About the Author
Monsignor Ronald Knox (1888-1957) was born in Leicestershire, England, to a leading Anglican family and was educated at Eton and Balliol. He was ordained an Anglican priest in 1912 and was made chaplain of Trinity College, Oxford. In 1917 Knox converted to Catholicism, a decision heavily influenced by his close friendship with G. K. Chesterton. He was ordained a Roman Catholic priest in 1918 and in 1936 was commissioned by the English Catholic hierarchy to translate the Latin Vulgate version of the Bible into contemporary English. Knox died on August 24, 1957, and was buried in Westminster Cathedral.

Ronald Knox was genius personified. He works are easily equal those of Bishop Fulton Sheen.Three words describe this work by Monsignor Knox. Those words are, wisdom, clarity and beauty. It is difficult to explain the great depth of the wisdom his explanation of the faith as it is expressed in the Creed, the clarity with which is is expressed, and the beauty with which it is expressed. I can only offer a brief passage as an example.Here, Knox is explaining that God is the maker of heaven and earth and offers us a vision of the Holy Trinity: "The Mind of God produced a Thought; a thought equal to and worthy of itself. ... the Divine Word, the second Person of the Blessed Trinity and in the same instant ... Love sprang into existence, a Love which flowed back and forth in perfect measure, between those two. And so a third Person enriches the live of the Godhead, that Love which we call the Holy Spirit".Truly, this book is worth every penny it may cost and will return value a hundred fold to the reader.
I haven't written a review before, but this book brought me to it. I'm reading this out loud to my children (4th and 1st grade). The fourth grader doesn't want me to stop at one chapter a night. The first graders aren't as enthusiastic about it but are learning things in spite of themselves. My husband and I are bowled over by the insights. Knox writes so clearly and simply, with lots of humor. Very C.S. Lewis. I'm excited to find his Mass in Slow Motion someday.
The essays in the book were intended for school girls, but can be powerful for anyone. The chapters are short but use clear explanations that provide much material for further meditations. Knox, who inspired both C.S. Lewis and Tolkin can take difficult concepts and make them live. I plan to read his other books.
Msgr. Knox has a wonderful explanation of every aspect of the Faith. Going through the Credo one phrase at a time, he explains in easy-to-understand language all we need to know.
This was a nice book to read during Lent. Each lecture is just the right length for a thoughtful reflection. Highly recommended.
