This author is an alcoholic and I am a bookaholic. When I start reading a book, I compulsively continue it, even if it's God-awful and I hate it. This unfortunate quirk has caused me many a boring hour, but in this case I owe it a debt of gratitude.Which is a way of saying that the giddy, girly style of writing in the first chapter almost drove me insane. Nothing but my reluctance to abandon a book kept me going. But then a miracle happened and the writing (while informal and still WAY too full of whimsy) settled down. By the second chapter, I was glued to Fisher's weird family diagram (parents, sibling, spouses, step-parents, half-siblings, step-siblings, actresses, actors, singers, agents, artists, beauty queens, and a respected Chinese-American author) and laughing hysterically. Welcome to Hollywood.This is not a book you read to find out "what happened." Unless you've been living in a cave, you know all about Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher and Carrie Fisher and Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton and Cary Grant and Paul Simon. Their lives may not have been any more troubled or eventful than many private citizens, but they were lived in full view of the public. Old style Hollywood with its carefully groomed stars and jealously guarded publicity may be a thing of the past, but the celebrity machine is still cranking away even more furiously than when Eddie Fisher caused an international scandal by dumping his wholesome wife and marrying Liz Taylor (who soon dumped HIM and married Richard Burton.) Who cares? A lot of people, judging from the ink that was wasted on reporting every detail.Fisher herself grew up the daughter of two celebrities and became one herself at the tender age of 19 when she played Princess Leia in the Star Wars series. She married a famous singer and then an agent, had a daughter, wrote books, and performed one-woman shows. She also abused drugs and alcohol, attended AA meetings, was in and out of mental hospitals, was diagnosed as bi-polar, and underwent electroshock therapy. You could say she's lived a "full life."I'm disinterested in the entertainment industry and in celebrities in general, and yet Fisher is an appealing woman. She comes across as brutally honest, especially about her own problems and mistakes. You get the impression of someone who has been through so much craziness that she has both developed an inner toughness and been stripped of the need to hide her defects and weaknesses.I read this book or a version of it years ago and remembered being impressed. I was happy to find the Kindle version and enjoyed re-reading it. I think it's a valuable story. No, most of us didn't grow up in Beverly Hills, but most of our lives have been touched by addiction and mental illness. In the end, this isn't a story of a celebrity. It's a story of a woman and how she's dealt with her problems.

I bought this book the day after Carrie's death, about an hour after I learned of her mother's death. I was too sad to go to bed so I bought this book instead. And read it straight through.I'm glad I did."Postcards from the Edge" was my only prior impression of the relationship these two women had. This memoir paints a very different picture. I am sorry the world has lost these two brilliant and beautiful souls, but I am glad for them both that they still have each other.

Since being diagnosed as bipolar a couple of years ago, I've been on a journey to discover people who have been successful and thrived in spite of bipolar disorder, because so very much you hear about it is so horribly depressing. In my quest to find 'normal' (aka functional) people who have Bipolar, I stumbled across Carrie Fisher's name, and I'm glad I did! This book, written in true bipolar style of jumping from one subject to the next and going off on random tangents, is a hilarious and positive book that reads like a one hour comedy special. It's a little bit of her background and history, but mostly humorous anecdotes from her life, with the message intertwined throughout that even though she's been through some hard times, she is doing well and loving her life. I think anyone who enjoys random humorous stories would appreciate this book, but I would especially recommend it to anyone struggling with a diagnosis of bipolar: it gives you hope that you're not doomed and you CAN live a happy, fun, and fulfilling life in spite of the disease. Kudos to Carrie Fisher for being so open and candid about her life and struggles so others don't have to feel alone.

You don't so much get to sit down with your hero of stage and screen, but rather get to know a human being in a world full of larger than Life characters. She's the one sane person in an insane world and the product of that. This book is a journey into how and why she became the hero known as Carrie Fisher. And I say she is a hero because having come from such a surreal life it is hard not to fall in love with her and admire the strength and Gaul this woman has in the face of a difficult reality.By the end of the night her pint is still full, yours is empty, and somehow you feel like you not only got to know her but have been hugged by her just moments before she throws glitter at you as an expression of affection.This is what wishful drinking is. A very sober but enriching tale into the life of a person born into American royalty, thrust into a surreal life way too young, and her battle to keep herself together with pride and dignity through it all.

Not a life-changing memoir but a life-affirming one, with a sharp, honest recounting of actress/author Carrie Fisher's life. In turns funny and bawdy, she never asks for pity, but goes at it like a true recovered addict: all her pain digested into humor, but never denied. Margaret Daley is such a great storyteller. There are always at least two plots developed . . . the mystery, suspense plot and the spiritual one. She throws enough red herrings into her mysteries to keep you wondering who the villain is to the very end, and her spiritual message is never preachy, but powerful. In this story, her characters learn that God's forgiveness and His mercies are new every morning. I loved the setting. What a fun story!

