Amazon Exclusive: Executive Editor Rena M. Klein, FAIA on "Five New Insights on Practice" available in the 15th edition of The Architect’s Handbook of Professional Practice While each edition of the Handbook delivers time-tested knowledge on best professional practices, the 15th edition also offers insights into current challenges of practice in the 21st Century. New material has been included to help owners of small and mid-sized firms succeed and expand the boundaries of what is possible in their practices. Here are five of the most important new insights. 1. Multi-office firms are a viable option for mid-size firm expansion. The why, the how, and what to watch out for when establishing a branch office is explained by Deborah DeBernard, AIA in her article, “Developing and Managing Multi-office Firms.” The experience of a firm who did just that is described in an accompanying essay by Catherine Calvert, AIA and Wolf Sarr, AIA, “Developing and Managing a Mid-sized Multi-office Firm.” 2. Architect-led design build is possible. How can small firms participate in and benefit from this growing trend in project delivery? In his essay, “Architect-led Design Build and Architect as Construction Manager for Small Firms and Small Projects,” James Walbridge, AIA provides practical information on how to get started. 3. Architects are engaged with the non-profit sector in a variety of ways. Read David Gamble’s article, ”Architects in the Non-Profit Sector,” to gain insight into how architects are engaging in pro-bono work. “Community Design Centers In Context,” by Dan Pitera, FAIA, and “Independent Community Design Centers” by Ceara O’Leary describe how architects are involved in the work of community based design practices. An essay by Susan Chin, FAIA, the Chief Architect of Wildlife Conservation Society discusses the experience of being employed by a large non-profit. 4. Building Information Modeling can be used for small projects and by small firms. Learn how this is done from François Lévy, AIA in his article, “Small Firms, Small Projects, and Building Information Modeling.” Straightforward explanations of the technology and its usage in a small firm context are provided, sharing experience gained directly from practice. 5. Research is being integrated into practice to the benefit of users, clients, and the firm. An entire chapter is devoted to the emerging relationship between research and practice, as the profession advances through knowledge creation and evidence-based design. Travis Hicks, AIA, Mardelle McCuskey Shepley, FAIA, David Wang, PhD, among others contribute comprehensive explanations of research methods and their applications to design practice. Susan Jones, FAIA in her essay, “Research and Small Firm Practice,” describes how research can benefit every design practice.

Overall this is an excellent book that every architect/designer should own, especially those studying for their ARE or working towards understanding how to operate the business side of practice. This book might be better described as 'an MBA in Architecture' reference book, no really, I mean that. Get your office to order this and have it on your shelf, it should really be a standard since we don't do a good job of discussing the business of architecture within school and among our peers.Content (5/5) - This is a must have for ARE studying and general professional use. You'll find yourself referencing this for a variety of things in everyday architectural practice and I believe it's a must have.Organization (4/5) - The organization of the book is solid and the content follows the index well.**See Update Below** Contract Docs (5/5) - They give you a proprietary code to download PDFs of the AIA Contract documents to have for reference. This is very simple and arguably one of the most important parts of the book. Buying used makes the code unlikely to work so beware when shopping used to save $$, might not be worth it if the contract docs aren't included.Layout/Ease of use (2/5) - Page layout is abysmal and difficult to use for long periods of time. The gutter is too narrow and makes reading close to the bind exceptionally difficult, especially on the pages in the middle of the book. The main text could be more narrow to make room for the gutter, Wiley, please change this on the next issue. To make this book more practical for daily professional use and read less like a text book, I would like to see a spiral bound version, otherwise the next one I get will be a PDF version.**UPDATE** - Disregard comment about Contract Documents, all of the AIA contracts are available from AIAContracts.org website for free. Pay close attention to which version of the contract when you download, otherwise, feel free to purchase this book used as the 'online content' can be obtained for free.

Comprehensive, and great on the shelf. For people taking the ARE, this is worth the investment, and you will want to keep it as a reference for years to come. I have a couple decades of experience, and I recently took it off the shelf to read the portions on project delivery. The IPD section is good, as well as the design-build essays. In fact, one of the nice features are these little essays written by practitioners. It's almost like being able to call up a knowledgeable architect and chat on the phone for a couple minutes.AIA should really turn this book into a wiki. The fact that AIA is so far behind on the technology curve is a shame.

This is not about the content of this book but the way the deal between the publisher and amazon has been made. There is additional online content for this and it ebook says to contact the publisher for a code....well don't wast your time because after waiting for 20 mins they told me that because its purchased through amazon there is nothing they can to to give me a code. So while amazon customer support is helpful and yet unresolved....if you do not want to end up in this situation buy the printed version or directly from Wiley as they generate the code.

If you plan to practice architecture and or pass the ARE...you need to purchase this book. Don't expect cool pictures and all that stuff...this book is about the business of architecture. The downloads for the actual AIA documents worked perfectly!!!! I would recommend this book even though it is substantially pricey. Thanks.//Chuck

A must have for any architect, designer, or intern studying for the ARE. This is one of the main recommended study guides for the ARE and it is full of information. The price is a little steep, but it's a resource that can be used regularly, even when you've passed the ARE.

This book is somewhat useful but it is obscenely overpriced. I am not going to go into detail, but I really feel it is doing the profession a disservice to have such "essential" materials for emerging professionals at such a high price point. I couldn't find a local office or library that had this book. Is it useful? Sure. Is it worth the $220 I paid for it? NEVER.

I had ordered a new book and paid the hefty sum for the new hardback and paid extra for the pdf e-book. The seemingly new book came and the “hardback” cover and several pages inside was torn. There was no plastic cover to unwrap like you would a “new” book. The url link PPI sent for the E-book version did not work every time I tried to download it and so I emailed customer service. I have been emailing them very day and still no response....

I purchased the Architect's Handbook of Professional Practice to help study for the ARE's. I wish I had purchased this sooner as the information covered is clear, concise and very reflective of the information candidates are expected to know for the exams. It is a great resource for any architect considering starting their own practice or just wanting to a broader understanding of the industry.
