The topic is very good, but I did not FEEL the characters, especially considering how long the author was with them - getting to know them one on one. I would have loved a more personal account, and also was expecting the suspense and danger to drive the text onward. It was like watching it, learning factual information, but not being engaged in the story - not getting to know each person involved - making each person unique/individual. The only truly exciting presentation came at the end when describing the time around nine eleven. More writing like that would have moved the story along. I will say that about 1/3 of our book club did like it very much, 1/3 felt a bit let down by the pace (some did not finish it), and the other 1/3 thought it was ok.
The story of this remarkable young woman and her sisters and eventually the other women she employs is unquestionably inspiring. It deserves a better writer. The author's flat, uninspired writing totally sucks the life out of what should have been an absorbing narrative. I really wanted to like this book, but the characters are undeveloped and the lack of style, despite what should have been totally absorbing substance, made it impossible. If I was grading this in a freshman comp class, I'd probably give it a C at best. Didn't she ever learn the first rule of good writing, to "show, don't tell"? I really don't know how it got published.
Disappointing! I kept trying to like it. Told from perspective of a journalist. Perhaps it would have been better if it was a first person narrative. Great gaps in storyline and logic. I found it difficult to believe someone could learn to sew in a few hours of an afternoon. Writing style was very simplistic. If you can get it free, you might give it a chance otherwise don't waste money on this.
As I read books, I often conjure questions that I mull over a long period of time. This book, The Dressmaker of Khair Khana: Five Sisters, One Remarkable Family, and the Woman Who Risked Everything to Keep Them Safe by Gayle Tzemach Lemmon brought several to mind.Afghanistan has been under Soviet control and now the Taliban has rolled in--women are being persecuted. No more simple scarves, time to don the chandri...shopping requires that a male family member accompany each woman and these restrictions are just the beginning. Why do men or groups of men feel that they have the right to impose restrictions on women? Some theories place religion to blame...some blame the women themselves. I ponder if granting women rights is an evolutionary process much like the disappearance of wisdom teeth or the creation of multi-tasking abilities. Then I read a book such as this and see how a simple girl can mobilize her family and other women to earn money and provide services and goods for other women. Her example of how good deeds and spirit create a positive ripple effect.Yes this book is of the same vein as "Three Cups of Tea", "Reading Lolita in Tehran", "The Kabul Beauty School" and "The Bookseller of Kabul." I loved all those books and I love this one. This is an area of the world that is fascinating and constantly under change. When you read about the Taliban and their suppression of the female spirit, it is easy to look at it through western eyes. However even here in the United States, there are women who live under the yolk of their husband. Some of these women can be found in polygamist cults. Many women are suppressed without realizing it--they are given limited budgets and funds, they can't have contact with their friends, they are scared to stand up and offer honest input to their husband because of the wrath it might generate. We have prostitutes that pay heavily to their pimps, women who are suppressed by their bosses or work environment. My admiration for the heroine, Kamela Sediqi, is boundless as is my admiration for all women who strive to make this world a better place for their daughters (and sons). This book is a gentle read. Sometimes I found the dialogue a bit stilted and contrived and the writing style youthful. However this author has budding talent to be a real force for this world of literature and thank you to her for allowing us to experience the story of Kamela Sediqi. She is a blossom that bloomed in a desert.
Don't tell me women are the weaker sex!! The Taliban rules Afghanistan and rather than be arrested and to what ever fate awaits them (tortured and /or killed) the men of the family flee under cover of darkness to nearby Pakistan hoping to find work there. The women of the family, five sisters, are alone and soon run out of funds for food, etc. This enterprising young lady under stress, learns to make dresses she can sell. Surprised by her success, she teaches her sisters to sew and they survive. Upon hearing what they are doing, neighbors ask them to teach their daughters so they can sell enough to purchase what food is available, enabling the remaining families to survive. They are very careful to observe prayer times when anyone on the streets would be arrested, and also to obey the laws that a woman must always be escorted by a male, the youngest brother is pressed into helping. What they endure is almost unbelievable, but I salute these brave young ladies...
. Kamila's story is enlightening and encouraging. Forced to save her own family during Afghanistan's siege by the Taliban, she also found a way for other young girls to help their families. She sets up an underground dressmaking business, hiring any local girls she knows she can trust. These girls are determined and hard-working, willing to risk their very lives and sacrifice to help parents who have no work opportunities or are involved in the war. Kamila proves to be a smart and savvy businesswoman and an educator. Education is as important as dressmaking to her so the girls will have a future once they are no longer under Taliban rule, so she adds classes to the daily routine. A must-read for those interested in women's rights as well as women's strong work ethic while living in oppressed countries.
We have all heard about Al Queda and the Taliban and Afghanistan for so many years. To be honest, I never really understood the groups. It was great to just follow one family and then have the climate and traditions of Afghan people and how the Taliban and then Al Queda and then America effected their country. I feel like I have a much better understanding while enjoying a great read. Not usually a fan of non-fiction but was very happy that I read this.
