About the Author

George Psychoundakis (1920–2006) was born and raised in the remote Cretan village of Asi Gonia, where he received a rudimentary education. When the German army invaded in 1941, he left his work as a shepherd and joined the Resistance. He would eventually run messages for the British Special Operations Executive, and was noted for his speed and intimacy with the landscape. After the war he was mistakenly imprisoned as a deserter and began writing what would become The Cretan Runner (published in English in 1955 and in Greek in 1986) while in prison. In addition to his memoir, Psychoundakis wrote The Eagle’s Nest, a study of the customs of Cretan mountain dwellers, and translated works by Hesiod and Homer into the Cretan language. In 1945 Psychoundakis received the Medal of the Order of the British Empire for Meritorious Service, and in 1981 he was recognized by the Academy of Athens for his translations. He lived on Crete, with his wife and three children, until the end of his life.Patrick Leigh Fermor (1915–2011) chronicled his youthful walk across Europe to Constantinople in a trilogy comprising A Time of Gifts, Between the Woods and the Water, and The Broken Road. After serving on Crete during World War II, Leigh Fermor settled in Greece and his books Mani and Roumeli attest to his deep love for the country. In 2004 he was knighted for his services to literature and to British–Greek relations.

Well done! Wish there could have been a few maps of Crete showing the various cities quoted. Great piece of history showing the bravery and resourcefulness of the Cretans and Allied forces to disrupt German operations.

This book is founded on an image out of the Middle Ages -- when two men, wrapped from head to toe in gleaming steel, carrying wicked lances, mounted on massive horses, charged full speed at each other to settle disputes about truth and justice in the confrontational medieval way. That, in essence, is the basis of `Justice is Conflict.' It's been the basis of Anglo-Saxon justice for at least a millennia, and for unknown hundreds of years before that. It's far from the idea that "might is right," instead it embodies that God is on the side of the just. Movies always depict it in that manner. From the meekest knight to the American fictional cowboy with a six-gun on his hip, justice always triumphs. It's a confrontational system of justice based on combat, as explained by Thomas Jefferson when he said he was not afraid to tolerate error "so long as reason is left free to combat it." The key word is "combat." Today, when lawyers challenge each other in court battles, they are staging a ritual re-enactment of those old jousts. In contrast, the Navajo spirit of K'e emphasizes a consensus system of justice. The goal is not that God can be counted on to favor the just; instead, it is a search to find truth and thus assess blame properly. There's usually no clear "Guilty" and "Innocent" verdict; instead, blame is assessed on a proportional basis. In other words, even if you are guilty, perhaps you are only 90 percent guilty. Perhaps the other person did contribute somewhat to the problem. Perhaps the solution requires a compromise to achieve justice. Harmony, rather than win-loss absolutism, is prized. Hampshire is undoubtedly correct in asserting that our society is based on the ethics of confrontation; he asserts this eternal "conflict" produced our modern world. He's very persuasive; and, as a friend used to say, "Interesting . . . if true." But, what was the situation a thousand years ago when Europe was the weakest and most backward region in the world. The question then, is whether transforming the direct confrontation system of justice into a careful and precise ritualized procedure made all the difference, or were other factors involved in European society becoming dominant. Twenty-five hundred years ago, Plato argued for the Navajo approach -- reason should be used to achieve agreement and harmony among warring ideas. That was at a time when society worshipped a pantheon of gods; two thousand years ago, the concept of a single God began to take hold. The same idea took hold in matters of justice; instead of a panopoly of truths, people began to seek one truth -- a person was either guilty or innocent, with no Mr. Inbetween. Justicfe became an all-or-nothing decision. Forget about the middle of the road, the only thing you find there are yellow stripes and dead armadillos. As Thomas Paine said in 1792 in `The Rights of Man,' "moderation in principle is always a vice." Hampshire, like Singer, goes to the heart of what makes our society tick -- perhaps. Okay, this was freakin hilarious! I read it out loud to my mom and we were cracking up at these realistic discussions of the "joys" of raising children. This is NOT a book for people looking for sweet stories of perfect children. And there are a couple of swear words in the book (in each paragraph? :-) ), so if you have a delicate ear, this book may not be for you! But for the rest of us, it's wonderful to know that there are other mommies out there who have suffered through some of these wonderful experiences! Thank-you, Baby Sideburns, for this fun read!

