I'll have to update this, because I have just started the book ( just under 100 pgs. ) but it is very well written and is exactly what I was looking for. A believer and follower of the Buddhist teachings, I have always been interested in what draws others, and in this case women, to Buddha and the teachings. This book not only interviews women from the East, but from the West as well. Woven throughout is historical background information, different views of different branches of Buddhism and the writer's thoughts and feelings. I would definitely recommend this book
An absolutely gorgeous, lovely, deeply moving book. I didn't want it to end...I've shared it w friends....incredible.
I absolutely loved this book. Toomey goes to great lengths to discover the many ways in which Buddhist nuns are living and working today, and provides tender and respectful personal information about some of the nuns that she interviews. It is wonderful to see the rich and joyful lives that so many women have chosen - it is quite different from the austere and harsh conditions we may imagine. Though their physical comforts may be few, the deep inner peace that many have found comes through loud and clear.
A brilliant, insightful look at the experiences of women in Buddhism across traditions and across the world. I came away with the distinct understanding that our attachment to externals and "the way things have always been" is quite often nothing more than self deception and a thinly veiled justification for our own bigotry. Highly recommended!
Inspiring but harrowing excursion into the lives of Buddhist nuns. Kudos to the author for finding this untold story of women's lives. I'm learning much more about Buddhist practice and sects than I have from other books. For those interested in monastic life, a wonderful addition to the literature.
The book can be a little bit repetitive, but I learned a great deal about the different stains of Buddhism. It is sad that Buddhism perpetuates the same misogyny as almost every other religion despite Buddha's original teachings.
I happened on this book and absolutely loved it. The book serves as a history of the many sects of Buddhism through the stories of women in the various communities. She travels the globe to visit monasteries of various ideologies and interviews women who have chosen to enter a new life style. The women have a wide variety of backgrounds and each story was not only interesting but also educational. I was sorry to see this one end.
This was interesting and easy to read. It took any romantic - fantasy out of being a nun. As someone who has a stack of unread books, it speaks well of this book that I actually read it.