This was a very sweet romance with both the hero and heroine having issues from their pasts that provide obstacles to their budding interests in each other. Both saw one they loved die right before their eyes and carry loads of guilt and fear of relationships; however the hero finds his instinct to protect too strong and the heroine finds she must earn his trust while learning to give hers. Add a deadly stalker and the suspense is edgy. I loved the climax. It was very believable.

Forsaken Canyon was an adventure. Loved that the heroine went out of her comfort zone to find her brother. I also enjoyed that the hero was so far lost you wanted him to pull himself together and get his life straight through the whole book. If you enjoy adventure, you'll enjoy Forsaken Canyon.

A great mystery and lots of action and of course romance added with the suspense. A good book for Christian's.

No one knows American pop culture like Jane & Michael Stern. They write from a sociological standpoint, but it's so interesting, witty and TRUE! All of their books are funny, entertaining, and enlightening. My personal favorite is "60's People", which is impossible to find. But this is a good second place (along with The Encyclopedia Of Bad Taste). If you're interested in pop culture, I highly recommend this book.

If you want lots of information on a topic, this is the book for you. Very detailed-orientated. It has about 210 chapters on various pop culture topics. Don't look for color pictures in this book, you won't find any, just b & w. Much more text than pictures.

I own one and a half copies of this book, mostly because I read the first one until it finally fell apart and I felt it was very well worth replacing. So yes, buy it. This book is well worth buying and reading if you have been alive at any point during the the 20th century. It's fun, comprehensive and makes for a highly entertaining read.

This is an excellent reference work that profiles the most celebrated (and in some cases, reviled) touchstones of 20th Century American life. I highly recommend finding a copy.

Alan Shivers Foust was my graduate advisor at Lehigh. He was also, back in the late 1950s, my Chemical Engineering instructor in Unit Operations. He and his associates (Len Wenzel, Curt Clump, and Bryce Anderson) wrote this book. We sophomore students were paid a penny for each typo or mistake which we found in one of the early drafts:)Dr. Foust, et. al first classified the three unit operations by the underlying process----heat transfer, mass transfer, momentum transfer. I believe that was a revolutionary point of view at the time. But it made it easy for me to build a macro view of Chemical Engineering which has lasted for a lifetime! Many have expanded upon this view over the last 50-odd years, but this is the original.The second aspect which made this book of great and lasting value is that it is packed with worked examples. The third aspect is that these examples provide illustration about conversion of units from a variety of systems into the English system.I still have my well-worn original copy, but it is too fragile to use so that's why I bought a low-priced copy from Amazon.

Its a good book, well maintained.

Dr. Susan J. Harkema PhD, Associate Professor holds the Owsley B. Frazier Rehabilitation Chair in Neurological Surgery and is the Rehabilitation Research Director of the Kentucky Spinal Cord Injury Research Center at the University of Louisville. She is the Director of Research at Frazier Rehab Institute and is Director of the NeuroRecovery Network that provides standardized activity-based therapies for individuals with spinal cord injury at seven national rehabilitation centers in the United States. Her research focuses on neural plasticity of spinal networks and recovery of function after spinal cord injury.Dr. Behrman is an Associate Professor in the Dept of Physical Therapy, College of Public Health and Health Professions at the University of Florida and a Research Health Scientist at the VA Brain Rehabilitation Research Center, Malcom Randall VA Medical Center. She also is a co-Director of the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation NeuroRecovery Network translating evidence for activity-based therapies into clinical practice. Her research targets developing "best practice" for walking recovery after neurologic injury using principles of activity-dependent plasticity and an understanding of the neurobiology of walking. Dr. Barbeau was part of the first group that developed the locomotor training in SCI and stroke subjects in the early 80s. He has had a significant contribution to the development of functional electrical stimulation and the drugs on the locomotor pattern in the SCI subjects.

Oscar Wilde, for all his wit and wisdom was a man unable to survive his abbreviated lifetime. A married Gay man representing himself publicly as straight (not a word so commonly used to represent sexuality in the 19th Century) was eventually drawn into the courts of Great Britain surprising Wilde beyond his comprehension. His self-interests were not legally appreciated in the U.K. at that time resulting in his imprisonment. Wilde was witty, brave, and held much contempt for those who could not possibly understand the lifestyles of those who were so easily discriminated against and so swiftly thrust into jail. The Oscar Wilde depicted through his wit and wisdom is how I am certain he wanted to be remembered. Writing and dying under an assumed name, Sebastian Melmoth was nothing of the outcome he would have expected. I believe, however, and to his satisfaction, he presents himself to us as we know him: a great and clever author and poet.

Oscar Wilde was a remarkable person beyond his means of expressing life as he discovered it. His acerbic nature was the disguise he used in order to survive; imprisoned for simply being himself, Wilde nonetheless fought for his rights to speak, even to breathe until even that was taken from him. I think Wilde was the Britain's greatest genius of the 19th century - poems, tales, stories, a novel, plays, essays. He did it all and did it all perfectly. He was also a wit. Better than Shaw. One note: He made the English happy. So they put him in jail for 2 years which ruined his health which soon killed him. But he died in France, not England.

Great little book. I am a big fan of small, memorable quotes and insights and this book gave me what I wanted.
