlike a generation back, when crossing the border was relatively easy whether for work or criminal activity, it is now much more difficult and only the criminals have the resources to assure themselves of making the trip alive. The rest take their chances and thousands do not make it. The cruelty of criminal groups escorting migrants is on full display. People who cannot keep up in the many miles long trek across stony and water-less desert are simply left behind to die. The border patrol itself is complicit in some of these deaths destroying water and food, meant to sustain these people, where ever they find it.After four years the author cannot take more and quits the border patrol. The remainder of the book relates a friendship he develops with an undocumented Mexican immigrant who becomes trapped in the system, torn from his wife and children simply because he returns to Mexico to be with his dying mother and bury her. From there, he cannot get back and every attempt to do so traps him deeper and deeper in a system that cares nothing for compassionate people.This book is not political. Cantu avoids even mentioning much of politics, but merely reports what he experiences of an indifferent system and those trapped by it. He is most surely not opposed to interdicting drugs and deporting real criminals, but the vast majority of the migrant people involved are neither drug runners or criminals, but only criminalized by their desire to work and share a life with their spouses and children. If you are a compassionate person the book might bring you to tears. It is an honest report of the impact of an impersonal system on the lives of thousands of individuals who want nothing more than a life for themselves and their families. The political is mostly notable for its absence as the author tries, likely in vain for these times, to personalize these stories. There is nothing more controversial about it than that.

Francisco Cantu has a very interesting story to tell. Descended from Mexican immigrants, his family and the traditions associated with extended kinship are a central prism through which his story unfolds. A story that encompasses the two sides of the border, the people who cross the border searching for the american dream, and the people whose job it is to apply the law in order to secure that border. As a Border Patrol agent he is in the front line of this saga, witnessing firsthand the desperation and determination of the migrants who risk everything for a better way of life. The exploitation that they suffer at the hands of the smugglers who view them as just an income stream, and the inhumanity of the judicial system that only recognizes them as illegal aliens, committing a federal offense.However, once they cross, the migrants are the epitome of the hard working immigrants making good in their adopted country, having to suffer the perennial stigma of being undocumented, with all the trials and tribulations that come with that condition.Cantu does not offer any policy solutions, rather he just tells the stories of the people that are players in this drama. This is the strength of the book.

Fascinating read. The first chapter, I hated him because the situation at the border was so sad, but then I grew to like him. I was so engrossed that I read it fast. He mixes the facts and his life as a border patrol agent with beautiful descriptions of the states he worked in, the people he worked with and the life he lived. He's a great author and I would read more. I'm online now looking for more books on the border, as my interest is piqued!

Reading this book with a glass of wine is like hanging out with your best friend and having all her love and acceptance wrapped around you and instilled into you that you matter and that you can make a difference. I ran a sustainable business for 5 years and know a lot about giving a shit, yet I was shocked to find simple changes that I could make that never occurred to me. I feel inspired, encouraged and know I am a better person for reading and underlining the shit out of this book.

I haven't been able to put this book down. I really love her writing style and the flow of the book. It's really inspiring me to want to do more and to live like I care (because I do). Such an approachable guide to living a less wasteful less. Love it.

The 6th edition is still an excellent valuation textbook. I've read every edition since the third, and I think Koller et al. doed a good job describing and explaining the valuation process from a fundamentally sound perspective. Many valuation textbooks out there are filled with practitioner rules of thumbs or techniques that are imprecise (maybe even flawed) from an economic standpoint. As such, I think this should be one of the first books anyone interested in valuation should read. That way, you stand a chance of not forming bad habits. In addition, although the main valuation techniques are very similar to what was presented in earlier editions of the book, the 6th edition has updated discussions and data through 2013/2014. I find these discussions insightful and help others realize that valuation is not a mechanical exercise and that the economics behind the calculations is the key driver of the process.

The book is well written but is geared for executives with mid level accounting and finance. I am very much a fan of the book itself, but not the Kindle format. I would highly recommend people buy the print copy and not the kindle version due to the quality of the figures. I read the book on the kindle paperwhite and my laptop and I had trouble seeing the more detailed figures. I am not sure if this complaint is for the publisher or Amazon Kindle, but it is important to be able to enlarge the smaller, more detailed figures (data tables, etc.) to follow the text.

Was hoping for something a little more suited toward,buying a small business. This seems well suited for stock investors of public companies, and while their ideas certainly have value for evaluating larger private companies, it's less so for someone looking to buy a small business from a private seller. Not a bad book for finance practitioners however.

Great supplemental resource for the textbook. The book provides you with a brief summary, practice problems, and solutions for each chapter, which I found very helpful in order to understand valuation at a deeper level. The content is also helpful in preparing for exams.

nice book to get ideas about stock valuation

It's super dense and not very well articulated. For a book by McKinsey partners I'd have expected a lot more emphasis in clear points and less on presenting data.

I used this book for my Valuation course in my MS Finance degree program. This book covers many proven valuation methods and is supported by very comprehensive and current data. We used this book in parallel to a semester long group project in valuating a mining company. This book was a useful tool to use while working on our project. It is easy to understand outside of the classroom and provides clear instruction and well written examples. This book is a must-have for your professional or academic valuation and finance tool-kit.

Very technical and a dry read. Without a professor explaining the concepts I would be lost.

This book is rather large and the text covers pages from top to bottom & side to side, and by having to hold it close to read, it leads to a more intimate journal-reading experience. After all, Amundsen is a terrific writer, spontaneous and never writing for effect, who seems inherently positive and as a result this is a very relaxing and entertaining read. Having read books by other authors about the journeys of both Scott and Amundsen to the South Pole, I found it very refreshing to read the author's original log-based biography of his amazing experiences. This would be a great book to take on vacation, because it puts you in an entirely different place & time. My take is also that this story involves a lot of "emotional intelligence" in the way that the entire crew worked together towards the main goal. One reads again and again about how members of the shore party had brought along secondary skills which over time became more apparent and useful to the entire group's well-being. Amundsen's attention to detail in all things including the quality of the food they brought and the technological improvements to skis and bindings are awesome. One more example are the walking boots, which underwent four reconstructions from the originals, during the time before the pole attempt. R. F. Scott's pole team - unfortunately for them - had no such footwear equivalents, and paid a heavy price as a result.

Amazing account of Amundsen's (being the first) reaching The South Pole in 1911. Much is taken from the diaries of the men involved who were very good at detailing their day to day challenges. Men of this caliber are a rarity today.