Ok, I would like to first say that I think Karen Alpert (aka Baby Sideburns) is hilarious. As a mom of a 2 year old, I am glad that someone else also is going through the same things that I am. It really makes me feel better. With that being said, I was really disappointed in this book. I follow Baby Sideburns on Facebook, and when she posts stories, I usually always go and read them on her blog. There are very few of her posts that I haven't read.This book would be great for someone who didn't follow her or read her blog because most all of the stories in this book are the same ones that she's written on her blog. Because of that, I was reading things that I had already read. I'm really disappointed. I thought that these would be all new things that she was writing about, but it wasn't.This would make a fantastic gift for a new parent, or just one who doesn't actively read her blog.

My dad has always said the best jokes/humor is funny because there's an element of truth to it! Well this book is hilarious! On multiple occasions I shared excerpts of this book with fellow parents I know because I knew that particular excerpt applied to their life and they would find it funny! On multiple occasions this book spoke to me & made me laugh out loud, including times I had to hold it in because my daughter was sleeping next to me and good grief I didn't want to wake her! So, in short, if you are or were a parent of a toddler or young child this book is for you, especially for moms because there are excerpts about childbirth and husbands that moms can relate to! However, all parents will enjoy this book because they can relate to things like the annoyance that is Caillou or the joys of owning a minivan, just to name a couple. It's a fast read and I highly recommend it!

As a parent of 3 kids, I heart Karen Alpert (AKA Baby Sideburns) and her willingness to tell it like it is. My kids are teenagers now but I very clearly remember situations very similar to those Karen describes. Since I'm on the other side, I can look back through rose-colored glasses, however I know I would have appreciated Karen's "tell it like it is" style even more when I was going through it all myself. I sincerely hope she keeps writing when her kids are teens- I can only imagine what they will be up to!

Absolutely hilarious! I found myself nodding along and annoyingly reading sections to my husband, as I snorted through laughter! I absolutely love my kids, so much that it hurts sometimes. But I felt like a horrible mother feeling like I wanted to run away sometimes. Karen speaks to me, she says all of the things I'm screaming in my head, and makes me feel like I'm not the only one! A friend actually saw this book on sale and sent the link in a group text to a bunch of us with little ones. I immediately bought it and I'm so glad I did! A little comic relief for this mom, that was completely needed!

there are several places that you should not attempt to read this book.1. the sidelines of your kids soccer practice, because as you are laughing so hard you are crying, other parents are looking at you quizzically since little Johnny just got kicked and is crying.2. the waiting room outside your kids CCD class... there are a lot of pictures that make us baby-sideburns fans crack up repeatedly, while some shall-we-say less fun people will purse their lips disapprovingly.3. The back row of jury duty. The court officer will confiscate your book, although you will definitely see him smirking after lunch because he totally read it too and thought it was HILARIOUS.For real, Karen Alpert hits the nail on the head with this book the same as she does with every blog. She is funny, clever, witty, REAL, and best of all just GETS how the rest of us moms feel most of the time. I am totally going to buy 20 copies and give them out as Christmas gifts. I am still deciding about using the vagina cupcakes for Christmas baking.... :-)

I laughed so hard I snorted in parts of this book. She really does say the things most, if not all mothers, think at one time or another but are too scared? prime and proper? politically correct? to admit..The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because of the annoying overuse of the "f" word. It would have been just as funny without it, and all it did for me was distract from the flow of reading. Come on Karen, that kind of language isn't necessary to be funny.

Let's be honest here...this author breaks it down for real moms in a way that makes you feel much less crazy. You know that you're one of a community of other moms who love their kids like crazy, but are also losing their absolute S#%! on any given day. I cannot adequately convey my love for this book!
